13th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage cities, Arequipa, Peru

Urban market-gardening has been carried out in Bamberg since the Middle Ages. Europe-wide trade in seeds and liquorice root once formed a signicant part of the local economy. Where once there were more than 500 gardening businesses, around 40 are active today. The inscription of the “Town of Bamberg” acknowledged the Market Gardeners’ District as a key part of the World Heritage site.

The Market Gardeners’ District is cha-racterized by the open spaces of the garden elds enclosed by streets of single-story gardeners' houses. In order to strengthen Bamberg’s garde-ning tradition and to withstand pres-sures of surrounding urban develop-ment the City of Bamberg has been ac-tively promoting urban gardening since 2009. Moreover, in 2014 'urban market-gardening in Bamberg' was in-cluded in the Bavarian State Register of intangible cultural heritage.
