  • TOM GARRIGUE MASARYK SQUARETbor, Czech republic

  • For many decades, TGM square in Tbor was a placeto host numerous public events and markets as wellas place for high school students and locals to relax. In recent years though, it didn't meet therequirements for hosting such events anymore. So in2012 the city of Tbor announced an openarchitectural project competition to revitalise thesquare.

Proposed design provides a large concrete plane infront of the Agricultural High School for all sorts ofcultural and social events and markets to take place. The cast concrete surface is cut into expansion unitswith interactive RGB LED lighting placed in the joints.LED lights are controlled by a set of 6 illuminatedpressure plates and are arranged in oor plan toassemble letters TGM, referring to the rst presidentof Czechoslovakia Tom Garrigue Masaryk.

Major new element to the site is "Student Grove", anarea of 41 trees arranged in 6x7 raster, surroundinga historic Red Army Soldier statue. Grove alsocontains cast concrete furniture, hammocks, powersockets and reading lamps. Situated near the citylibrary, it is meant to be the "living room" of thesquare.

On the west side of the square, there is a restoredstripe of arboretum, which, until 1950s, used to coverthe whole site.

In 2012, the proposal was picked by an independentpanel among 50 other entries in the competition.Project started a year later and in July 2014,construction work begun with a budget of 20m CZK(720.000 EUR). Completition is scheduled for summer2015.

    COMPETITION YEAR / 2013

In 2012, a competition for students of architecture

from Czech and Slovak republic was set to nd a

bold and interesting design for a building to host

exhibitions, lectures and opportunities for people

interested in architecture and design to meet.

Proposed building is situated at the north edge of

Letn park for its accessibility by public transport

and to provide a great panoramic view of Prague.

Building contains an info-desk, lecture room, design

shop, a caf and a scale model of Prague.

Concept is to have a simple geometrical outer shell

of the building transparent, with individual functions

"oating" inside, connected together by an open

staircase and a series of bridges. Terraces on 2nd

and 3rd storey provide a place to relax and

experience this sensation of oating volumes and at

the roof terrace there is great view of the city.

  • URBAN DESIGN OF JIHLAVA RIVER WATERFRONTTeb, Czech republic

  • Rapid development and need for a large scale

infrastructure in Teb in late 70's led to an almost

complete demolition of Staeka district, former

historic settlement dating its roots back to the 12th

century. Diverse structure of narrow streets and

historical houses gave way to a 9 platform bus

terminal, a shopping center and a parking lot.

Another major change came in 2012 in form of very

insensitively designed ood walls on Jihlava river

coming right through the city center.

Subject of the diploma thesis was to reintroduce

Jihlava river to the public space, displace the bus

terminal to a more suitable location and revitalise the

district close to its original scale and structure.

Waterfront is treated with minimal, detail-oriented

interventions because of its immediate proximity to

the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jewish Town and

St.Procopius Basilica. And over 150 new apartment

units, 36 residential units, 1400m2 of civic amenities,

5800m2 of oAce space and 3500m2 of shops are

carefully planned on the vacant sites of Staeka,

while preserving the industrial heritage, present

    throughout the city.

  • POROTHERM APARTMENTSBrno, Czech republic

  • Subject of this open, anonymous competition was to

design an urban villa-house containing 3 to 7

apartments with a use of Porotherm construction

    system and materials.

Narrow frontal facade of the proposed project is

suitable for even a very space-limited site and at the

same time putting the Porotherm construction

system to an optimal use without raising the costs

unnecessarily. Simple cubic shape of the building

also helps the heat insulation e*ectiveness.

Color contrasting block of staircase steps outwards

from the main volume for the oor plan to remain

    simple and intuitive.

  • Subject of the competition was an unused brewerySvtovar, build in 1910, and its conversion for a newuse in context of "PILSEN: THE EUROPEAN CAPITALOF CULTURE 2015".

Proposal opens up the former industrial area to thepublic and connects it thoroughly with the city. Thereis a cultural and social center with multipurposehalls, galleries, exhibition spaces, studios and atelierapartments.

Vital point was not to interfere with constructionunnecessarily, but to nd a suitable layout within thebuilding for a prompt conversion at acceptable cost.
