HOW TO SEARCH ONLINE DATABASES

Basic

• All databases have similar interface and searching tools

• Once you learn to search one database, searching in the others will be easier

• It is always useful to look up the HELP section of the particular database, to spot some differences

HOW TO SEARCH ONLINE DATABASES

Step-by-step:• Choose keywords (terms), synonyms

• Define relations between keywords using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)

• truncation, stemming, wildcards (Search tips – for example ProQuest)

• * (asterisk): substitutes prefix or suffix

• ? (questionmark) substitutes letters in the middle of the word

• Combination of terms (keywords)

• Check for accuracy

• Create a search request

• Develop a research strategy

• Do a trial search

• Evaluate the relevance of trial search results

• Refine your search request

• Do the final search

• Results(export, print, e-mail …): bibliographic records or full texts

• Getting the primary documents (library, ILL, author …)

• Every database has its specifics, but the basic principles are the same.

• „The quality of search results depends on the quality of the request”
