Independence Day
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Independence day is sometimes called The
Fourth of July (July 4)-
It is one of the most important celebrations in
the USA.
It commemorates the day the United States
proclaimed its freedom from Britain with the
Declaration of Independence in 1776.
THE HISTORY OF INDEPENDE DAY
During the 17th and the 18th centuries, many
people sailed from England to America and
started new life there.
New homes were called colonies.
The King of England was still the king of the
people in colonies, so they had to send money
(taxes) to England every year.
THE HISTORY OF INDEPENDE DAY
However, in 1770s´ thirteen American colonies
wanted to be free from England.
They wanted their government to be in
America, not in England.
They did not want to pay taxes to the King who
was in England.
In 1773 there was the famous Boston Tea
Party.
BOSTON TEA PARTY
In 1773 there was a fight about paying taxes
on tea in Boston.
Some settlers, dressed up like Native
Americans got on a tea-ship which brought tea
from India.
340 boxes of tea were thrown into the sea as a
protest against taxes on tea.
King George III became very angry.
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
On 4 July 1776, Thomas Jefferson and his
friends wrote the Declaration of Independence
in Philadelphia.
The original 13 colonies proclaimed
independence of England.
The War of Independence lasted till 1783.
In 1783 both sides recognized the
independence and the USA was born.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
The first Fourth of July celebration took placein Philadephia in 1777.
The ships fired their guns and there was a lot of noise.
Now, on 4 July Americans celebrateIndependence Day.
There are special church servises, but most people celebrate outside because it issummer.
HOW AMERICANS CELEBRATE?
Most Americans have barbecues and picnics,
eat, and play games outside, typically in the
parks or gardens.
At night Americans watch fireworks.
American flags (sometimes with the original 13
stars - colonies) are everywhere.
In many towns, there are parades with loud
music and bright colours.
