Sunday of Christ The King
“His Kingship is founded upon the ineffable hypostatic
union. From this it follows that Christ is to be adored by
angels and men, but that to Him a man, angels and men are
subject and must recognize His empire; by reason of the
hypostatic union Christ has power over all creatures. But a
thought that must give us even greater joy and consolation is
that Christ is our King by acquired, as well by natural right,
for He is Our Redeemer.” (Pope Pus XI-1925)
In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the
King to remind Christians that their allegiance was to Jesus
Christ the true King and spiritual ruler in Heaven as
opposed to earthly supremacy. The rise and establishment of
Communism, Fascism, and Nazism controlled all aspects of
life of their subjects, treating them as commodities for the
glory of the state. The Party and man became God. Our
dignity and freedoms as human beings is not derived from any
King, the Supreme Court, Congress, or President, but from
God Himself who created us in His image and redeemed us
by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
At an Angelus audience on November 26, 2006, Pope
Emeritus Benedict XVI reminded the faithful that; “The Cross
is the throne from which He (Christ) demonstrated the sublime
regality of God-love. Christ’s Kingdom will be fully realized
on earth after all the enemies-and in the last instance,
death have been defeated.” Benedict reminded the faithful that
Christ’s Kingship is not based on human power, but on
“loving and serving others.”
In Byzantine tradition, Jesus is referred to as the
‘Pantocrator’, which means ‘the Ruler of all, the Sustainer of
the world’. In iconography, Christ Pantocrator is depicted in
the central dome of the church interior. His gaze is either stern
of a judge or one of compassion evoking mercy. In His left
hand He holds the Gospel Book, while His right hand is raised
in blessing or teaching. The book is a symbol of hope and
life, if we accept Christ and His message of salvation, or it
becomes a record of hopelessness and death if we refuse.
‘Your kingdom, O Christ our God, is not of this world, for
its beginning is in heaven; its end-is the knowledge of God
and eternal happiness; its King-the Ruler of the heavens; its
law-the divine will, supernaturally revealed; its reward-the
contemplation of God face to face. Therefore, although we are
in this world, let us not live for this world, but with faith in
Christ our God.’

Tuesday Night Faith Formation Sessions!
Classes are held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Josaphat Classroom.
The Bible and the Virgin Mary, part of
the St. Paul Center’s Journey Through
Scripture series, unveils the mystery of
Our Lady that is woven into the fabric of
Sacred Scripture. The twenty lessons convey
the beauty of the doctrine and devotions
surrounding Mary, bringing them to life in
a powerful, new way.
Based on Scott Hahn’s Hail, Holy Queen and presented
by dynamic speaker Matthew Leonard, this study has
something for everyone.
