Task 1 : Compare and contrast

Introduction

A poem is a creative form of writing. It uses beautiful language or expressions to convey experiences, ideas or emotions in an imaginative way. It is usually written in stanzas and has a certain rhyme scheme or free verse.I chose my poem related the theme nature. I chose my poem related to nature because nature is a very big context and I can talk more about it. The title of my poem is River. I chose the poem from internet. I came across many poem based on the theme nature. But this poem attracted me because I can understand the poem easily and it written in a very sweet also simple language. It stands in four stanzas. The author of this poem is Mrs.Brianna Noyota. I have chosen and read most of her poems in internet. And I noticed that she is prefer to write poems based on the theme Nature. She is also a Japanese woman. I really wonder, even a Japanese lady also can bring many wonderful poems. The title of my second poem is The River. This poem is actually from the book Let Me Touch the Sky. The author of this book Valerie Bloom. Valerie was born in 1956, first came to England in 1979, and is now based in Kent, but continues to travel around the UK and abroad adding to her thousands of performances, workshops and school visits. Her poetry has become widely known through her books, those of her own poetry and anthologies she has edited, plus a novel, and she was commissioned to write a poem on Celebration for National Poetry Day 2002. At last count, her poetry had been printed in over 250 anthologies, as well as appearing frequently on television, stage and radio. I chose quite same poems but the author is different. This is because when I compare and contrast the poems, easily I can find out the differences and settings of the poems. Valerie Bloom also a well-known writer. I did some research on her poems in internet. And finally I came across that is interesting writing poem especially for children.

Comparison of the poems

Comparison of settingSetting is the place or location of the action or the place of the poem. The setting provides the historical and cultural context for characters. It often can symbolise the emotional state of characters. Setting in poems also show the context and environment in which a situation is set or the background.

Comparison of tone/ moodMood is a state of mind or emotion and can be voice in the poem. It also a pervading impression of an observer. Poems can reflect the mood of the writer. We can also understand the feeling or the impression of the writers in their poems. The attitude of the persona in the poem with his or her choice of words.

Comparison of moral value in the poemsMoral value is a good thing or good behavior that contain in the poems. Moral values are things held to be right or wrong or desirable or undesirable in poem. While morality is sometimes described in poems. The lessons that a reader can learn from the poems.

Comparison of message/ meaning in the poemsAll poems can be interpreted at two levels or meanings which is literal meaning and figurative meaning. The literal meaning refers to the general meaning of the poem, that is, its meaning as it appears to mean. Generally the title will give an inkling of what the poem is about. It reflects the overall meaning of the poem. The figurative meaning refers to the deeper or implied meaning of the poem. One has to read between the lines to understang the figurative meanings. It also refers to ones interpretation of the poem which is based on ones understanding of the idea in the poem.

Task 2 : Personal Response/ My point of view

Well, both poems poems were selected under the theme of nature and precisely on river. Both poets are nature lovers as they revealed on the present conditions of the rivers that we have on the globe at present. River by Brianna Noyota and The River by Valerie Bloom, both were giving an overall exposure on its conditions, nature and the way the people use them at present where it touches on the importance of the Mother Natures gift. River by Brianna Noyota, that consists of four stanzas, is written in order to brief on the characteristics of a river and its behaviour. The poet also clearly mentions that the river is clean and fresh as we, the human being do not ever misjudge it. The poet clearly highlights that the river to her that we, the human being never try to challenge it as it would not waits for long and punishes anyone who dares doing so.Whereas, The River by Valerie Bloom, also mentions the rivers multiple characteristics as the wanderer, a winder, a hoarder, a baby, a singer and as a monster. She has chosen the most suitable metaphor that suits the river that see sees. She does reveal that the multiple uses of a river, in her perception. Her poem clearly mention that she is a naturalist who loves rivers on earth and at the same time, Valerie does wish the people with all walks of life do understand and preserve the river, one of the Mother Natures gift to be saved for our next generations. Both the poets, of course use simple language as the they emphasize on nature rather than the language. Their ultimate purpose or aim are just on the heritage that a river has and they want the people to appreciate it without any reasons. They just wish educate the people to understand well on its importance and not polluting them for their own short term gains, perhaps. The River by Valerie Bloom reveals that the poet wishes the people or the public to be exposed on the characteristics of a river and she direly wants the public to understand well on the people responsibility to preserve it without polluting or try to challenge it. Valerie, also as a naturalist wants the public to know its behaviour and respect it. She also mentions the multiple uses of a river. Besides, Valerie Blooms highlights the good and the bad of a river. Her poem always be and advice to the public on how we need to see as she sees the river in general.Meanwhile, Brianna Noyota, another well-established poet, a nature lover, reveals that the multiple characteristics of a river in simple language. She also emphasizes on the importance of having another Mather Nature gift on this globe. Its a kind advice to all that we, as the human being who rule this world also need to sit and think that we need to preserve the river for our own benefit. In four stanzas, Brianna Noyota describes the river in her point of view that she warns everyone that we do not miscalculate the rivers characteristics as it may harm you. Its just a reminder to anyone who happens to see this poem and she also wants to educate the public and the school going children that they have to be nurtured on the importance of having rivers on earth. The setting is always mingles around the venue and the time. Although the place is a river and no time is mentioned as both poets or naturalists just wants to educate the public on the importance of preserving the rivers as theyre common phenomenon on this globe, currently. Both the poets used the simple language with some selected terms that can make the public or the children to understand on the theme. Lots of adjectives were used in their poems as to describe the rivers characteristics well. Any walks of people able to understand the poems.Brianna Noyota describes her river as the children and public can understand well but Valerie Bloom has done a wonderful job compares to Brianna because she has made her poem more clearer and attractive. Definitely, the school going children would definitely love to read and enjoy Valeries writings.Valerie Bloom has used many metaphors such as wanderer, a baby, a winder, a hoarder, a singer and as a monster in her poem. These metaphors would make any reader to get attracted compared to Brianna Noyota where her poem found to be so flat and very little attractions compared to Valerie Bloom.

Reflection I chose poems based on the theme nature. Both the poets, of course use simple language as the they emphasize on nature rather than the language. Their ultimate purpose or aim are just on the heritage that a river has and they want the people to appreciate it without any reasons. Even though the poets used very simple language but I still need to hold my dictionary to fine out same meanings. This is a very new and different experience for me especially when compare the poems. Its quite a tough task also but I really enjoy the job. Through this assignment I come across to know about many famous poets. This task help me also to improve my English knowledge as well. I also studied about the history of poem a bit. Poetry has a long history, dating back to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. The earliest poems evolved from folk songs, such as the Chinese Shijing, or from the need to retell oral epics, such as the Sanskrit Vedas, Zoroastrian Gathas, and the Homeric epics, the Odyssey and the Iliad. Ancient attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song, and comedy. Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from more objectively informative, prosaic forms of writing. From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more generally labeled as a fundamental creative act using language.

Nature PoemsEnvironment PoemRiver Brianna NoyotaCharging right on by Deep and clear and blue Sparing not a single glance As it passes you.

Nothing but mossy rocks And lots of water too Gracefully gliding down A deathly deep blue.

Sweeping anything away If it gets in its path Anyone can easily see Its fury and its wrath

If you enter this trap, Youll be a survivor, If you learn to outsmart This dangerous river.
