Atomic mass unit (u) – 1/12 the mass of a 12C atom(1 u equals 1.66054029x10-27 kg).
consequently, the mass of a 12C atom is exactly 12 u
Atomová hmotnostní jednotka
Hmotnostní spektrometrie – některé základní pojmy 2
Nominal mass of the molecule – the sum of the integer massesof the most abundant isotopes in a molecule.
N2, C2H4: nominal masses 2 x 14 = 28, 2 x 12 + 4 * 1 = 28, isobaric ions
C2H4: average mass = 28.0532, monoisotopic mass = 28.0313
Nominální hmotnost
Monoizotopická hmotnost
Průměrná hmotnost
Monoisotopic mass/Exact mass of the molecule – similar definition as for nominalmass but instead of the sumof the integer massesexact masses are used.
N2, C2H4: exact masses 2 x 14.0031 = 28.0061, 2 x 12 + 4 x 1.007825 = 28.0313
Average mass of the molecule – includes the weighted average of all the naturallyoccurring isotopes of the constituting elementsof the molecule.

Mass spectrum – a classic mass spectrum appears withunits of m/z on the x axis, and the term “relative abundance/intensity”on the y axis. The most intense peak (the base peak) in the mass spectrumis assigned a value of 100, and all of the other peaks are plotted in the massspectrum relative to that value.

RESOLVING POWER (Mass resolution) and MASS ACCURACY
Single ion method/FWHM method(FWHM - full with at half maximum)
RESOLVING POWER
The mass accuracy is the difference which is observed between
the theoretical mass and the measured mass.
∆m accuracy = mreal – mmeasured
It is often expressed in parts per million (ppm)
ppm = 106 * ∆m accuracy / mreal
i.e.: theoretical mass 1000; measured mass 999.9; error 100 ppm
MASS ACCURACY
