Island La Digue
About 1500 km east of Mombasa, Africa, you will reach a group of 115 islands, which are poetically called “A Hidden Treasure”, “A Pearle Of The Indian Ocean”, “A Garden of Eden”, or simply “The Seychelles.
Location
The islands were originally uninhabited but later Maldivian and Arab marines and traders as well as pirates landed on the amazing shoreline.
During the Napoleonic wars, France ruled the archipelago but in 1812 the islands became a colony of the Kingdom of England. In the process of decolonization the Seychelles gained their independence from Great Britain in 1976 and became a free member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The symbolic Head of the Commonwealth is Elisabeth II but the real state representative is the President.

Due to historical circumstances and multi-ethnic roots (African, French, Indian, Chinese and British) official languages are French, English and Seychellois Creole. (Creole languages are usually a mixture of African dialects, French, English and Spanish – depending on location).
The capital city is called Victoria and is situated on the island Mahé with a population of 80,000 people. (All of the Seychelles have 94,000 inhabitants.)
Languages and Demography
The capital of Victoria, SeychellesPeople in the Market Street,
Mahé, the largest island, is 27 km long and 8 km wide. Praslin is the second largest island of the Seychelles
and its territory went on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
The island La Digue takes the third position. These three are granite islands but the others are mostly coral.
Vegetation on the islands have a tropical character all year round thanks to its rich water sources and high humidity.
From November to April the islands get monsoon rains and the temperature falls to 23°C.

PRASLIN – UNESCO Heritage Natural Site
The Seychelles are considered to be a living museum of natural history and science. Local environmental legislation is very strict as the Seychelles are home to many endemic species and the fauna and flora eco-system is very fragile. Nowhere else in the world will you see coco-de-mer, the largest fruit and seed of all, also called a nut-of-love; the jellyfish tree, with only eight surviving examples, the giant tortoises and Seychelles Black Parrot – the national bird of the country.

About 50% of the population have a home telephone.
About 20 years ago, there were only 2 kilometres of asphalt roads and one non-working traffic light in Victoria, Mahé Island.
