The former Gothic castle was built in the 13th century by the Czech Šternberk family. The remnants of the original medieval fortress include some remains of fortifications and a cylindrical tower. The castle was rebuilt, expanded and modi-fied in the 14th and 16th centuries. In 1886, the castle underwent a general recon-struction in the style of romantic historicism according to a project of the Vienna architect Karl G. Kayser. The interiors are rich in artistic decoration, from Gothic to Art Noveau styles, mainly from the collections of the Liechtenstein family, the last owners of the castle.

Originally a Gothic castle, this is one of the oldest Moravian castles and is built in the style of a French castel. It was partly rebuilt into a Baroque chateau at the end of the 17th century. In 1898, the original owners of the castle, the Lich-tenstein family, founded a Museum of Forestry and Hunting, which contains a unique collection of trophies from the Liechtensteins’ African expeditions. Other attractions include a collection of quaint poachers‘ guns and hunting rifles.

This romantic natural and landscape park surrounds the building of a Greek-Revival chateau constructed in 1839-1844. Since 1768, the manor was owned by the members of the Portuguese House of Silva-Tarouca. The famous Czech painter Josef Mánes was a close friend of the family. Several small buildings were constructed in the chateau park: a Greek-Revival garden pavilion, a Neo-Gothic observation tower, and an orangery built in the same style. The chateau park in Čechy pod Kosířem ranks among the most valu-able facilities of historical green spaces in Moravia. The southern wing of the chateau houses an exhibition dedicated to the House of Silva-Tarouca and Josef Mánes. Current-ly undergoing renovations.

The chateau park is open daily from 8:00 until 18:00; admission is free of charge.

The extensive castle grounds (original Gothic castle mentioned as early as 1317–today’s appearance dates to reconstruction conducted in 1895–1910) are com-posed of the actual castle building, an entrance gate, castle walls, the castle moat, buildings below the castle, and two bridges, one of which (the bridge leading to the castle itself) includes a statue of St. John Nepomuk (likely from 1714). The grounds also include a 6.38 hectare park (created at the turn of the 20th century) and the neo-Baroque Chapel of the Virgin Mary (1910) situated at the entrance gate to the park. A number of films have been shot at the castle, including the fairy tales “O princezně Jasněnce a létajícím ševci” and “Princezna Fantaghiro”, the “Arabela” series and the “Young Indiana Jones” series.

In the late 15th century this originally Gothic castle was bought by the Pernstein family. In the early 17th century the chateau was purchased by Karel the Elder of Žerotín, who completed the redevelopment of the castle into a Renaissance chateau. Further building conversions of both the interiors and the exteriors were executed in the first half of the 19th century under Antonín, the Count of Magnis, and his son Vilém. The chateau essentially retained its Renaissance appearance during the time of the Lords of Dietrichstein, who owned the domain until the year 1858. The chateau and the adjacent farming wing underwent large-sca-le Neo-classicist reconstruction in the 1860s. Today the chateau serves as the seat of the Lipník nad Bečvou Town Office. A technically interes-ting modification of the roof of the former stables in the west courtyard wing was designed by the builder Zürek from 1863. This was the first rooftop garden north of the Alps at the time it was created. Originally built in 1910–1911, the rooftop garden underwent comprehensive re-novations in 2006.

It was first mentioned in the early 15th century and was gradually de-veloped up to the beginning of the 17th century. At present it is a four--wing two-floor chateau with a unique Renaissance arcade courtyard. The building underwent extensive reconstruction work at the end of the 20th century. While rooms are not regularly open to the public (they serve as office space for the Town Office), exhibitions and cultural events are held in the court and in the northern wing of the chateau.

The chateau, formerly part of the city walls, was erected by Johann of Pernstein in 1522-1526. In the late 16th century, it was redeveloped in Renaissance style, which is documented by an entrance portal of histo-ric and artistic value which ranks amongst the most beautiful portals in Moravia. In the mid-17th century, both the city and the chateau were burnt down by the Swedes. The last conversion of the building dates back to the early 20th century, when a sgraffito façade was constructed. The east wing of the chateau houses the Regional Tourist Centre.

This four-wing Renaissance chateau was built in the 16th century on the site of a water fortress which had been located here since before 1368. After 1480 the castle was owned by the Žerotín family. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries it was redeveloped into a Renaissance chateau with an arcade courtyard, preserved fortifications and a moat by Karel the Elder of Žerotín. Some Baroque modifications were carried out in the middle of the 17th century. In the 18th century several rooms were decorated with frescoes and a larger part of the fortifications was removed in the mid-19th century. At present the chateau houses the collections of the Dřevohostice Museum and an exhibition of the works of the sculptor J. Lendr. The chateau premises are also used for various cultural events.

At the southwest corner of the Olomouc City Hall, you can find the mo-dern Arion Fountain. Established in 2002, within the reconstruction of the Upper Square, it completes the set of Olomouc Baroque fountains inspired by ancient mythology. Ivan Theimer, its creator, is a famous na-tive of Olomouc who lives in France. The theme of the decoration of the sculpture is the ancient legend of Arion, a Greek poet, singer and kithara player, who was rescued from the waves by a dolphin that was attracted by Arion´s singing.

A small church stood on the site of today’s church as far back as the Romanesque period. A Gothic church was built there in 1371 and in the same year work began on an Augustinian monastery. Both structures suffered greatly during the Hussite Wars of the 15th century. The church burned twice afterwards and was therefore demolished in 1775; work then began on the construction of the current Classicist style church. The builder was Brno architect František Antonín Grimm, a leading figu-re in Moravian architecture at the time. The Šternberk Chapel features a rare restored ceiling painting by Kryštof Handke that depicts the histo-ry of Šternberk. Another important relic in the Šternberk church is the “Šternberk Madonna” – a stone statue from the end of the 14th century.

Featuring a combination of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Go-thic elements, the church is the most significant historical landmark in Mohelnice. The church was built on the site of the former parish Church of the Virgin Mary, mentioned in records in 1247. This church was ex-panded in the 14th century and then burned down by the Hussites in 1424. The addition of the Chapel of St. Anne and the Chapel of the Holy Cross were made in the Baroque style. The church was heavily damaged during a fire in the town in 1841, leading to Neo-Gothic reconstruction in 1886.

This 14th-century church is inscribed in the state list of cultural monu-ments as an important Gothic and Late Renaissance work. The church has burned down a total of eight times since its founding. At the end of the 20th century, during a vast reconstruction, the original scuncheon lining and a Gothic window were uncovered and the Gothic portal, rare in Moravia, was renovated. In the aisle, you can see the Holy Trinity altar from 1710, with rich Baroque decoration, fragments of mural paintings from the 14th century, and a Gothic gargoyle.

This financial institution became extremely important in the stru-ggles over Litovel and played a leading role in the construction of agri-cultural businesses in the town and the surrounding areas. The building subsequently became the centre of cultural life. In the second half of the 19th century halls were built on the first floor, with space for the bank on the left side; stores remained on the ground floor. The Medieval fortifications of the former royal town of Olomouc have only been preserved in fragments in light of later reconstruction work, the construction of the Olomouc Baroque fortress and its consequent termination with the destruction of large parts of the walls. The shape of the townwalls is at present lined by city parks. In Bezruč Park part of the walls are still preserved, including the so-called Jewish gate.

The barracks were built between 1750 and 1752 during the construc-tion of the defence system on the western side of the Olomouc bastion fort; as the line of last defence, the barracks also served as living quar-ters for troops. Artillery and infantry embrasures were built into the wall for defence purposes. The earth roof originally featured positions for ca-nnons. The water barracks were partially destroyed during the siege of the city in 1758. After reconstruction the barracks served until the Olo-mouc fort was cancelled; at the end of the 19th century a new entrance was opened to the city at the site of today’s Pavelčákova St. Today the water barracks house cafés and restaurants.

The remains of the town walls in Lipník nad Bečvou are among the best preserved in Moravia. Despite the fact that the town gates disappeared in the 19th century, relatively larges sections of both town walls with bastions were preserved. The town walls in Lipník nad Bečvou are visi-ble around the entire historical centre. It is assumed that the fortifica-tions were first made out of wood and later built from stone. The walls were built in their current form by the Pernstein family at the turn of the 16th century.

The Hranice Abyss is the deepest abyss in the Czech Republic and the second deep-est flooded abyss in the world. The dry part of the abyss has a depth of 69.5 m, but the majority of the space, however, is below the surface of the water. The current total depth of the abyss is 373 metres, but its bottom has not yet been reached. The Hranice Abyss was created by the collapse of the ceiling of the cave, which aggressive mineral water has carved into limestone in the direction from below to the surface. The lake is filled with mineral water with a temperature of 16-19 °C.

The Zbrašov Aragonite Caves are located in the river valley in the spa town of Teplice nad Bečvou. The caves are a remarkable system of European significance that was created by the concurrent effects of atmospheric water and warm mine-ral water rising from great depths through the limestone. The mineral aragonite creates magnificent ornamentation. The lowest levels of the caves are still filled with carbon dioxide. The caves are the warmest in the entire Czech Republic, with a constant year-round temperature of 14°C. A unique feature is the deepest abyss in Central Moravia, located near the town of Hranice.

The production of Olomouc tvarůžky cheese started as long as 500 years ago and in the Loštice A.W. cheese factory they have been made and aged since 1876. The genuine Olomouc Tvarůžky are a low-fat soft cheese ripening under a paste made of low-fat sour curd. They have a unique spicy taste and typical odour. This popular blue cheese with a mild and yet piquant flavour is produced in special cheese-making machines; the formed cheeses are salted in a salt bath and punctured to form the pores necessary for the growth of the mould.
