TASK

Dear Readers,We love the springtime. The weather gets warmer, trees and flowers grow, animals have babies, and we can enjoy the countryside without our winter clothes. In this issue of Ready, we’ll practise talking about nature. We’ll also visit Ireland, a beautiful, green country, and some of the pop stars who live there. Do you know what the strongest animal in the world is? The answer might surprise you, and you can read about that in this issue, too. And as always, we have comic strips, puzzles and more fun waiting for you inside.

We hope you enjoy it!

let’s Talk about nature1

READY March 20216

We celebrate2 the end of one year and start of another on our birthdays and at New Year. We also celebrate important3 religious4

days, such as Easter and Christmas. And on two days in March, we celebrate the natural world. March 21st is the International Day of Forests, and

March 22nd is World Water Day.

Why are Forests Important?Forests are more than a nice place to walk. Natural areas with lots of trees (and not many people) can help to keep the planet healthy5. Forests give homes to many animals – and those animals would not be happy in a city or town. Trees also help to clean the air6 for everyone to breathe7, and none of us can live without breathing. However, forests around the world are disappearing8 to make space9 for new houses, farms or businesses.

Why Is Water Important? That sounds like a silly question, doesn’t it? We use10 water to drink, to shower and to cook, to name just a few examples. However, all of those things need clean water. Some parts of the world don’t have water coming into the kitchens or bathrooms of people’s homes. In the US city of Flint, dirty water is coming through the city's pipes11 into people's houses. Many people got very sick because of it. People need to have water, and they need it to be clean.

CLASS CHAT

We love Irish music, from folk music1 to U2 and the Pogues. But we’re not listening to that just now. There are some new Irish pop stars who are making great music. You might not know them yet, so here are

some we have on our Spotify* playlists2 at the moment.

*GLOSSARYSpotify – a digital music streaming service12. It has millions of songs, podcasts and videos from artists all over the world.streaming – playing audio or video on the internet. “To stream” means to watch or listen to streaming audio / video. The number of “streams” is how many times people have played the audio / video.goth – a style of rock music and fashion. People who like goth wear black clothes and make-up.

Songs to be alone3 ToOur favourite new star is Smoothboi Ezra, aged 18, from the seaside town of Greystones. Because of covid-19, they (Ezra uses they/them pronouns) aren’t working in music studios, playing live concerts or meeting music journalists. Instead, they’re making music in their bedroom. Ezra says their music is “a safe place for people”, so it’s perfect for these times. The fans4 agree5: Ezra has more than six million Spotify streams* already.

Here’s an artist for anyone who wants guitars and goths*. Kynsy (real name Ciara Lindsey) is another “covid artist”. Her first song, “Cold

Blue Light”, came out in 2020. Kynsy wrote and produced it alone at home. “I made the video in my garden,” she says. In January, she did

a special performance7 of the song at home for the BBC. That’s the one we’re playing all day on Spotify.

The Sad BoyJC Stewart (his friends call him Callum) is a singer-songwriter8

from Northern Ireland. He sings sweet, sad and romantic songs with names like “Break My Heart” and “Pick Up Your

Phone”. He jokes9 that he is “a professional sad boy”. We’re tapping10 our feet to “Have You

Had Enough Wine?”, a song about breaking up11 with his

girlfriend. Poor sad boy!

Info BoxCountry Name: Ireland /

The Republic of Ireland

Country Size: 70,273 km2

Number of People: around 5 million

Languages: Irish, English

Capital: Dublin

Leaders: President Michael D. Higgins,

Taoiseach [ˈtiːʃəx] (= prime minister3)

Micheál Martin

Money: Euros

History: The Potato Famine4

From 1845–1852, when Ireland was controlled by Britain, the potatoes growing in Ireland caught a disease5 and no one could eat them. About a million people died6 from hunger and illness, and another million left the country to find a better life.

The Irish language, also called Irish Gaelic, is one of the oldest languages in Europe. It uses the same letters

as English, but the letters make very different sounds. Today, English is most Irish people’s first language, but there are some parts of the country where Irish is the first language. You can even learn it on the Duolingo app.

The country of Ireland (or the Republic of Ireland) is on the island of Ireland. But the north part of the island is Northern Ireland,

a different territory which is part of the UK. In the Irish language,

the island and country are called Éire [ˈeːɾʲə].

Irish people weren’t hungry because there wasn’t enough food – there was enough. But the farmland was owned7 by Britain, and Britain wanted money. The British sold most of the food in other countries instead of8 giving it to the Irish, who were sick and hungry. The British were very racist9 towards Irish people. They talked about them like animals, kept them poor, and tried to destroy10 their language and culture. Today, things are much better.

snakes, but in reality, there were never any snakes in Ireland. There are also no moles16 or weasels17, even

though there are lots of them in England. On March 17th it is St Patrick’s Day,

VOCABULARY

The STrongeST AnimAlS

I love poo because I’m a dung beetle. Dung is animal poo.

I love poo so much that it’s in my name. Would you like to be called a poo person? I like it.

Dung beetles are the strongest animals in the world. Are you surprised? I can carry over 1,400 times more than I weigh4. That’s like a child carrying six buses filled with people. I want to see you carry six buses!

There are other strong animals. Eagles5 are the strongest birds. Anacondas are the strongest snakes. But they are not as strong as I am. I’m the strongest.

Dung is very important6 to me. When I find some dung I take it home. First, I make it into a ball. That way it’s easy to push7. Then I push the ball into a hole8 in the ground. Other dung beetles try to take my dung. I have to fight9 them. It’s very hard work fighting a dung beetle.

Balls of dung are great! I eat them. I lay10 my eggs in them, too. When my eggs hatch11, my babies have lots to eat. I can also make a house from the ball of dung. Can you eat your house? I can eat mine.

1 Dung beetles can carry 1,400 times more than eagles.

2 Dung beetles make their houses from their eggs.

3 Dung beetles use the sun to find their way home.

4 Scientists12 in France put little hats on some of their dung beetles.

Jackie Fox (NZ) | Music | A1–A2

Niall Horan is a 27-year-old Irish singer. He started singing when he was young. In fact, Niall’s aunt recognised1 his talent when he was about six. The first time she heard2 him sing they were in a car. At first she thought it was the radio. She told him he was going to be famous. And she was right.

Niall’s career started in the boy band One Direction when he was 16. After the band broke up3 in 2015 he

went solo. His solo albums were big hits. His first album, Flicker, went to number one in the US, and his second album, Heartbreak Weather, went to number four.

Music is not his only love. He loves golf so much that he started a golf management company4. He also loves football. But he injured5 his knee in a game. It was so bad that he even needed surgery6. He still kept his sense of humour7. He joked that the injury was because of a squirrel attack8.

Niall also had a secret for years. He was always known as “the blond one” in One Direction. After he went solo he stopped dyeing9 his hair. His fans discovered10 he actually has brown hair.

The Day everything ChangedBilly was in the metro when something strange3 happened4. The lights started flashing5 and the metro train stopped. The doors opened and Billy saw a strange old man and a magic6 sphere7. The man told Billy that he is a very special person. He told Billy to touch8 the sphere. It gave him a new power: the power of Shazam. After that, when he says the word “Shazam!” he turns into Shazam!

Shazam! When he is Shazam, Billy looks like a grown-up. He has a lot of special powers: he can control lightning9, he can fly, he can speak many languages, he is very strong and he is very fast. He has lots of other powers, too. But he still thinks like a teenage boy.

lunch at the top. We went home the same way. When we got to the bridge,

I couldn’t find my camera.”

“We were in the countryside all day. We started early in

the morning. We got to the top of the mountain around noon. Aoife took lots of photos of the hills9 to the south and

were walking.”
