IntroductionWherever you travel in the Moravian-Silesian Region, you’ll be
welcomed by lovely mountains with specific genius loci . Windy
peaks, deep forests and small valleys with distinctive wooden
churches exude an air of harmony, but there are also numerous
ways to enjoy winter sports, cycle tourism and backpacking .
Of course nature holds no monopoly on beauty here . Like
exposed pearls, many exquisite towns are nestled in valleys
between hills or at the base of mountains, all boasting a long
history with remarkable structures and cultural monuments .
These include such places as the main provincial city of Opava,
Krnov, Hradec nad Moravicí or Štramberk .
Beyond the mountains the region’s spirit changes, as large
cities with rich industrial heritage thrive in the lowlands . To-
day you can choose from their bountiful offering of cultural
and artistic events of European importance, entertainment,
sports or dining establishments . Ostrava in particular has flou-
rished in recent years into a modern, colorful metropolis .
But you can find other uncommon experiences elsewhere
that may include staying at a spa, visiting a wellness center
or golfing . Just consider your options . Your travels may lead
you to Karviná, Český Těšín or Frýdek-Místek, or perhaps you’d
prefer touring some historical or technical monuments . The-
re are plenty of choices and you can’t go wrong . This region
straddling Moravia and Silesia always has some surprise wai-
ting close by . This relatively small area offers a concentration
of unusually colorful tourist attractions to satisfy practically
every visitor .

Here the most valuable natural treasures inclu-
de the Zlatohorská highlands and the Hrubý Je-
seník range with Moravia and Silesia’s highest
mountain, Praděd [great grandfather] . The vir-
gin landscape speaks a kind of calling for sports
and nature lovers, which they can’t help hearing:
“Come and explore my mysterious corners, ne-
ver-ending forests and points where the view is
astounding. Come on foot, by bicycle or in a hor-
se saddle, I’m lovely, diverse and healthy for you
all year round.” The Slezská Harta Dam attracts
those who enjoy windsurfing . Boaters find what
they’ve come for while navigating the rapids
of the Moravice or Opava River . When the local
peaks and ridges are covered in snow, an equally
appealing offer emerges…you could ski all sea-
son long and not hit every slope or ski trail . You’ll
enjoy restful moments at the spa Karlova Studán-
ka, on a ride along the Osoblaha narrow-gauge
railroad or on a visit to Sovinec castle . Don’t miss
visiting the historical and artistic monuments in
Krnov, Bruntál and Rýmařov .

Imagine rounded hills and peaks, endless forests,
wooden churches, sheep pastures and log cabins
evoking the atmosphere of centuries gone by . . .
all welcoming you to the Beskydy Mountains and
Moravian Wallachia . combine this with traditio-
nal hospitality, plum brandy (Slivovice), local cakes,
Štramberk gingerbread “ears”, dulcimer music and
colorful costumes at folk festivals, and you’ll unders-
tand why you came to experience the atmosphere
of this charming region . Explore the foothills by
bike, hike the summer mountains and experience
them on cross-country skis in the winter . Ski resorts
slightly outnumber horse farms here . Enjoy golfing
at such places as Čeladná or Ostravice and learn pa-
ragliding for example in Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem .
Selecting the right sport isn’t as difficult as planning
a trip to all of the area’s noteworthy monuments:
“I want to see Pustevny with its chalets Maměnka
and Libušín. And I want to see the Tatra trucks in
Kopřivnice and the Tube in Štramberk! We’ll also
go to see traditional wooden churches in Bílá, Praši-
vá Mountain or Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem.”

opavian Silesia
opavIan SILeSIaMoRavIan-SILeSIan RegIon FuLL oF expeRIenceS
As you descend from the Lower Jeseník Mountains,
a whole new land begins . The hilly, rugged region
changes into a lower highland that ultimately turns
into a large flat area . History and architecture are
appreciated first when visiting Opava, the former
center of the principality and all of Austrian Silesia .
Its oldest buildings include the grand co-cathedral
of the Assumption built in Silesian gothic style, and
the city watchtower, while a much newer work is
the department store Breda & Weinstein by re-
nowned architect Leopold Bauer . Opava’s dozens
of architectural treasures are representative of
the entire region . But don’t dawdle, or you’ll have
a hard time answering questions of the inquisitive
like: “What was that red and white chateau like
in Hradec nad Moravicí? How was that forest gar-
den in Nový Dvůr and that interesting Weisshuhn
Canal? And swimming in Hlučín Lake?” Be sure not
to miss seeing unique military history monuments –
the czechoslovak border fortification complexes in
Milostovice and Darkovičky and the Second World
War Memorial in Hrabyně .

The visage of Moravia and Silesia’s metropolis,
long seen as a coal mining and industrial city, is
changing rapidly . Some of yesterday’s mining and
smelting icons have become industrial monu-
ments, with fine examples like the Mining Muse-
um, the Lower Area of vítkovice and the Michal
Mine . You’ll find a bit less nature around Ostrava
than in other regions, but more options for other
activities await . One of the city’s social centers is
the famous Stodolní Street with dozens of restau-
rants, clubs, bars and more . cultured Ostrava also
features several theaters, galleries and many cul-
tural facilities . Monuments from various times are
mostly in the city center, including the medieval
church of St . Wenceslas, the Silesian Ostrava cast-
le, and several structures in historicist and functi-
onalist styles . You may also choose from visiting
a park with architectural miniatures, the Ostrava
Zoo, the Firefighting Museum or tasting delicious
frothy beer after touring local breweries . Don’t
miss taking in Ostrava’s panorama from the new
city Hall viewing Tower .

The Oder (Odra) River forms the regional axis and
lifeline, lending its name to the local Oderské Hills
and Protected Landscape Area Poodří . Two loca-
tions so close to each other represent two diverse
landscapes – while the river first rushes between
the hills, beyond the city of Odry it drains to the
plains creating a wondrous patchwork of dead ri-
ver branches, wetlands and ponds, a paradise for
water birds and ornithologist alike . And tourists
too! This is the Moravian gateway, historically cal-
led Moravské Kravařsko . There are a myriad diffe-
rent ways to go on the local cycle and hiking rou-
tes leading you to places unique and spectacular .
valley floodplains and rich flowering meadows
are great for relaxing and exploring . natural tre-
asures abound here, but manmade wonders are
all around too – admire rich architecture such as
the monument to J . A . comenius in Fulnek, the
Baroque chateau in Kunín, the Museum of the
Moravian Brethren in Suchdol nad Odrou, the
impressive chateau with wagon museum in Stu-

This landscape would best be described by the
word diversity . Its flat areas alternate with undu-

ridges running in, so hikers, cyclists and cross-
country skiers may choose precisely what they
want . Adrenaline-pumping rope climbing awaits
you in Mosty u Jablunkova, and there’s a golf
course in Ropice . Enjoy well-earned relaxation
in the Darkov Spa in Karviná and a unique di-
version at a park with prehistoric animal exhibit

exquisite monuments as chateau Fryštát or the
church of St . Peter of Alcantara in Karviná, cal-

churches in the mountains . And nature? Of all
lovely places, we must mention the unique Bes-
