after Chopin in 2010 and brahms in 2011, the Queen elisabeth Music chapel and Flagey, in co-production with the liège royal philharmonic orchestra and the brussels philharmonic, present jointly again an autumn “a la française” Festival, from 13 to 17 november 2012 at Flagey.

programmed by the Music Chapel, this festival is dedicated to French music at the “turn of the century,” an extremely rich period that the public can explore through the finest works of French masters such as Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns, gabriel Fauré, eric Satie, Maurice ravel, César Franck or Francis poulenc.

the “a la française” Festival can count on what has become one of the characteristics of the Music Chapel: mentoring, thanks to the participation of internationally renowned musicians such as augustin dumay, Gary hoffman, Jean-philippe collard, abdel rahman el bacha or Gérard caussé, who are involved in particular with the Music Chapel’s soloists.

a five-day festival, with 12 concerts and more than fifty artists, the octopus chorus and two belgian orchestras on hand: the orchestre philharmonique royal de liège conducted by christian arming, as well as the brus-sels philharmonic under the baton of Michel tabachnik.

having become a house mark for Flagey, the “a la française” Festival is not exclusively musical. the program includes a satie evening which mixes songs and extracts from the nearly complete correspondence of erik Satie. Directed by Jean bellorini, this show is to be performed on 15 November by the ‘académie européenne de musique du Festival d’aix-en-provence’, a partner of the Music Chapel under the european Network of opera academies (eNoa).

the festival does not forget children and their families either, featuring in particular Saint-Saëns’s “le carnaval des animaux” during a concert related on images of Danieli on Saturday, 17 November at 11:00 aM (in coopera-tion with the “Maison de la Musique”).

and still in this ‘mentoring’ spirit, the festival has once again been the subject of a competition among students of la Cambre (national school of visual arts). Flagey will exhibit all the poster projects during the festival.

the festival will be brought to a close on Saturday evening, 17 November, with a performance of Fauré’s requiem in its version for large orchestra, which the composer completed in 1901.

We wish you, dear attentive public, a fine festival! bernard de launoit gilles ledureexecutive president DirecteurChapelle Musicale reine elisabeth Flagey

brussels philharMonic

brussels philharmonic was established in 1935 under the aegis of the public broadcasting network (Nir). the orchestra has performed with leading conductors and soloists and has created new works by world-famous composers such as Stravinsky, Messiaen and Francesconi. brussels philharmonic and music director Michel tabachnik are at home in brussels, both in Flagey, where it rehearses, and in boZar. in addition, the orchestra is at home at major venues in Flanders. on the international scene, the orchestra has a residency at the Cité de la musique (paris), the extensive internationally recognized experience of the orchestra in film music includes Martin Scorsese’s ‘the aviator’, and more recently the oscar winning silent movie ‘the artist’. brussels phil-harmonic is supported by the Flemish Community.

Michel tabachniK CoNDuCtor

as Music Director, Michel tabachnik has been a key figure in the work of brussels philharmonic since 2008. his idiosyncratic yet highly accessible programmes, in which the great orchestral repertoire is combined with music from the 20th century, are reaching an ever bigger and wider audience. together with the orchestra, tabachnik is also consolidating the sound international reputation built up over the past few years. Michel tabachnik studied piano, composition and conducting in geneva. after his studies, he was coached by a number of iconic conductors: he was igor Markevitsj’s assistant and acted for four years as assistant conductor of pierre boulez (in london). after this herbert von karajan invited him to conduct his orchestra in berlin for a number of years.

Since 2011 the new Music Director Christian arming brings both youth and experience to an orchestra dedicated to excellence, exploration, and a spirit of openness towards all kinds of audiences. Founded in 1960, the oprl, under the leadership of its founder, Fernand Quinet, and of conductors such as paul Strauss, pierre bartho-lomée, louis langrée, and pascal rophé, has developed an identity that is unique in europe – a blend of the discipline of german orchestras and the “transparency” of the French tradition with an openness to new work and to a vast range of repertoire. Well represented on disc the oprl is also an ambassador abroad of belgium’s French-speaking Community, touring regularly. Since 2000 it also runs the Salle philharmonique in liège.

christian arMinG CoNDuCtor

the musical director of the liège royal philharmonic orchestra since 2011, Christian arming was born in Vi-enna, where he studied conducting with leopold hager. between 1992 and 1998, he cooperated closely with Seiji ozawa, which led him to conduct several times the boston Symphony orchestra in tanglewood and the New Japan philharmonic in tokyo. at the age of 24, he was the youngest conductor appointed to head the Janácek philharmonic orchestra of ostrava, a position he has occupied since 2002. From 2001 to 2004, he was the musi-cal director of the lucerne Symphony orchestra. From 2003 to 2013 he holds the post of musical director of the New Japan philharmonic. Christian arming has conducted more than 50 orchestras throughout the world and is equally at ease with the classical, romantic and contemporary repertoire. he is also much in demand at the opera. in a little over ten years, he has recorded works by brahms, beethoven, Mahler, Janácek and Schmidt, for Fontec and arte Nova/bMg.

born in beirut in 1958, abdel rahman el bacha lives in France where he attended advanced classes from the age of sixteen. Since the dazzling revelation of his talent at the Queen elisabeth international Competition in 1978, which he won unanimously, and after a hiatus to extend his repertoire, he has performed in the most prestigious venues in europe and throughout the world, Since his first record, devoted to prokofiev’s early works, for which he won the Charles Cros academy’s grand prize, he has recorded numerous works (bach, rav-el, Schubert, Schumann, rachmaninov) at Forlane, as well as prokofiev’s 5 concertos (live) at Fuga libera. his complete sonatas of beethoven and works for piano solo by Chopin - in chronological order - are a resounding success, in the concert hall and on CD. abdel rah-man el bacha, who teaches piano at the Queen elisabeth Music Chapel, is also a composer.

Fullness of tone, perfect technique, and an exceptional artistic sensibility characterise the style of gary hoffman. he made his début at Wigmore hall in london at the age of 15, then moving to New york. at 22, he became the youngest professor at the renowned School of Music of the university of indiana. presently Master in residence at the Music Chapel, he teaches highly talented young cellists. after winning the First grand prize of the rostropo-vich Competition in paris in 1986, he began an international career, and has performed with the greatest orchestras in the united States and Canada, but also in europe and asia. While he has a preference for the great classical repertoire for cello, gary hoffman is nonetheless not at all averse to contemporary music, for which he is a committed spokesman. living since 1990 in paris, he plays a 1662 Nicolo amati that belonged to leonard rose. gary hoff-man has recorded for bMg (rCa), Sony, eMi, and le Chant du Monde. his next recording, devoted to Mendelssohn, will appear in 2012 with la Dolce Volta.
