Long exposure photography

Case Study: Long exposure photography (motion blur)

I like this picture because it capture a lot of subject ,which is a motorway. I like there is contrast between the white lights on the left side and the red lights on the right side of the image. The car lights have created the nice group of lights effects; the cars are going in opposite different directions on each side ,so the left side will have capture the white dipped headlights and the right side has captured the cars red tail lights.

The image has been create by changing the shutter speed of the camera. To create an image like this the shutter speed will have to be pretty slow, meaning that it is open for a longer length of time. The longer the shutter speed the more light will reach the sensor. The effect on the image has been created by exposing multiple moving cars for a long period of time.

This type of photography could work nicer if it has been used in darker conditions as the light will be more noticeable from the dark background. The sensor is likely to pick up light better in the dark because it will not have to compete with natural light.

I found this image on digital photo secrets site. They originally found this image on Flickr, by the user ‘TheG-Forcers’. The image was taken in Downtown Alanta,Georgia. The image has been taken from a height so it is a high angle image.

This image itself is an contemporary image because it has been taken recently (2011)using the traditional method of long exposure. This image has used traditional methods because long exposure has been used using film, more recently since digital cameras came out people have start to use them to capture long exposure shots.

This type of photography could be seen on social media as a experimental thing to show creativity to follow media users. However I could also seen this in a gallery because I could see people being interested in these type of images. You could capture a long exposure anywhere where there is life and light so I could imagine someone taking a long exposure image and it attracting attention.

Case Study: HDR photography

I really like this image. It looks like it is a type of landscape photography because it has captured a land scape of a lake and mountains. There is some contrast in the picture because the image almost looks fake, like it has been constructed in photo shop or something but at the same it shows a lot of nature like greens and blues.

I found this image on the smashing magazine website along with multiple other HDR images. This image has been taken by Maciek Duczynski ,in Norway. He posted the picture on Photo.net along with around another 100 pictures of his work.

This image has been created using the HDR (high dynamic range) technique .This technique almost merges illusion with reality. For this technique 3 (or more) images need to captured on different shutter speeds creating one bright exposed, one medium exposed and one dark exposed image; these images are merged together to create one final image with a mix of dark and light areas. The image will be taken on a tripod in the same place so they all fit together ,however, the only thing that will be different is the look of the image as timing of the shutter speed will affect how much light reaches the camera’s sensor. The purpose is to present a range of intensities from harsh bright sunlight to deep dark shadows in one image. This type of photography relies a lot on image processing software for the final image, as you need to put the different images together.

This image presents a range of different intensities. The left side the foreground and far right of the image is quite dark. The central middle ground and central back ground is bright. I think this image could have been created with 3 images or potentially more. The bright parts of this images will have been created by a overexposed image, which is produced when the shutter speed is slower like 1/4 because more light has reached the sensor. The medium (normal light) parts of this image have been created with an image using a ‘normal’ shutter speed setting like 1/30 (not too fast or too slow),which means just enough light has reached the sensor. The dark parts of the image h

This image is a contempory image because it has been created recently, in 2005. This uses non-traditional methods because it has to use image processing software within has been around 26 years which isn’t very long considering photography has been around since the 1800’s. In that time period image processing websites like photo shop weren't available as the technology isn’t as advanced as it is now.

Case Study: panoramic photography

This picture is an example of panoramic photography. I chose this photo because it is a vertical panoramic image-I’m used to seeing horizontal panoramic photography so it is a nice change seeing panoramic photography done this way.

I like the way this image looks abstractly; I love the way the camera is looking down and up at the time, creating contrast. The poles in the picture look bent but I assume in reality they aren’t and the camera angle may have altered the appearance of the image.

Panonamic images are good on covering the surroundings ,better than a normal picture. For example if this picture was not panoramic you would be able to cover the height this photographer has.Panoramic image can be creating using panoramic mode on a camera. You need take say about 25 images and make sure they over lap by at least 15 percent,

Despite the work being visually interesting, I feel like its quite hard to see the detail in the image looking from a far or unless the picture was enlarged. I think this is because the image covers a large part of the environment.

I opened my image in photo shop and the first thing I did was crop because I wanted to get the light in the centre of the image. I started to alter the levels of the image to make the image sharper. Then I adjusted the brightness and contrast of the image to make the light stand out from background more. After I turned the image black and white because the bright lights are more powerful when the back ground is grey and black. Finally I added an a blue layer to the image to give a cool tone to the image and bit of colour to the image.

I like that this image provides some symmetry because the lines are on both sides. The lights in the image are centre so they are the main focus of the image.

I think this image may appeal to a someone who like images which conveys a mysterious mood or likes contrast.

Seen as the image doesn’t look focused ,if I were taking the picture again I would make the picture is focused. I think this was because I had an nd filter on the lens of the camera so may of twisted the focal ring instead of the nd filter.

I like how you can a few light trails in different colours- green, orange and white from the cars lights and traffic lights.

I feel like I have made the image better because the colours have been enhanced.

A photographer normally uses more than one type of light to create an image or the image would ‘look really odd and flat’.When creating these images a photographer should use a dimmable flashlight with an adjustable beam, as this will create the best results , according to improvephotography.com .

Long exposure can create noise in light painting photography. In light painting photography more than one picture will be taken ,some images can require dozens of photos.

You can mix in ambient light to make the photo look more natural, like the light from moon or street lights. The camera will only pick up light so its best to wear clothing and not let light shine on you. If you stick to this, it shouldn't’t be a problem if you move through the scene to paint in details or adjusting things.

Investigation #13d photography (also known as stereoscopic photography) is capturing two slightly offset images to create a three dimensional images. There is a principle called stereopsis ,which makes the 3D effect work. Each eye is located in a different place therefore is sees a slightly different image. You can perceive depth from the difference in the images. This effect can

Equipment needed is a camera and tripod. You need to place the tripod on a flat surface so you get a still image. Take the picture with your subject in the center of the frame. After the first picture has been taken ,slide the tripod 2.5 inches (63mm) to the right or the left. Take the second picture in the this (the new) position.

To create a 3d image two photos will need to taken from different horizontal positions. This methods can be created in few different ways. One way to have two cameras positioned side by side from each other, another is to have one camera and horizontal position is changed between the two exposures and the other one is to have a stereo camera with two lenses side by side.

Mood board

What types of experimental photography will you produce? What are your subjects?

I am going to produce reflective photography images. This means I need to capture reflections in my photography. The subjects which I could incorporate in my photography are puddles, windows, mirrors, bubbles, sunglasses, glass and river- basically anything reflective surface or has water in it.

What techniques will be required?

I think my reflective photography will be a mix of observational and controlled photography. Some of the images will be observational because I won’t be able to alter what is in the scene, for example I may take an image of the river or a puddle. Some of the images will be controlled because I may need to place objects within a scene to capture a reflection, for example I could place mirror sunglasses on grass to reflect the scene. I could create symmetry in my images especially with photography water, like lakes and rivers. To reduce ripples on water I can use long exposure, this creates a nice textured water colour effect on the water.

Proposal

What equipment is required?

DSLR camera to take the images. I could need a tripod to produce straight images especially when photographing landscapes of something like rivers. I may need to use props like sunglasses, bubble blower, glasses (wine) to creative a reflection. I think I will need an ND filter because this will balance out the images, especially when photographing water.

Developments (Shoot #1)

Firstly I changed the levels of the image in Photoshop. I moved the middle marker so the outside of the image would get darker but the center of the image would stay bright. I wanted to the reflection to be the focus of the image so I think the darkness makes the light within the reflection look brighter.

After I altered the levels, I decided to adjust the curves of the image. I wanted to further darken the edges of the image. I increased the output and input of the image; I increased the output to 29 and the input to 58. This made to edges surrounding the images much darker to create contrast with the brightness in the image. The image was a bit grey originally but the curves have made it black, which I think looks much better.

Shoot #1

Shoot #1 - AnalysisI have enhanced the shadows within the image, using curves and levels. I think the darker shadows has created a nice contrast between the dark and light parts of the image. I used reflections within the image. There was a puddle present of the pavement so I decided to photograph the clouds reflection within it. After I took a few image the sun caught the puddle which looked really nice. I think levels and curves have also increased the texture within the image. Texture was already present in original image but these adjustments have enhanced it. The tone of image is dark in most areas but the image has image has a yellow tone in the reflection. There is contrast present between the light of the sun in the reflection and the shadows in the left and fore ground of the image.I feel the image would have looked better if someone was walking near puddle to create a reflection of themselves within it. Maybe the image could have been cropped on the left to make the pole in the reflection more center aligned, but I think this would crop out some of the shadows which I think look good. To enhance the texture of image I could of sharpen the image ,this will texturize the road.

Developments (Shoot #2)

Firstly I changed the levels of the image in Photoshop. I moved the marker to make the higher parts of the reflection brighter and the lower parts of the reflection darker. Then I used curves to make the a white cast over the image to give it a retro look. After I though it would be a good idea to cut out the reflection with the lasso tool so I can make the background black and white.

I went around each lenses individually with the polygonal lasso tool and layer via copied them on to separate layers. After that I clicked back on my image and changed the image to black and white. Then I made sure the coloured lenses were above the black and white image, so that the colour would be visible. I want to create contrast between the background and the actual reflection.

Shoot #2

Shoot #2 - AnalysisI think that I have made the reflection in the image more vibrant and stand out more because of making the background black and white. I like how blues and greens catch your eye when it is against the dull black and white. It is clear that the main focus of the image is the sunglasses; firstly they are much brighter than the rest of the image and secondly they are composed to the centre of the image. I feel that texture is visible in my image because the background looks a bit rough. I think this was created by the using levels and curves because it has created a little shadows within the image. There is a mixture of the colour and black and white in the image which makes the colour on the page be the focus of the page. Also the using colour and black and white in the image creates contrast in the image. The colour of the reflection is very vibrant in comparison to the dull background.I think could of the laid the glasses horizontally to create symmetry but this would affect the reflection within the glasses. Personally im not sure I could of done much more in the editing of the picture but I could see if the image looks better with the brightness increased.

Shoot #3

Shoot #3 - Analysis

To create this image I had to develop it quite a lot. I think I've made the image look more vibrant than the other picture using the vibrance tool and colour balance; I feel like ive enhanced the blues and greens in the image.I have used the technique of reflections this is my theme. Due to my enhancing of the cyan blue shadows and blue mid tones of the picture, I feel like this picture displays a cool tone. I would say the image shows contrast because the shadows are very dark compared to the brightness in the river. There are reflections in the river so there is also symmetry present in the picture; the bushes are symmetrical on the river.

Developments (Shoot #3)

Firstly, I cropped left and right side of the picture because I wanted the four bushes their reflection to be more of a focal point. Then I increased the brightness to 50 to make the image brighter because it look pretty dark and dull. I changed the photo to black and white and enhanced the cyans, greens and yellows within the image. I feel that the black and white effect has made the effect stand out than the coloured image.

After I auto toned the picture as this increased the light parts in the image. I used the the curves tool because I thought it would enhanced the photo-especially the shadows within it .I think it the image has given the image more depth.

Shoot #3

Shoot #3 - Analysis

I feel like I made made the reflection the main focus of the image by cropping and making the picture black and white. The original image was very dark and wide so the cropping allowed me to have the reflection in the center and get rid of the black parts of the picture. I like the levels, curves along with the

Contact Sheets (Shoot #3)

Developments (Shoot #3)

Cropped the top and bottom, left and right to make the subject and the reflection the centre. I increased the vibrance to 50+ and 20+ saturation to enhance the colours in the image. Then I straightened the image with the rotation tool ,clockwise.I straighten this image because the horizon was unbalance therefore I wanted to straighten it.

I then Colour balanced the image.I set the Shadows 25 blue, the Midtones 20 green,Highlights yellow -20 and green +20.I used the Dodge tool to brighten up my brothers reflection because I wanted it to stand out more.I used the Selecion tool and layer via copy to neaten my brothers hair.

Shoot #3

Shoot #3 - Analysis

I feel like I have made the image more vibrant and made the subject (my brother) and his reflection the central focus of the image. The main tools I used to do this were the color tools, where I altered the shadows, mid tones and highlights, and the crop tool, which altered the composition of the image.

The colour of the image is bright and vibrant because I increased the vibrance and altered the colours in the colour balance. Even though it doesn’t make the image look very natural but it looks more eye catching. There is symmetry within the image because my brother has been reflected in the water, which looks really nice.I like the way the image is balanced because my brother is in the centre of the picture.

To improve the image id make it look more natural and id would try not cropping the image to see if that would make the image look better or enhance the reflections.

Contact Sheets (Shoot #3)

Developments (Shoot #3)

I made a Crop on the right side of the image to delete part of the tree I didn’t want there.I altered the Levels make the centre of the image brighter. Then, I Turned up the vibrance and saturation (25 and 10) to enhanced the colour of the image. I duplicated the image so I had two layers of the same image.I used the Dodge tool on the duplicated image to brighten the reflection.

I also I used to Dodge to brighten up the white writing on the boat sign,to make it more noticeable.I changed the opacity of the duplicated layer to 45% percent to make it more natural.I then used Polygon lasso tool to cut out the sign. I turned this part a darker red and turned down the opacity.

Shoot #3

Shoot #3 - Analysis

I have made the reflection in the image more brighter therefore it makes this part of the image more visible to the audience. The theme of my project was reflections so I thought that it was important that the reflection stood out; when I compare the this image to the original image, the reflection looks better because looks brighter.

Another positive difference of the editing is that the boat sign has been enhanced; it appears redder and the writing appears whiter. I like how this part of the image looks because it makes the image has a sense of location and meaning as Boats in York will travel up this river.

To improve the image I would adjust the image anti cockwise to straight the line of house, however I would have to see how this would effect the image as a whole; I don’t want this to crop out elements of the image.

Also I would like to see what else I could do to the sky. It has a nice yellow tint however I could make it appear more vibrant by using the vibrance filter and colour balance.

Development

Modification

Image 1: I opened my image back into photoshop to modify it slightly. When I opened the image in photoshop, I decided to rotate the image to the right; this meant the glasses would be horizontal instead of vertical in the image. Then I decided to crop the image to make the sunglasses and their reflection more central. I feel like the modification improved the image because it made the sunglasses jump out of the image therefore making the image more eye catching.Image 2: I decided the image looked a bit dull and looked a bit flat, so re edited from scratch. I decided to separate the top part of the image from the bottom part of the image, using the polygonal lasso tool. I did this so I could edit the sky without editing the rest of the image. I altered the levels of the sky so it would stand out more in the image. Then I altered the levels of the original image to match the levels of the sky layer. To match the sky colour put a a slight blue layer of colour balance on the original image. Then I wasn’t sure what to do it so I decided to experiment with different edits,so I create 5 others versions. I had a cropped version, a black and white version, a bright purple versions, a mid purple version and lighter purple version. I decided that the black and white version was the best ,despite saying the picture need some colour.I picked this edit because I realised that the detail I added in the picture wasn’t removed by the black and white effect. The black and white also made the image look smart.

I didn’t carry out experiments on a specific technique but I wish I had photographed more subjects and re-shooted more images so I could compare different images.

Development

Creating ImagesThe develop has helped me because I have reviewed my work and picked what I like and dislike about the image, so I could then improve what I didn’t like. I feel like i could of made more use of the time we had,to take more images.

I felt post production was really useful in my project because it allowed me to make parts of an image stand out more and let me have freedom to present image to audience, in any way I wanted to. The post production was really important because I helped me enhance any image I had taken. For example I kept the colour in the sunglasses’ lenses and turn the background black and white so the reflection would grab the audiences attention; I wouldn’t of been able to do that if it wasn’t for post-production. The unedited image looked okay but there wasn’t anything special about it. The contrast, created by cutting out the lenses, between the black and white background and the coloured lenses of the glasses made the photo eye catching.

EvaluationReflection

I feel like I tried to try the project out professionally but I didn’t plan everything as well as I should of. I think I did develop some ideas by working with different subjects, which helped me decide what would look best. I photographed reflection in water ,like puddles and rivers ,and mirror reflections ,like sunglasses. Even though I photographed a couple of different subjects, I wish that I explored more reflections like normal mirror reflections and reflections in buildings. I feel like some of my images look professional like the sunglasses picture and the river pictures; they look clear and eye catching.

Evaluation

Conclusion

Overall I am happy with the images I have taken because they will be recognisable as part of my reflections theme. In each of my images I have edited I have tried to make the reflection the focal point.
