Running a successful company and keeping quality high is a lot like keeping your body in good shape – once you practice the principles of eating the right foods in the proper quantity and at the proper time of day, develop and maintain a con-sistent exercise regimen and practice general healthy life-style habits, it becomes rela-tively easy to stay fit. But if something in your life changes significantly, it can be very chal-lenging to remain true to your healthy routine. I liken this to the growth we have seen over the last twelve months and the challenge of keeping Ritz-Craft in a "healthy shape" while we strive to meet increased de-mand. Since its reopening, we have increased production in Plant 2 to approximately 400 feet and hired an additional 57 employ-ees for that facility. You can't disagree that we all fall into somewhat of a gloomy state of mind each winter. But then again, our friends in New England have had to deal with over six feet of snow this year – so I guess we shouldn’t com-plain! A few months ago, I took my dog out in sub-zero, wind chill temperatures. It was just before dark and the wind was blowing snow through the rays of sunshine – it was a beautiful site, as long as you could keep your chin out of your jacket long enough to take it all in. It may seem odd, but In that moment I was able to draw a direct compari-son to our work at Ritz-Craft. We’re in the tail-end of winter here,

with spring just around the corner, and we certainly have nothing

to complain about – the sun is shin-ing. We've opened Plant #2 and have been hiring people for a few months. Plant #3 has been running near its full capacity for all of last year and strong into this winter. This isn't something that's happened in quite a few years. In fact, I remember for many back-to-back winters we had layoffs and shut downs all through the four and five winter months –always wondering when we were going to get the next full week of work. With that said, we must all continue to work our hardest and to keep our sights set on building defect free product. It continues to remain an extremely competitive market and a few more of our competitors have shut their doors since last year. Now, more than ever, we need everyone's help to

keep Ritz-Craft as efficient as possi-ble, both with materials and what we are producing each day. We cannot afford to be sloppy anywhere. It won’t be long till we hear some birds chirping. Keep up the good work everyone. Thanks, Eric John Vice President

Whether we’re working to train new employees, answering retail phone calls and questions or working along-side our builders to help them grow their market share, we have to keep a positive attitude and strive to exceed the expectations of our customers. I am a firm believer that, just like main-taining good physical health, we will maintain good growth by focusing on the principles and systems that have always kept us healthy. Just as a sore body is the sign of a great work out and growing muscles, our growing pains are a sign of greater sales and overall company growth. So, while it’s easy for all of us to get lost in the daily onslaught of adminis-trative tasks and grumble about how

busy things are, if we all take a step back and look at things objectively, growth is a great problem to have! Growth allows us to offer the newest and best products, build more custom and complex homes and bring the American Dream of home ownership to even more hard working people around the country. As our first quarter comes to a close, it is time to prepare ourselves for the busy spring and summer building sea-sons ahead. We are fortunate to have growing pains once again – these challenges become a great opportuni-ty to make our company and our cus-tomer’s companies even stronger and more successful. I thank you all for your positive attitude, dedication and

commitment to team work, and I look forward to a happy and healthy 2015. Sincerely, Paul D. John President/CEO

The Oswego II Praised in Louisville

This past January, members from all three Ritz-Craft divisions were on hand for the annual Louisville Hous-ing Show. Lake-front cottages are becoming more and more popular in the Mid-west market - with buyers choosing homes that have smaller footprints but high-end amenities. This year, in an effort to focus on this growing market segment , we debuted an up-graded version of the Oswego II. In order to achieve the cottage-like atmosphere we were after, we used

several rustic design elements, includ-ing weathered barn wood accents as seen in the photos above. The Oswego II also features distressed furniture style cabinetry, a custom entertainment center with barn doors and impressive guest and master suites. The entire Ritz-Craft team is excited to see this model displayed at East-wood Custom Homes in Traverse City, Michigan. - we are certain that the Oswego II will be a home run for East-wood Custom Homes.

I’d also like to personally thank Dan and Michelle Caudle of American Liv-ing Homes. A tour of their home helped to inspire several of the finish-es used in this model. To read more about this model and to view additional photography, please visit www.ritz-craft.com/OswegoII. Paul Lindsley General Manager

Two of the favorite rooms in the Oswego II were the kitchen and the master bedroom. Show attendees commented on the uniqueness brought to each room through barn wood style accents.

The barn door design shown to the left combines rustic flair with smart function-ality. While the doors are open, home owners have an entertainment center; with the doors closed, home owners have both bookshelves and a piece of rustic décor.

Set Your Sights for Warmer Weather This has once again been one of the coldest and snowiest winters on rec-ord. So far the weather in the North-east has not been very accommo-dating for the building industry, but before you know it, we will be com-plaining about the heat and humidity – so hang in there! Pennsylvania is off to a busy start this year, with reports from our builder network that the number of custom-ers inquiring about building a new home is up from 2014. As we contin-ue to increase footage in Plant #2, this is great feedback to hear.

We are very fortunate to have found skilled, hard-working, loyal employ-ees to help get the plant started and also increase productivity. The frigid temperatures and snow have been a challenge for all of our employees this winter – I would like to thank all of you for your dedication and com-mitment! The weather has made working con-ditions challenging for our builders as well, but soon this cold and snowy weather will be behind us and we can all get back to our normal building routines.

We are excited about the new floor-plans and offerings set for introduc-tion during the upcoming spring sea-son and we are expecting to see a further increase in orders. So, let’s get this winter behind us and have a great 2015! Steve Forcheskie General Manager

According to a recent article in Virtual Strategy Magazine entitled, “Growing Consumer Preference for Modular Homes drives the Prefabricated Hous-ing Market,” demand for eco-friendly and energy efficient homes continues to rise. To address this rising market demand, Ritz-Craft partnered with Certified Energy Raters (CER) a year ago to develop an easy-to-follow set of options for today’s home buyers to use while selecting their new Ritz-Craft home. Certified Energy Raters created a Ritz-Craft Plant Quality Performance Prod-uct Label (QPP) as a way of certifying that the plant portion of the build complies with a prescribed set of effi-ciency and performance building guidelines as established by CER. These guidelines will give each new Ritz-Craft home owner piece of mind that their home has been built to in-clude proper air sealing techniques, a

grade #1 insulation install and proper installation of thermal

barriers. Furthermore, each Ritz-Craft home is constructed in adherence to the best performance building prac-tices as prescribed by CER and the EPA. The Plant QPP Label only covers the plant portion of the build and pro-spective new Ritz-Craft buyers have the option of adding either a HERS Certification Label or an Energy Star Label. The HERS option includes the plant build per QPP guidelines, CER model-ing/HERS prescription and a blower door/duct blaster in-field testing by a third party to ensure no failures. The Energy Star option requires all the elements of the HERS certification, plus many additional Energy Star re-quirements specific to the Energy Star program. The Energy Star option re-quires more from the plant, the rater, HVAC contractor and builder to achieve final certification, but it will give the home owner all the benefits of a high performance, premium built

Energy Star Labeled home which would be entered on the Energy Star national registry. If a Ritz-Craft home owner chooses either HERS or Energy Star labeling options, they will have the added benefit of knowing their new home has been third party tested and certi-fied for energy efficiency. In fact, each of the labeling options will allow the home owner to enter their home and its test results with the national registry which would add to their new home market value. To learn more about the Ritz-Craft High Performance options, please contact your Ritz-Craft account repre-sentative. David Lovell Director of Sales

Legacy Crafted Cabinets recently re-turned to KBIS - the largest stage for the kitchen and bath industry – for the third consecutive year. Held this past January in Las Vegas, Legacy’s display highlighted our new-est cabinetry designs and colors, in-cluding a unique entertainment cen-ter with Silt and Grand Canyon Metro cabinets. The display also featured a

large center is-land with Essex cabinets on the front in Antique Ivory and Warm Stone with our Cottage Distress-ing Package and a mix of Metro cab-inets on the back-side. By attending KBIS we are able to get valuable feed-

back from both customers and fellow cabinet manufacturers about what buyers are looking for. This will ulti-mately help us to further define our market niche and push for innova-tion. In addition, the show also al-lowed us to introduce our newest products and show that we have a competitive product offering. Those who visited the booth were

impressed with the flexibility offered through Legacy Crafted Cabinets. The colors and finishes showcased within the display where spot-on in terms of current market trends. Show attendees were also impressed by the quality of the cabinet finishes and Legacy’s commitment to being a “Made in the USA” manufacturer. In a continuous effort to increase brand exposure, gain valuable feed-back and research industry trends, Legacy Crafted Cabinets will once again promote themselves in the Kitchen and Bath Industry by attend-ing the 2016 KBIS show in Las Vegas next year, January 19 – 21. So mark your calendars and plan to join us at the show!

Contemporary Twist on a Traditional Favorite

Our 3x6 white subway tile option offers a traditional backsplash look that never goes out of style. Howev-er, some home buyers don’t like the idea of having white tile with white

grout, or are concerned with keeping white grout clean and pristine throughout the years. In situations like these, Ritz-Craft’s new Winter Grey Grout #335 delivers the perfect solution! The contrast of white tile with grey grout maintains the simplicity and clean lines of subway tile and adds the contrasting colors many home buyers seek in contemporary designs. The color grey has continued to grow in popularity throughout the world of interior design and this combination allows buyers to incorporate it subtly. This combination can also be mixed

with our 1x1 mosaic and horizontal glass tile offerings in applications ranging from full-height backsplashes behind a range, to a simple accent strip that wraps around the kitchen. For more information on our tile and grout options, feel free to contact your Ritz-Craft account representa-tive or the Ritz-Craft design depart-ment.

Design Trends: Rustic Rules

Design Trends continue to lean to-wards more rustic features which add character and charm to a home. With that in mind, Ritz-Craft has been re-searching ways to add additional rus-tic options to our buying experience. The Ritz-Craft design team, along with Legacy Crafted Cabinets, attended the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show earli-er this year and had a first-hand look

at the most popular rustic trends for 2015. High on the list of de-sign trends is a Cottage look paired with rustic elements. A great way to achieve this look is by taking a traditional cabinet and adjusting the finish to look dis-tressed in both color and texture. Ritz-Craft now offers many op-tions that comple-ment that look, in-cluding clear mercury

glass pendants, rustic laminate floor-ing and cabinet hardware. One easy way to add a rustic look is by using a chiseled edge a kitchen island coun-tertop. Since smooth lines rarely oc-cur in nature, this chiseled edge is a great way to add the rustic feel of na-ture to any home. By mixing rustic features with tradi-tional, contemporary, industrial and

cottage looks, these design trends can be seen in home designs all over the country. The weathered barn wood sliding door shown on page 3 of this news-letter is an example of that mix – in-cluding elements of rustic and tradi-tional. Add the metal hardware and it is a real crowd pleaser! Want to add some rustic flair to your next model home? Contact the De-sign Department at [email protected] or [email protected]. Sincerely,

Instant Paradise Ritz-Craft was recently featured as the centerfold story of Country’s Best Cabins magazine’s 2015 Buyer’s Guide. The story, titled “Instant Paradise,” featured our award winning Killington Cabin home and goes in depth about the time advantages of modular home construction. The owner of the home was quoted as saying: “When I initially started

thinking about building a home in Vermont, my main concern was

the amount of time it would take to build. Winters can be long, so I wasn’t willing to take on a project that was going to take years to complete. After researching modular homes, I quickly realized that I could get the quality I was looking for and have it finished within a few months.” You can read the full story online at http://www.countrysbestcabins.com/instant-paradise.

Scott Rouleau, son of modular indus-try icon Jerry Rouleau and owner of Rouleau Communications, recently contributed a guest article to the Ritz-Craft blog. The article received so much positive feedback that we de-cided to reproduce it here. Enjoy! “Here’s an interesting question for you: When you buy a car, do you have it assembled in your yard, out in the elements, for several months? This seems like an outrageous sugges-tion, of course - foolish, in fact - be-cause if that were the case, you’d have to deal with many months of big machinery rumbling about your yard, potentially damaging your property and certainly lacking in efficiency. Im-agine your engine and the interior were nearly finished, but (since it’s sitting out in the open) several parts were compromised in the elements, requiring new materials, more ex-pense and the loss of the originals – a waste of time, money and an environ-mental burden.

Perhaps you’re chuckling, or rolling your eyes, because this scenario simply doesn’t make sense. As we all know, what does make sense is to have your car built in a climate con-trolled environment that’s designed especially for the construction of cars. So, if it seems that common sense prevails in the auto industry, why shouldn’t this also translate to the housing industry? Design and style aren’t compromised – Ritz-Craft’s homes are built stronger than traditional on-site constructed homes. Constructed in a controlled environment in their state-of-the-art factory, missing or damaged materi-als and weather delays are not a fac-tor. The result is a precision-constructed, energy efficient home, ready to occupy in 6-10 weeks, as op-posed to six months to a year, with traditional stick framing. Ritz-Craft Custom Homes offers home buyers numerous floor plans from which to choose and each plan can be

customized to match your dream home design. Their modular system enables you to add living space quick-ly and easily so as your family grows, your home can easily grow with you. All Ritz-Craft homes are built in a con-trolled environment, in a specially designed facility. This results in sig-nificant waste reduction, and a home with a much lower carbon footprint than that of a typical site-built home. There is even less fuel used by crews commuting to job sites each day for up to a year to erect an on-site con-ventional home. Modular building is increasing expo-nentially throughout the country, par-ticularly on the East Coast. US Census Data shows that modular homes have a strong presence in the Northeast; accounting for over 10% of home completions. Modular building simply makes sense.”

Modular Makes Sense

The Millennial Generation, also known as General Y, are those people born between 1980 and the late 1990s. In 2015, Zillow predicts that this younger generation will overtake Baby Boomers as the generation pur-chasing the most homes. So - what does this mean for your home building business? Here are five important things to consider about this younger group of home buyers and sellers. 1) They’ve done their homework. It

is very rare that millennials will need someone to show them properties to consider. With the

whole internet at their fingertips, they already know where they want to live and how much it should cost.

2) Customer Service is King. Millen-nials want valid, actionable infor-mation and they want it right away. They expect a partner in their home building process, so the quicker you can serve them, the better.

3) Mobile matters. Apps for phones and tablets and mobile-optimized websites are the go-to infor-mation source for this generation. If you’re not staying up-to-date with technology, you’re behind.

4) Peer reviews have an impact. In addition to what they find online, Millennial home buyers will ask their parents, friends and co-workers for insight on their home search. Make sure updated testi-monials are on your website and you have an active presence on social media.

5) Time to Text. Don’t be surprised if younger buyers don’t answer calls. A multi-tasking generation, Millennials won’t waste their time on the phone if they can accom-plish it by text. So start exercis-ing your thumbs and watch your response rates climb! 7

Training Across State Lines

As Ritz-Craft continues to grow our market share within each of our three locations, we have made it our mis-sion to increase communication be-tween all divisions. Weekly meetings continue to take place between all departments with members in all three locations, including engineer-

ing, purchasing and quality con-trol.

While each Ritz-Craft division main-tains a certain level of autonomy and has the ability to make changes based on regional preferences, these weekly meetings allow members of each de-partment to share best practices and policies from their division that may benefit others. Furthermore, interde-partmental folders have been set up on the Ritz-Craft servers to share pho-tos for quality control purposes and an employee exchange program has been implemented where key man-agement employees from one divi-sion work with another division for a week. We’ve found that a fresh set of eyes can help tremendously when it comes to brainstorming new ideas and helping to identify areas in need of improvement. While proper training has always been important at Ritz-Craft, our re-cent and continued influx of new em-ployees warrants a better structured system. As this next generation of the

Ritz-Craft family takes hold within our company, we are confident that our policies, systems and overall quality will only continue to improve. As always, we look to all of our em-ployees and our builders to help us identify areas for improvement and where further training may be neces-sary. We encourage all employees to take these ideas to their department supervisor and we encourage all of our builders to voice their ideas to their account representative. By continuing to work together we can ensure that all of our employees are well-trained and knowledgeable, not only where their main job respon-sibilities are concerned, but with overall business operations as well. This will ensure that Ritz-Craft contin-ues to offer only the highest quality products to our network of home builders and to all retail home buy-ers.

Cheap Tricks to Prep a Home for Sale Whether you’re thinking about re-vamping your model home or you have a spec home that’s been sitting on the market for a while, these sim-ple tricks can help you get to the clos-ing table faster. 1) Clear clutter. Too much “stuff”

only hides the features of a home. Keep the knickknack décor to a minimum so that buyers can better imagine their belongings in the space. g

2) Paint an important room. Buyers spend the most time scrutinizing a home’s entryway, kitchen and master bathroom. To get the big-

gest bang for your buck, revamp one of two of these rooms, in-stead of the entire house. h

3) Plant colorful flowers. Spring is almost here and nothing says that better than flowers. Spruce up the front of the house or model with colorful plants along the sidewalk, against the house or both. h

4) Set the mood. Before you bring a prospective customer to the home, turn on all the lights, open a window to let some fresh air in and light a candle. These small touches go a long way in making a house feel like a home.

Meet Our Newest Ritz-Trans Employees

Ritz-Trans is pleased to welcome the newest driver to join our team - Brad-ley Bingaman. Brad comes to Ritz-Trans with over 25 years of experience in the modular home transportation industry, having worked for companies like Icon Lega-cy and Professional Building Systems. As you can imagine, a man with such a long tenure behind the wheel is full

of interesting stories from the road: “My most memorable haul,” explains Brad, “was from a routine trip to New York state. The hitch broke off of my truck and I had to use a truck jack to lift the house - that’s when the house slipped and fell directly on my foot.” At the end of that

story, Brad thanked God, soft ground and his determined wife who helped him retrieve his foot from under the module! Not all of Brad’s stories are that dra-matic. In fact, most of his days are very pleasant. “The best part of my job is watching the expressions on people’s faces when I deliver a house,” Brad says. “It

feels good to be a part of someone’s home building journey.” Even though Brad has only been a member of the Ritz-Trans team for about one month, we still asked him to share his favorite part about work-ing here: “I like it all,” he said. “The people are great to work with, the equipment is well-maintained and Ritz-Craft builds a good product to haul.” The next time you see Brad at your job site, be sure to say hello and ask him to share a few more of his stories from behind the wheel.
