MissionUtah’s Hogle Zoo nurtures respect and appreciation for the natural world by providing diverse educa-tional, recreational and conservation opportunities. This is accomplished through imaginative exhibits and programs, professional animal care and a commitment to excellence.

1

As we entered 2013, construction on the new African Savanna project was accelerating, and that progress continued throughout the year, towards our anticipated opening in May 2014. Other exciting and important activities during the year included the unique and fun LEGO©: Creatures of Habitat exhibition, expansion of both on-site and field conservation programs, the opening of the Lighthouse Point water park, and the development and adoption of a new Master Plan to guide major Zoo improvements through 2030. In addition, we continued our signature events, such as our Zoo Rendezvous fundraiser, our ZooLights! winter holiday celebration, and we reached a milestone in hosting the 20th annual World of the Wild juried art exhibition. Everything mentioned here is designed to create great experiences and connections for our guests. In the course of that pursuit, we welcomed more than one million guests in 2013, making it the fourth year out of five to exceed that milestone in attendance.

The core of our mission is to nurture respect and appreciation for the natural world, and that begins with providing the best possible care for our resident Zoo animals. Our Animal and Vet-erinary departments work as a team to keep every animal in our care in good health, both physi-cally and mentally. Animal welfare goes beyond the basics of food, water, and shelter. We focus on providing appropriate social groupings, environmental enrichment, preventive medicine, and training to facilitate routine examinations and stimulate natural behaviors.

All of this and more is detailed in the pages that follow, including our 2013 financial perfor-mance. We are proud to have once again finished the year with positive cash flow to enable the continued improvements around the Zoo. The success of 2013 has positioned Utah’s Hogle Zoo to continue being a dynamic and impactful community organization, and we will strive to con-tinue making the Zoo the best it can be: for our animals, our guests, our employees and volun-teers, and for everyone in the community who continues to support us.

won “Best New In-novative Bear Husbandry Technique” at the interna-tional Bear Care Group’s

Advancing Bear Care Conference in Clinton,

New Jersey.

Senior Keeper Stephanie Jochum-

Natt spearheads our Wild Aware Utah program.

WAU supports the Zoo’s mis-sion by educating our guests and area residents on living harmo-

niously with local wildlife.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo became the world’s

first zoo to get a voluntary blood draw from a western

lowland gorilla. Senior Keep-ers Bobbie Gordon and Erin Jones

trained Jabali, an 8-year-old female, to offer her arm for the procedure,

making her a voluntarily partici-pant in her own health care.

Animal EnrichmentBehavioral Programs Manager Dawn “DeeDee” Neptunereceived national recognition for her animal enrichment leadership from the following:

3

Association of Zoos and Aquariums

Faculty Member for week-long AZA Animal Enrichment Profes-sional Develoment course

• Institutional Representative to AZA Behavioral Advisory Group & Animal Welfare Committee

• Committee Advisor to AZA Behav-ioral Husbandry and Animal Wel-fare Committees

American Association of Zoo Keepers

• Contributing Presenter to Online Collaborative Learning Webinars

• Committee Advisor to AAZK Be-havioral Husbandry Committee

Association of Zoo Veterinarians

• Workshop Co-Presenter, “Elevating Animal Health Through Behavioral Management”

In her spare time, Deedee was

also Trip Leader of a Conservation Safari to

Kenya, and Chair of the first annual “Winos for Rhinos”

event, raising more than $14,000 for rhino

conservation.

Congratulations, DeeDee!

The greater sage-grouse is a threatened species. Zoo staff and volunteer conser-vation activities have resulted in place-ment of 50,000 warning reflectors on

prairie fences to help them avoid colliding with fences in their

western Wyoming habitat.

Conservation: Nature/WildlifeThe Zoo had a global presence in our conservation efforts; supporting 32 projects on five continents.

4

Our Wild Aware Utah partnership with the United States Forest Service, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Utah State University Extension Services educates Utahns throughout the state about how to live successfully with wildlife.

Creatures of Habitat, the LEGO© brick animal exhibit, was both fun and educational,

teaching guests about endangered species

and habitat preservation.

In 2013, Hogle Zoo and the Utah Chapter of the Ameri-can Association of Zoo Keep-ers raised nearly $30,000 for rhinoceros conservation.

General Curator, Dr. Christina Castellano, continues her work in Madagascar, protecting the critically

endangered radiated tortoise. Illegally collected tortoises that have been confiscated by the authorities are “repatriated,” where they will be

protected under organized community stewardship.

Conservation: On-Grounds Resources

Of our two newest large buildings, one (Animal Health Center) has been certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold, and one (Conservation Resource Center) has an application pending for a similar designation by the U. S. Green Building Council. 5

Hogle Zoo is committed to environmentally sustainable practices. During 2013:

In addition:We use recycled

office and bathroom supplies, recyclable food-

service dishware and water-wise plantings to further

reduce our carbon footprint.

142 Zoo employ-ees participated in

the “Ultimate Alternate Transportation Challenge,”

saving more than 30,000 miles they would have driven,

commuting by car to the Zoo.

• We purchased 60,000 kwh of wind power through the Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky Program.

• We generated 75,000 kwh of solar power on top of three of our largest buildings.

• We used high efficiency light bulbs - saving 24,000 kwh.

That’s enough energy savings to avoid 200 tons of carbon dioxide or equivalent to planting 2,400 trees!

97% of the construction-site

rubble from our new 4.4 acre African Savanna exhibit

was diverted to be reused or recycled.

Master Plan Intro & African Savanna PreviewFollowing successful completion of our first 15-year Master Plan, initiated in 1999, a special committee of Board members, staff and consultants invested much of 2013 creating a new Master Plan for the Zoo’s next 15 years. For a panoramic view, please turn the page.

2014 is set to be another banner year for Hogle Zoo, with the African Savan-na expanse set to open in May.

This 4.4-acre exhibit will feature African lions, zebras, giraffes, nyala (a southern African antelope), ostriches and other birds.

The Savanna will introduce an expanded train ride and an elevated Savanna viewing deck and giraffe feeding station.

from 23 countries.

Attendees included the AZA Nutrition Ad-visory Group.

We teamed with the University of Utah for a Fish Medicine work-shop.

Our vets and keepers applauded conference guests as they entered the Zoo.

The Conference and the welcoming ap-plause were well-re-ceived by all!

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is proud to be accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). AZA sets rigorous standards dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of con-servation, education, science and recreation. Only 223 zoos and aquariums in North America are accredited by AZA.

The Zoo continues to be active in AZA conservation efforts and participates in a number of Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs), studbooks, Species Survival Plans© and AZA national commit-tees. We are dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you and a better future for all living things.
