BALIKESİRA big part of Balıkesir city is in South Marmara Region and it also has another part in Aegean Region. It surrounded by Bursa and Kütahya in the east, İzmir and Manisa in the south, Aegean Sea and Çanakkale in the west, Marmara Sea in the north. City of Balıkesir has 20 districts and its population was 1.189.057 in 2014. Throughout history, Balıkesir was a city of transition and it has coasts on two seas. It has an important place in the economy of Turkey with its agriculture, livestock breeding, forestry, mine and other branches of industry, tourism and trade.The city of Balıkesir has an identity of a modern, safe and peaceful student city with its natural, archeological, historical and cultural beauties.

History of Balıkesir University

The foundation of Balıkesir University trace back to Karesi Teacher School established in 1910. This school has been carried to the building which is used as Necatibey Faculty of Education with particular interests of the Minister of Education, Mr. Mustafa Necati. Till 1982, the number of higher education institues reached 4: Necati Institution of Education, Architecture and Engineering State Academy, Balıkesir School of Industry and Tourism, Balıkesir Vocational School.

These foundations changed status with Delegated Legislation No 41, and were connected to Uludag University. Necatibey Teacher’s Training School continued to train teachers between the years 1932 and 1982 under the name of Necati Institution of Education, left its 3-year status, received 4-year-Higher Teacher Training School status. In 1982, having been connected to Uludağ University, this foundation has been called Necatibey Faculty of Education. In the same way, the name of Balıkesir School of Industry and Tourism has been changed as Balıkesir School of Tourism and Hotel Management, but the name of 2-year-Balıkesir Vocational School has remained the same. Having stayed under the roof of Uludağ University for 10 years, these foundations has formed a powerful background for Balıkesir University with healthy and consistent development.

Balıkesir University was founded in accordance with the law 3837 published in 21281 numbered gazette dated July 11st, 1992.

Çağış Campus Cagis Campus has been established on 5000 hectared-area on the 17th km of Balıkesir-Bigadic Road inside Cagis and Pasakoy borders.

Transportation


Balıkesir University has many alternatives for accommodation in the city of Balıkesir. Some students are staying Balıkesir KYK dormitory which has a capacity of 2.024 people. Also, there are two dormitories in Cagis Campus; Residorm with a capacity of 1500 people and KYK with a capacity of 1000 people. Another dormitory is BAÜ Vakfı dormitory with a capacity of 289 people. Apart from these places, the students can rent an apartment in the city and there are also many other private dormitories in the city of Balıkesir.

Accommodation


For our students healthy nutrition, food menus are prepared in accordance with the nutritional values and calories of food in the dining hall. The meals are served at affordable prices to our university’s students. Also, free meals are served to the students with financial problems. Apart from the dining hall, there are also canteens and cafes where the students can have breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Medical FacilitiesIn Medico-social unit, four general practitioners, two dentists, one psychologist, eight nurse, serves. Services are provided in the garden of NEF and Çağış Campus within working hours,.

In addition, students are provided consultancy services related to all kinds of health problems. Treatment services, emergency response, observed, injections, dressings, wound and burn care are maintained.

Through the Ministry of National Education, Foreign students’ expenses for all kinds of health are covered by the Department of Health, Culture, Sports.Such a unit is not on at the university. However, there is a psychologist in the center of Medico. Psychologist provides consulting service about students’ coping with exam stress, adjustment problems, family problems, self-esteem problems, adolescent issues, and other issues.

InsurenceStudents benefit from health care facilities in the university.

To cover their health costs, exchange students are advised to obtain proper medical insurance valid in Turkey.

At Balıkesir University,in an attempt to protect and develop the body health of students and academic staff,to provide them to take interest in sports, and to support their performance in their favorite sports fields, sportive activities have been carried out via Health-Culture and Sports Department Sport Activities Branch Office. For these purposes, 2 Gymnasiums,1 Football Field,1 swimming pool,6 tennis courts,6 basketball fields,2 astroturfs,4 volleyball fields,2 volleyball sand fields,1 running track, and 1 fitness center are in service of our students. Every year , Balıkesir University Presidency Cup, Spring Festivals, and sport activities in totally 22 branches such as football, volleyball, tennis etc. within the scope of İnter-Universities Tournaments are arranged.

A student council responsible for expressing the problems, ideas and recommendations of students to the rector through Senate talks is taking active part in meetings. Members of student council consists of student representatives chosen by elections every year.

Balıkesir University has the principle of making use of information technologies at the highest level for education. In every building of the university, people have access to free Wi-Fi. The students can make every course registration process online. The students can also have an e-mail account given by the university.

Balıkesir University Central Library provides students and lecturers with fundamental sources of information to support education and research activities.

Library Services



The International Office coordinates international relationships and agreements with foreign institutions in the university. The principle purposes of the office are to promote the university in international arena and to develop cultural and academic ties with foreign higher education institutions. The Office is responsible for implementing the EU Education and Cultural programs, the 7th Framework Programme, and Bologna process in the university. In order to internationalize the university, the Office, on one hand, develops ties with EU and non-EU institution and, on the other hand, trains university personnel about international opportunities. The Office actively involves in the EU Education and Youth programs and we aim to improve University’s performance in these programs. International Relations Office



Farabi Exchange Office in Balıkesir University is coordinating student exchanges between Balıkesir University and other higher education institutions in Turkey. With this exchange program, the students in Balıkesir University have the opportunity to study in another higher education institution in Turkey for one or two semesters.

Mevlana Exchange Programme is a programme which aims the exchange of students and academic staff between the Turkish higher education institutions and higher education institutions of other countries. With the regulation published in August 23, 2011 (num: 28034), students and academic staff exchange between Turkish higher education institutions and higher education institutions of other countries has been possible.

The programme includes all higher education institutions throughout the world without discriminating between the geographical borders. The higher education institutions of EU countries benefiting from Erasmus programme will not be included in Mevlana Exchange Programme in 2014-2015 academic year.

Students may study abroad for one (minimum) or two (maximum) terms and academic staff may lecture abroad from one week (minimum) to three months (maximum). Accordingly, students and academic staff from any country may benefit from this programme being hosted by Turkish higher education institutions in order to study or lecture.

Education


Semesters for Education Every year has two semesters in Balıkesir University. However, one course can be taught for a whole year according to the decisions of University Senate. One semester is at least 70 days. The senate can change this period if needed. Registration and exam periods are not included to a semester period. An academic calendar for each year is determined by the University Senate.

Double MajorThe aim of double major program is to provide successful students with the opportunity of being able to study one more bachelor program and have one more graduation diploma. The students of bachelor level have the opportunity to do double major in Balıkesir University.

Summer semester education The main purpose of summer semester is to give the students one more chance to pass their exams for specific courses and thus they will have got rid of the burden of studying many courses in the next semester. The period of summer semester is also determined by the University Senate in accordance with fall and spring semesters.

Registration The students who have met the requirements of studying in Balıkesir University can be registered to undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate schools by providing necessary documents on time and in accordance with procedures. The students have to be re-registered every semester with the approval of their supervisors in departments. The students who do not renew their registration cannot be enrolled for this semester. In this case, the students can renew their registration for the next semester.

Enrollment for courses The students can enroll for courses with an online system. If the students are to choose between failed courses of previous year and the upcoming courses, the priority is given to failed courses of previous year.

Attendance If the attendance to theoretical courses is not at least 70% the student will fail from that course. If the attendance to laboratory or similar works is not at least 80%, the student will fail from that course. If a student fails from a course by reason of attendance, he/she cannot take the exam for this course either.

Exams There are two exams for a semester: mid-term and end-term. In an exam of one course, one or more than one written, verbal or practical method can be applied.

Student Counselling System To help the students about planning their future, guiding them about social and cultural activities, the university has the policy of attaining a counsellor lecturer for students.

Graduation and Diploma A student who has succeeded in all of the courses and works in his/her program in his/her school, has the right to graduate and get a diploma in his/her field.

Diploma SupplementA Diploma Supplement is given to every student after graduation which is valid in EU and EU member countries.

Necatibey Faculty of Education founded with the name of Karesi Darülmuallimin in 1910. The school moved to its today’s location in 1932 while Mustafa Necatibey was working as Ministry of Education. And then it was called Necatibey Teacher Training School. The Necatibey Faculty of Education continued to train teachers in between 1932 and 1982 with the names of Institute of Necatibey Education and Necatibey Teacher Training High School. In 1982, It was called Necatibey Faculty of Education after joining to (Bursa) Uludag University. Necatibey Faculty of Education has been continuing Education under Balikesir University since 1992.

Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in Balıkesir University was a former state academy for engineering and architecture. It is a faculty with 4 years of bachelors level education. It was founded in 1976 as an academy. In 1982, it was part of Uludağ University and from 1992 and on it is a faculty of Balıkesir University.

This faculty was founded in 1993 and had departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Turkish Language and Literature then. In the following years, History, Geography, Sociology, Molecular Biology and Genetics departments were also available. The students of this faculty can also be teachers of their field with a pedagogical certificate that they will acquire. Some departments in the faculty have laboratories.

Faculty of Fine Arts which was founded in 2005 has the aims of; creating authentic works of art with traditional teaching methods, bringing about contemporary painters, improving intuition skills of artists and developing observing and interpreting skills. Faculty of Medicine was founded in 2006 and its first students were of 2009-2010 Academic Year. Education of expertise in medicine is also provided in this faculty. Faculty of Tourism was founded in 1975 under Bursa Academy of Economics and Administrative Sciences with the name of Balıkesir School of Tourism and Hotel Management. Until 1982, it had departments of tourism and hotel management. In 1992, it became a part of Balıkesir University and from 2013 on it is a faculty. This faculty has many connections with tourism companies, hotels, restaurants, etc. both in Turkey and abroad.

School of Physical Education and Sports was founded in 2000 and started educational activities with first students in Sports management department in 2002. There are many national sportsman and sportswoman in this school. They represent our country in braches such as athletics, football, judo, karate, cycling, table tennis and triathlon. The activities of the students in our school is supported by winter and summer camps throughout the year. In this regard, students can attend activities of mountain climbing, underwater sports, skiing and sailing.
