Understanding RigidCore & The CategoricalDifferences

Under the Umbrella of Rigid CoreRigid core is the newest category of resilient flooring and it covers a multitude of flooring constructions that are not all created equal.Rigid core flooring was introduced in 2012 by several manufacturers and was recognized as its own category in 2017 by ASTM. Rigid core ASTM F-3261 is defined as resilient flooring in modular format with a rigid polymeric core.

What this means, among other things and according to ASTM F-3261 3.1.6, is that the flooring is a resilient product with sufficient enough stiffness to bridge minor sub floor irregularities, and sufficient stiffness that it takes significant effort to deflect the product when supported between two fixed supports.

Attributes of rigid core include superior dimensional stabilitywhen subject to heat variances, strong indentation resistanceand a waterproof core. Today, the rigid core market includes SPC, WPC and certain unproven non-PVC hard surfaces. All three constructions meet the standards for rigid core, but there are inherent differences in the construction, design and performance, as well as differences by product and by company.

All Rigid Core is Not Equal

The Core DifferenceThe biggest difference between WPC, SPC and VyLuxe™ Madera SPC is found in both the composition and manufacturing of the core.

I. Composition VyLuxe™ Madera SPC offers the highest PVC Content of SPC options, while LVT, WPC and other thicker rigid cores are typically made with limestone filler. There is not a lot of structural integrity in dirt. Dirt renders the core, and thereby the locking system, more brittle. VyLuxe™ Madera SPC’s high concentration of PVC increases the product density. The result is a stronger, more dimensionally stable floor with a stronger lock.

II. All the Density, None of the FluffDensity is also affected in the manufacturing process. The core of WPC is air fluffed. Fluffing increases product thickness with less raw material. This

is a cost savings in the manufacturing process, but it sacrifices product density. VyLuxe™ Madera SPC is all product, no fluff! The difference in density is immediately evidenced in a rudimentary weight comparison between the products.

It’s Good to be DenseThe density of a floor has a direct correlation to the product’s dimensional stability, and dimensional stability affects a floor’s performance. For example, when flooring is subject to large variances in temperature, such that may occur in a ski cabin or a summer business closed for the season, expansion and contraction can happen, causing the floor to buckle, cup or separate. The greater the density, the less dimensional change.

VyLuxe™ Madera SPC offers the greatest density on the market today and its superior density equates to superior temperature and superior water resistance. VyLuxe™ Madera SPC maintains its dimension without expanding, contracting, cupping, curling or peeling, in the harshest of conditions.

In installation, greater density allows for additional forgiveness when it comes to subfloor irregularities. VyLuxe™ Madera SPC requires fewer transitions, little to no acclimation and the fully licensed drop-lock edge profile contributes to an overall faster installation time.

Putting it TogetherAnother difference in the WPC product; WPC is manufactured in stages.First, the core is made, cooled and chopped. Next, the vinyl layer is made cooled and chopped. Then, the film layer is added, and finally, a wear layer. All four finished layers are pressed together and the profile for the locking system is routed.

VyLuxe™ Madera SPC is created in a singular pass. As the core is extruded from the machine, the film and wear layer are pressed onto the hot product at once, and then the lock is routed. The resulting effect of this process is a superior indentation resistance over WPC.

Life is Better Uncorked! Many of the rigid core flooring products are sold with an attachedbacking for comfort underfoot and reduction in sound transmission. The most popular of the attached pads are cork , a curious choice!Cork is neither water-resistant, nor is it dimensionally stable, so its inclusion mitigates any claim to water-resistant and stability that a product might have.

VyLuxe™ Madera SPC is made with an IXPE pad. This premium waterproof underlayment provides both comfort underfoot and superior sound reduction. The entire product is stable and waterproof - not just the core.

Solid Rigid CoreFeatures and Differentiators

VyLuxe™ Madera SPC boasts a significantly high concentration of vinyl in its composition. The result is greater density and rigidity of the flooring. As such, VyLuxe™ Madera SPC offers some unique features and benefits that may be preferred in some installations over other resilient flooring types.

100% Waterproof CoreThe solid, homogeneous, unlayered core is 100% waterproof.

Impact and Damage ResistantThe rigidity of VyLuxe™ Madera SPC renders the flooring significantly more resistant to indentation and static loads.

Exceptional Dimensional Stability in Variant Light and TemperaturesMonarch and Sovereign’s exceptional heat and light resistance allows for installations in direct sunlight and no need for acclimation during installation in moderate temperature zones.

Resistant to PeelingResistant to peeling or delamination, the solid design of VyLuxe™ Madera SPC increases the overall strength ofthe product.

Offers attributes that favor a fast, easy, “foolproof” installationIncluding accurate profiling and squareness , a superior locking system (angle/angle, angle/drop) and rigidity that facilitates the locking-action in click installation.

Requires fewer transitionsVyLuxe™ Madera SPC only requires transitions every4000 ft2 or 60 linear feet.

Significantly reduces telegraphingVyLuxe™ Madera SPC reduces visible telegraphing and makes it possible to install flooring over existing floors including, but not limited to, ceramic, cement and planks.

IXPE acoustic underlayment is:Made of waterproof polyethylene. The IXPE pad is mildew and mold resistant 100% recyclable and odor-free.

Before starting installation, it is important you read all instructions and warranty information. By starting installation of this product you are agreeing that you have read and understand all installer/owner’s requirements and responsibilities and are aware that deviating from the instructions and recommendations in this installation guide may result in voiding the product warranty.

SPC flooring is a floating floor and should NOT be secured to the floor. Do not install fixed objects, such as cabinets, on top of the flooring or fasten molding pieces directly to the floor.

It is the sole responsibility of the installer/owner, prior to installation, to assure that the planned installation area is suitable for the flooring and meets local building codes. Confirm that all subflooring meets or exceeds all industry standards/local building codes, as well as the recommendations listed herein. The manufacturer accepts no responsibility for product failure extending from or related to failure to meet job environment and subflooring requirements.

The installer/owner assumes full responsibility for the final inspection of this product. Inspection should be done prior to installation and should include: print/color/texture, factory finish and locking system. If the product is not acceptable, DO NOT INSTALL IT. Contact your supplier for assistance immediately. Flooring that has been installed will be deemed to have been inspected and quality accepted. We will not accept any responsibility for any flooring installed with visible defects.

SPC is rated for indoor use only. The area must remain climate controlled (65°F – 85°F) for the life of the floor. Do not install outdoors.

If SPC flooring is installed in a sun room, avoid peak hours of sunlight by closing blinds, shades or drapes.

Rigid Plank flooring is waterproof, but is not a moisture barrier. It is suggested a moisture barrier is used when installing over newer concrete or a wooden subfloor. However, water leaking over or around the outer edges of the flooring can damage a wood subfloor. This is not considered a defect in the flooring.

Subfloor Requirements and Preparation:All sub-floors must be clean, flat (smooth) and dry prior to installation. Sweep or vacuum your subfloor immediately prior to installation ensuring there is no debris or grit, as it may interfere with installation.

All subfloors must be flat, high or low areas exceeding 3/16” in a 10’ span must be corrected.

You can trim doorframes by turning a panel upside down to use as a height guide. Using a handsaw or jamb saw, cut door frames to the necessary height so that planks slide easily under them.

Wood Subfloors: Must be a minimum of 3/4” CDX Plywood, OSB, or APA approved plywood. Sand down high areas and fill low areas with a Portland based patching compound. To avoid squeaking, nail or screw the floor every 6”. Repair or replace any damaged sheathing.

Concrete Subfloors: Must be fully cured (at least 60 days old), flat (smooth), and leveled prior to starting the installation. Grind down any high areas and fill any low areas with a Portland-based patching

compound. Moisture arising from new or old concrete can create high levels of moisture vapor emissions, hydrostatic pressure and high levels of alkalinity. This combination is highly corrosive and will damage the floor over time. To avoid this problem, a calcium chloride test and PH level test must be performed prior to installation. If the level of vapor emissions / hydrostatic pressure exceeds 8lbs and /or the alkalinity level is 9 or higher, a moisture barrier must be installed over the concrete.

Radiant Heated Systems: The Hydronic or Embedded radiant heating system needs to be operational and working for one week prior to install date to reduce any residual moisture. Three days prior to install lower the temperature to 65°F. Twenty-four hours after the installation has been completed, the temperature can be gradually increased 5° increments. Temperature must never exceed 85°F. It is the responsibility of installer/owner to confirm the suitability of the radiant heating system for use with this product. Any damage to the floor caused by the radiant heating system will not be covered by the product warranty.

SPC flooring can be installed over existing non-cushioned resilient flooring, ceramic tile, and existing wood floors as long as the floors are clean, level, and well-bonded to the sub-floor. Do not sand existing resilient floors as they may contain asbestos.

Do not install SPC over existing carpet. This will void the warranty.

Do not install SPC flooring over soft, rough, non-flat or uneven surfaces.

TOOLS AND SUPPLIES REQUIRED:Safety glasses, straight edge or T-square, framing square, chalk-line, tape measure, ¼” spacers, pry-bar, rubber mallet, tapping block, table saw, guillotine tile cutter, compound/miter saw, jigsaw or hand saw or jamb saw, utility knife

Installing Rigid Core Flooring:1. Installation should begin in a corner (left side of room) and proceed from the wall with the tongue facing toward the wall (Figure 1). Allow a minimum gap of ¼” for subfloor movement or product expansion.

2. When laying the first row in a straight line interlock the short ends by inserting the tongue into the grooves at an angle of about 15 to 20 degrees. Install each sequential plank on the short end (12”) and be sure to line up evenly. It is of great significance for a wonderful installation.

3. Make sure to keep the seams between planks tight. You will feel and hear the click when locking the planks together to create a tight seam. There should be no gap visible between planks. If your seam appears not to be tight, you should immediately pull apart the planks and reassemble it. Slowly lift the top plank away from the bottom plank and simply reinsert it —repeating Step #2.

4. When installing SPC flooring, it is strongly suggested to stagger the rows so that the short edge seams are not in a straight uniform line. We advise staggering rows (Figure 2) at minimum 8” from the previous end joint.

5a. Angle/Angle: To start the second row. Interlock the first plank tightly against the first row (long side) again at a 15-20 degree angle. The next plank, interlock the short side first, leaving it slightly away from the long side and then lift the row at an angle and slide and lock into the long side of previous row.

Continue for additional rows.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When cutting SPC flooring for length, be sure to always cut the short side of the plank with the groove edge. The remaining piece can then be used on the opposite side of the room, at the end of that row (Figure 3) if the layout permits.

6. Start the third row with the plank cut to appropriate length. Again the remaining piece can be used at the opposite end of the row, if the layout of the room permits.

7. Continue this pattern for the remainder of the rows to be installed. Always place the cut end of the first plank against the wall (Figure 4).

8. Fitting around irregular objects or door jams. Installation under moldings (such as door jambs) may require that the top lip of the groove on the end be reduced in size. Using a small plane or knife plane, carefully shave off the ledge of the groove. After the groove ledge has been trimmed, place the board in place and tighten with a pull bar. The installer must be sure that the required expansion gap has been maintained and the flooring is not pinched. If fit is not correct, re-trim as necessary. Place a bead of wood glue on the bottom lip of the groove. Insert the tongue into the groove and engage with a pull bar. Hold the board in place with painter’s tape until the glue is dry. Do not use masking tape or duct tape as they may damage the floors finish. Be sure to keep some extra SPC flooring in case there is an unforeseen need for replacement.

CARE &MAINTENANCE GUIDE:You have just installed Vinyl flooring. Your new resilient floor was produced under the highest quality standards and will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment. Although SPC flooring is one of the easiest floors to maintain, please follow the recommendations in this guide to retain the fresh look and protect the factory finish. After installing the floor, we recommend a first cleaning to remove any loose dirt or debris that may have been introduced during the installation process. Please check any new cleaning agents on a small test patch of the floor in an inconspicuous area, and avoid using harsh cleaners or alcohol or ammonia-based cleaning products.

1. First sweep and vacuum the floor surface to ensure removal of all loose dust, dirt, and debris. Using a mop (or, for large areas, a floor cleaning machine with a low Using warm, clean water, rinse several times or as needed, then use a dry mop or wet vacuum to remove the water and allow drying.

2. Do not allow pets with unclipped nails to damage your SPC flooring. It may result in severe scratching to the surface. Replace furniture glides and round-headed hard plastic glides with floor protectors made of non-staining felt on furniture legs. The same is true for any high heeled shoes that do not have proper tips on the heels which are not covered by the warranty.

3. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. During peak sunlight hours, use drapes or blinds to minimize the direct sunlight on the SPC flooring. Most types of PVC based flooring will be affected by continuous strong sunlight. To avoid an uneven appearance, please consider relocations of any area rugs from time to time. Long term continuous inside temperatures over 95 F degrees combined with strong direct sunlight could cause thermal degradation.

4. Always sweep or vacuum your SPC flooring before cleaning so that all loose dirt and particles are removed. Some hand wiping may be required to remove tough spots and spills. . For best results do not use combination cleaner/finish products.

5. DO NOT WAX YOUR SPC FLOOR! The surface of your floor is very dense and non¬porous, which prevents wax from penetrating and thus builds up a bed for yellowing and dirt collection. The same non-porous feature also provides all the protection against wear and staining that you will need.

6. If your floor has been exposed to excessive amounts of water due to flooding, do not panic. SPC flooring is waterproof! Simply remove the water as quickly as possible. A dehumidifier should be promptly turned on in the room to reduce the moisture levels back to normal. Do not dry the room below the normal moisture level that existed previously.
