There are 28 member countries in the EU.

1951
The Coal and Steel Community was
established by 6 countries: 1 France, 2 Germany, 3 Italy, 4 Belgium, 5 Netherlands, 6 Luxembourgh (Benelux)
That was the start
of European economic cooperation.
1951 ---- 1995
During the 1960s (nineteen
sixties), 1970s and 1980s
other European countries
were gradudally joining it.
The community changed its name into the EU in 1993.

There were 15 member states in the European Union in 1995.
The EU in 2004
10 “new countries“ joined the EU, including the Czech Republic
They were 8 former communist countries (Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia and the CR) plus Malta and Cyprus.
2007
Two new countries joined the EU in 2007.
They were Romania
and Bulgaria so there were,
27 member countries
in the EU.
2013
Croatia became a member state of the EU in 2013. The total number of the EU member countries is 28.
Brussels
• The seat of European Parliament is in Brussels, Belgium.
Advantages of being an EU member state
Every EU citizen has the right • to stay in any EU country (no need to ask for a visa into any EU country) • to travel (no need to show your passport within the EU, an ID card is enough) • to work (no need to ask for a work permit)
Students may study at any university of the EU.
Drivers may use their driving licence in any EU country.
Currency
• The common currency of the EU is the Euro.
• It was introduced in 2002 in coins and banknotes.
• Over a half of the member countries are using it today.

• The EU came into existence in 1951.
• It was called Coal and Steel Community.
• There were 6 countries in the beginning and there are 28 now.
• The CR joined the EU in 2004 together with 9 other countries.
• Yes, there is. It is Euro.
• Yes, there are a lot of them (see picture 10).
