Slunce se již klonilo k obzoru, nebe zalily červánky a já se vracela zahradou k bungalovu. Byl klid, dá-li se o něm mluvit v podvečerních tropech. U malého jezírka stál muž a pokýval na mě. Jsem Henri Morgan, představil se. Vidíte ji? Etlingera vyšší neboli „růže z porcelánu“. Magický květ! Uhranuta rudou nádherou nemohu odtrhnout zrak. Když se konečně otočím, strnu podruhé. Henri je fuč. Jen ohromný krab žblunknul pod kámen.

Sun was closing towards horizon and the sky was flooded with red clouds as I was walking through garden toward my bungalow. It was quiet, if you can even talk about it in early evening tropical climate. There was a man standing by a small pond nodding at me. He introduced himself, I’m Henri Morgan. Do you see her? Etlingera elatior or „Porcelain Rose“. Magical flower! Bewitched by red splendor, I find myself unable to look away. When I finally turn, I’m transfixed for the second time. Henri is gone. Just large crab plopped under a stone.

Teprve 51 let je Jamajka svobodnou zemí, čtu pod kvetoucím keřem z Průvodce. Po objevení Kryštofem Kolumbem v roce 1492 byla kolonií nejprve španělskou a pak britskou. Celá tři staletí však koloniální vlády bojovaly s piráty či se zbídačovanými domorodci. Až 6. srpna 1962 zavlála nad ostrovem zeleno-černo-zlatá vlajka svobody. Přesně ta, kterou tak často zvedá nad hlavu atlet Usain Bolt.

Sitting under blooming shrub, I read from a guidebook that Jamaica is free country for only 51 years. After being discovered by Christopher Columbus in the year 1492, it was at first Spanish, then British colony. Entire three centuries the colonial governments were fighting with pirates or impoverished natives. The green-black-gold flag of freedom did not fly above the island till the 6th of August 1962. The same one, which athlete Usain Bolt often rises above his head.

Probudily mě zvonky. Nad hlavou mi visí korálový déšť a zvoní a zvoní. Je čas vstávat, říká usměvavý mladík. Kdo jsi, ptám se omámená. Ty nevíš? Jsem přeci Henri Morgan. Ty??? Včera jsi vypadal úplně jinak, namítám. Tys také byla jiná, směje se. Sejdeme se pod krepovou myrtou a já ti to vysvětlím. Kde??? Vstávám a mnu si oči. Najdu jen „táborový šeřík“, ale Henri tam není.

Ležím se zavřenýma očima v písku. Jamajské slunce spaluje. Zvuk mořských vln mě uspává. Slyším svatební melodie ve stylu reggae. Nevěsta má kytici ze zvláštních květin. Jsou to pavoučí lilie. A bere si Spidermana. Ne! Vykřiknu a otevřu oči. Pozoruje mě kolibřík. Nade mnou visí tři oříšky. Natahuji ruku. Omyl! Je to palnice. A Henri Morgan o kus dál vyhrává reggae.

I lay on the sand with my eyes closed. Jamaican sun is scorching. The sound of waves is putting me to sleep. I hear wedding melody in reggae style. The bride has a bouquet made up of strange flowers. They are Beach Spider Lilies. She is marring a Spiderman. I shout: no! Then I open my eyes. Hummingbird is watching me. Three small nuts hang above me. I raise my hand. Oh no, it is Copperleaf. And reggae is played nearby by Henri Morgan.

Odpočívám ve stínu pod barvínkem růžovým, v jedné ruce drink a ve druhé Průvodce. To je mi ale překvapení! Kolik různých náboženství na tak malém ostrově. A mezi nimi čeští bratři, závorka Moravané, konec závorky, bratru asi v počtu 2800. To mi hlava nebere. Tak čeští nebo moravští?! A ten počet není malý. Před očima mi pochodují postavičky a zdraví mě: Hello sister!

I rest in a shade of Madagascar Periwinkle, in one hand drink and in the other guidebook. This is a surprise! So many different religions on such a small island. And among them Czech brothers, parenthesis Moravians, end of parenthesis, about 2800 of brothers. It is unbelievable. So, Czech or Moravian brothers? The number of them is not small. There are characters marching in front of my eyes and they are greeting me: Hello sister!

Mezi nejmagičtější rostliny patří se svými květy Sanchezia nobilis, neboli sanchezie vznešená. Skutečně „šlechtična“, barevná a krásná jako Jamajka. Jsem také šlechtic, křičí na mě Henri. Jsi klaun, a ne šlechtic, chechtám se při pohledu na třímetrové monstrum, a vidím tě dvojmo. Vezmi si brýle a dívej se na to divadlo. Jsi svědkem střetu civilizací v přímém přenosu. Pozoruji raději neviditelnou vážku. Není život jeden velký kabaret?

Sanchezia nobilis, also known as Fire Fingers, with its flowers belongs among the most magical plants. Really a noble woman, colorful and beautiful as Jamaica. Henri shouts at me: I’m also a noble man. I chuckle when I see three meter tall monster, and I see you double. Take glasses and look at this theatre. You are a witness of a clash of civilization in a life broadcast. I decide to rather watch an invisible dragonfly. Isn’t life one large cabaret?

Cestou na loď kolem mě kroužila stříbrná vážka. Jako by mně chtěla něco důležitého sdělit. Na přídi stál muž s dredy. Vítám tě, usmál se. Jsem Morgan. Panebože, Henri? Ne, jsem John, bratr. Ulevilo se mi. Kam pojedeme? Kam nás oceán zanese, odpoví. Přitížilo se mi. Asi po půl hodině loď zapraskala a začala se potápět. A já se propadala do teplého Karibského moře, kolem pluly hvězdice a medúzy a ryby a všude bylo krásné ticho jako v kostele.

Miluji motýly, ale motýli milují Durantu erectu, neboli vzpřímenou. Ani se jim nedivím. Také se mi líbí. Oblíbená je i ixora. Červená, šarlatová, bílá. Opilí nektarem se pak mění v rejnoky a jako zdrogovaní bláznivě poletují sem a tam. Kdo je dokáže vyfotit? Já se o to pokoušela mnohokrát a většinou neúspěšně. Podařilo se mi to, jen když v podvečer zemdlení odpadli dřív, než jsem odpadla já.

I love butterflyes, but they love Duranta erecta, also known as Sapphire Showers. I understand them, I like her as well. Flame of the Woods is also popular. Red, purple, white. They change to stingrays as they are drunk by nectar, and they fly here and there as if they were drugged. Who can take picture of them? I was trying many times, but mostly without any success. I was successful only during early evening when they exhausted fell down before I fell down myself.

V noci jsem neklidně spala. Henri přišel vařit večeři. Do rendlí-ku tři jehličky ze štětkovce citrónového, náprstek pelu z alpi-nie, povařit, míchat pírkem z hadího ptáka ohniváka a pak vypít nalačno. Probudila jsem se včas. Henri se chystá odejít. V ruce svírá den i noc. Bye, říká s úsměvem, Captain Morgan se stěhuje na Puerto Rico. Jó, tomu se říká globalizace.

At night I was sleeping restlessly. Henri came to cook a dinner. Place into saucepan three needles from Crimson Bottlebrush, thimble of bloom from Red Ginger, simmer, stir with Phoenix’s little feather, then drink on empty stomach. I woke up just in time. Henri is getting ready to leave. In his hand he is holding day and night. Bye, he says with smile, Captain Morgan is moving to Puerto Rico. That’s what I call globalization.

Listopad bývá deštivý a nevlídný. I na Jamajce sprchlo. Byl to ale tropický teplý, krátký a prudký slejvák. A zase pražilo slunce. Alpinie nachová zrůžověla, petunie mexická dokonce zfialověla. Žluťásek vyznával durantě erektě lásku. Marně. Je to nevěrnice nevěrná, dá každému. Na pláži mě oslovil muž a ptal se, jestli nepotřebuji chlapa. Nejsem „safírová sprcha“, směji se, ale on nechápe …

November is often unkind and rainy. Even in Jamaica was raining, but it was tropicly warm, short and intense downpour. And again the sun was beating down. Red Ginger became pink, Mexican Petunia became purple. Yeloow butterfly declared his love to Sapphire Showers. In vain. She is unfaithful one, she put’s up with anyone. While being on a beach men comes to me and ask: Do you need a guy. I’m not a Sapphire Showers, I laugh, but he does not understand …

Každá pohádka má svůj konec. I ta moje jamajská. Ring, ring, Jamaica drink, zpívá „potomek“ proslulého anglického korzára. A všichni tam sají. Kolibřík na ixoře i motýl na „safírových sprchách“. Vážka je na tom tak, že už ani nevzlétne. Já se sklenkou rumu Captain Morgan čekám na svůj let. Přeji i vám všem hladké přistání v roce 2015!

Every fairytale has its end, so does my Jamaican tale. Ring, ring, Jamaica drink, sings “descendant” of famous English Corsair. Everyone drinks there. Hummingbirds on Flame of the Woods as well as butterfly on “Sapphire Showers”. Dragonfly is in such condition, that it is unable to take off. I wait for my own flight with a glass of Captain Morgan rum. I wish all of you smooth landing in the year of 2015!

Kalendář Jamajka 2014 je již osmým v pořadí. Není jednoduché vždy přijít s něčím novým, pokud nebereme v potaz, že každý je věnován jiné zemi. A jsem překvapena (mile), že se dokonce stal středem zájmu sběratelů, byť stále zdůrazňuji, že nejsem profesionální fotografka ani spisovatelka. Tentokrát jsem popustila uzdu svojí fantazii možná víc, než je obvyklé. Chtěla jsem přiblížit atmosféru Jamajky, jejíž barvy, květiny, zvířata i lidé jsou skutečně snové. Doufám, že se vám líbil, a děkuji za podporu naší univerzity a stipendijního fondu pro sociálně a tělesně handicapované talentované studenty.

The calendar Jamaica 2014 is already the eights of its kind. It is not always easy to come up with something new unless we take into consideration the fact that each of the calendars is dedicated to a different country. Even though, as I always point out, I am neither a professional photographer nor a writer, I am (pleasantly) surprised that the calendar has even got the attention of collectors. Since I wanted to bring you closer to the atmosphere of Jamaica, whose colours, fauna, flora and people are truly dreamlike, I may have let my creativity go unrestrained more than usual. I hope you have enjoyed the calendar and I thank you for supporting our University and the scholarship fund for socially and physically handicapped talented students.
