Belle the DogOn 17th August, San Diego emergency services answered a call from Kevin Weaver’s phone and because they could only hear a dog at the end of the line, they hurried to his house. There they found the man lying unconscious1 on the floor so they quickly took him to the hospital. Belle – Kevin’s dog, which was trained to recognise diabetic shocks – called the ambulance with its owner’s mobile. The dog used its teeth to press the number nine key, which was programmed by Kevin’s daughter as a 911 call to emergency services. When Kevin felt a little bit better, his daughter took Belle to see him in the hospital. The dog ran to its master as soon as it saw him there, and both of them were happy to see each other again. The dog is the first animal that has won the Vita Wireless Award – the award for individuals who used their mobile phones to save lives.

Mysterious touristsCoaches full of tourists appeared in Kidlington about three weeks ago. At first, locals had no idea why their village, where the only attraction is a medieval church, had become such a tourist magnet. It’s true that the church appeared in a TV episode of Midsomer Murders but the tourists seemed to ignore it and were interested only in taking pictures of the locals and their semi-detached houses. Thanks to this, many people thought that it was a social study done by students at Oxford University, five miles away. Others suggested that the tourists could just be mistaking Kidlington for Kirtlington, which is nearby. However, the real reason for their sudden appearance in the village was not so mysterious – Kidlington is simply being marketed by Chinese tourist agencies as a traditional English village, which it certainly is. Many of the Chinese tourists live in big cities and love to see flowers in people’s gardens, and Kidlington is certainly a very well-kept area.

(www.bbc.com, www.independent.co.uk; upraveno)

26 Why did the Chinese tourists visit Kidlington?

A) They visited it by mistake.B) They were part of a social study.C) They wanted to see filming locations there.D) They wanted to see a typical English village.

Disappearing Ice Helps ArchaeologistsDisappearing glaciers1 are exciting for archaeologists because interesting things can be discovered once the ice has gone. Probably the best-known example is Ötzi, a prehistoric man who lived at the foot of the Italian Alps 5,300 years ago. In the mountains of Norway, archaeologists made another interesting discovery: a pre-Viking woollen long-sleeved shirt. This piece of clothing, made there around 300 AD, was found on the road where tradesmen transported goods to market. Only a few similar shirts from that time have survived. One puzzle is why anyone would take off a warm long-sleeved shirt in icy weather and leave it on the road. Maybe the owner was suffering from hypothermia, a problem which makes people take off clothing because they wrongly feel hot when it is actually freezing cold.

(www.news.discovery.com, upraveno)1 glacier: ledovec

27 What does the article say about the long-sleeved shirt?

A) It was left on the trade route.B) It was found in the Italian Alps.C) It was made in Norway 5,300 years ago.D) It was the only long-sleeved shirt found from the pre-Viking age.

British FoodWhat comes to your mind when you think of British food? Probably just fish and chips. But is British food really that boring? Fortunately, this reputation has recently changed, and Britain is producing more and more top-class chefs who not only prepare excellent meals in restaurants, but also dominate television screens with their recipes. It is thanks to these famous TV cooks and their television shows, and surprisingly not any advertising events, that the British are becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is obvious that famous cooks have the power to bring cooking to a higher level. They influence what British people eat in restaurants although their TV shows still haven’t influenced the number of British eating out. The tradition of families dining together will be hard to break for anybody.

(www.bbc.co.uk, upraveno)

28 What is the main idea of this article?

A) British food keeps its bad reputation.B) TV chefs improve British cooking habits.C) British people eat in restaurants more often.D) Advertising events influence British cooking.

Penguins in AntarcticaJeff Wilson, the director of the documentary Frozen Planet, spent three months filming penguins in Antarctica. He noticed that during their one-month breeding season1, the male birds were building special homes for their eggs – they made holes and filled them with stones to protect their eggs. Males with the most stones in their holes were more attractive to females, so in a colony of half a million penguins, the best stones were highly prized. Several times, Wilson even saw penguins that kept bringing stones to their holes for long hours not knowing that their neighbours were stealing a stone every time they left their holes unprotected. Mr Wilson compared the penguin colony during their breeding season to a field of tents at a music festival, and added, “Male penguins are like male festival-goers who have had too much beer – they’re egoistic and aggressive to other males.”

(www.news.discovery.com, upraveno)1 breeding season: období páření

29 What penguin behaviour did Mr Wilson notice during his stay in Antarctica?

A) Male penguins protected their neighbours’ eggs.B) Male penguins were aggressive to female penguins.C) Male penguins took stones from their neighbours’ holes.D) Male penguins spent three months making holes for their eggs.

www.k9friends.com

There are various reasons why people create web pages. The founder of www.k9friends.com, lorry driver Diarmuid Scullin from Bellingham, UK, created a special social networking site to help dog lovers meet each other in real life. Some of them later even became his friends. Although it earned him a lot of money, he actually only intended to create a support group. Creating it took him two hard years, during which he hardly relaxed.

Everything started when he stopped his lorry in a town called Lewisham so suddenly that the car behind him almost crashed into him. He stopped because, as a dog owner, he wanted to help an old lady with a dog to get across the road safely. At the same moment he noticed a young man crossing the road with a dog in the opposite direction. Then Diarmuid realised how many people there were with dogs around him and was surprised by the fact that the people didn’t look at each other. A few weeks after leaving Lewisham for his hometown, Diarmuid began writing down how many people he saw walking their dogs. Hardly anybody had a partner dog walker. The more dog walkers he saw there, the more he wanted to create a social networking site.

He went to a shopping centre in his hometown, bought all the computer magazines they had, and later the same night he started reading articles in them about how to create a website. But creating it was more difficult than he’d expected. He planned and wrote everything on bits of paper and then tried to put it all together on a second-hand laptop. In the end, he gathered all his materials and went with them to look for professional help. The response of professional web designers surprised him. They thought Diarmuid’s idea of helping dog lovers by making a website wasn’t realistic, none of the designers even smiled and they added that his materials were useless and refused to help him. In their opinion, it wouldn’t work, and the whole idea seemed strange. He was told to keep his profession of lorry driver.

Diarmuid was disappointed by the professionals, but as a lorry driver, he is not easily frightened. As he couldn’t go to school, Diarmuid had to study on his own. After two difficult years of endless reading, self-studying, and making some mistakes, he started his website and k9friends.com finally found its way to the Internet from Diarmuid’s original cheap second-hand laptop. Now it is the most shared site for dog owners in the country. If he had believed the professional web designers, his dream would never have come true. He believes that, in the end, doing everything himself gave his website something special.
