The USA covers more than 9,5 million square kilometers. It is the fourth largest state (we think area – rozloha) in the world after Russia, Canada and China.

The USA borders on (sousedí s) two states: Canada in the north and Mexico in the south. In the west there is the Pacific Ocean and in the east border on the Atlantic Ocean.

The United States of America is federal state with 50 states, 48 are together and Alaska with Hawaii are situated out of them. Alaska is on the northern part of the continent and it borders on Canada and Russia. The Hawaii is 3000 km southwest of California.

There is also one district, District of Columbia – so this territory is not state, it is the area of the capital city Washington.

CLIMATECLIMATE The USA lies in the moderate ( = temperate- mírné) climate

zone and the climate is determinated by ocean. Only in central part there is mostly a continental climate with great temperature differences between summer and winter or day and night. There are too differences between east cost with more rainy weather and west coast with dry and hot weather and soft winters.

The Atlantic PlainThe Atlantic Plain lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the foothills (úpatí) of the Appalachians.

Another part of the Coastal Plain is the Gulf Plainthe Gulf Plain which lies along the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Plain has large deposits of petroleum. New Orleans and Houston are major cities in the Gulf Plain.

Between the Rocky Mountains in theWest and the Appalachians in the East there is a large plain (prérie) area called the Interior Plainsthe Interior Plains (has got 2 parts: the Great Plains, the Central Plains).

The dry, western part of the Interior Plains is called thethe Great PlainsGreat Plains (Velké prérie).This treeless plateau (rovina, planina, plošina) gently rises from the Central Plains to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

The eastern part is called Central PlainsCentral Plains.This area is the agricultural heartland of the United States. E. g. Chicago, St. Louis and Dallas are in the Central Plains.
