Miltonと ギ リ シ ャ悲 劇
ParadiseLostに お け る 神 の 観 念

ParadiseLostの 初 め に,Milton自 ら言 って い る よ うに,"tojustify
thewaysofGodtomen"が,彼 カミ心 を 最 も費 し,そ の た め に 多 くを犠
牲 に し た,生 涯 の 問題 で あ っ た。 彼 の 諸 論 文 もこれ に言 及 し,叉,こ れ
ユ
が・ParadiseLosちSamsonAgonistesの テ ー マで あ る。Milton自 らは
「神 の 道 の 正 し さ」 に は,確 固 た る信 仰 を もって い て,同 時 代 の,叉,後
代 の 誤 り迷 う人 々 の教 育 の た め に 書 く,と 言 って い る。
Teaching over the whole book of sanctity and virtue through
all the instances of example, with such delight to those especially
of soft and delicious temper who will not so much as look upon
Truth herself, unless they see her elegantly dressed, that
whereas the paths of honesty and good life appear now rugged
and difficult, though they be indeed easy and pleasant, they
would then appear to all men both easy and pleasant , though
they were rugged and difficult indeed . And what a benefit
this would be to our youth and gentry may be soon guessed by
what we know of the corruption and bane which they suck in

同 時 に,Milton自 ら の 多難 な,波 乱 に富 ん だ生 涯 を考 え る と,そ れ ら一
つ一 つ を 克服 して い っ た彼 の魂 のprogressの 吐 露 と言 え る し,

今 こ こ で 考 え た い の は,ParadiseLostに お け る,神 と人 間 との 問 麺 で
あ る。Satanを 神 に対 す る人 間 の態 度 の 一 つ の型 と して み る と,そ の
Satanj,YYt.対 す る神 の道 と,Adam,Eveに 対 す る神 の 道 とは,非 常 に 異 な
る もの と して描 か れ てい る。 そ の理 由 と して 考 え られ るの は,神 自 らの言
葉 に あ る 。
The first sort by their own suggestion fell,
Self—tempted, self—deprav'd : Man falls deceiv'd
By th' other first : Man therefore shall find grace,

Satanに 対 して,神 は"th'othernone"と 言 い 切 っ た よ うに,愛 も慈
悲 もみ せ ない,救 い を完 全 にshutoutし た,冷 た い厳 しい態 度 を示 す。
神 は,正 義 とそ れ に 基 く正 しい 怒 りと罰 を もっ ての み,Satanに 対 処 し,
決 して憐 れ み に傾 くζ とが ない 。 この 神 の 姿 を描 くに際 し,叉,そ れ に反
抗 す るSatanの 姿 を創 る に際 して,Miltonは,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 に み ら れ
る 入 問 と神 との対 立 す る姿 を,借 用 して い る と考 え ら れ る。Miltonが ,
神 の 道 を正 当 化 す る ため に,詩 を書 い た よ うに,三 大 ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 詩 人 達
の 主 題 も,人 問 に対 す る神 の道 の正 し さ,で あ っ た。BucherやGrier-
sonは,彼 等 に つ い てParadiseLostの"tojustififythewaysofGod
tomen"を 引 用 してい る位 で あ る。Milton自 身 もギ リシ ァ悲 劇 につ い て,
そ う考 えて い た と思 わ れ る。 散 文 にお い て も,ParadiseR曙 伽 θ4に おい
て も,悲 劇 詩 人 達 を,mora1を 説 く賢 明 な人 々 で あ り,人 生 の 師 であ る
と言 って い る。

Verityに よれ ば,Miltonは 「師 」 とい うこ と を,と て も重 ん じて い た 。
In Milton's view the great poet is a teacher in the first place,
7 a singer in the second.
しか し,Miltonは ギ.リシ ァ悲 劇 を,Chance,Fateと い う,古 い ギ リシ
ァの神 々 の観 念 か ら切 り離 して は い ない。 実 際,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 は,神 の 道
の正 し さを 説 きつ1も,運 命 の 皮 肉 さ,矛 盾,嘲 弄 を も歌 って い る。 そ し
て,そ れ らの古 い 神 の 観念 を改 め,発 展 させ,正 義 の 神 を証 明 し よ うと し
て い るの で あ る。 こ のFate,ChanceはSatanに よ っ て,Paradise
Lostの 神 に適 用 され,頻 出 す る。(WhetherupheldbyStrengthor

Fateを 正 しい 神 の 意 志 と同一 視 して,そ の存 在 を認 め たMiltonも,
Chance,Necessityを 神 に 帰 す る こ と は な く,神 に・"Necessityand

る 。 そ れ に も拘 ら ず,Satanやfallenangelsに,Fate,Chance,
Necessityを 全 て 神 と 混 同 さ ぜ て い る の は,ギ リ シ ァ悲 劇 の 神 ゐ 観 念 が,
そ こ に,意 識 的 に 導 入 さ れ て い る こ と を 証 明 し て い る と思 わ れ る 。 艦

こrの最後 の 引 用 に は,Macmillanが,次 の よ うな註 を つ け て い る。
When Brutus was about to commit suicide, he quoted two
lines of Euripides, '0 unhappy virtue, you were after all mere
words, and I practised thee as a reality : you it seems were en-
slaved to force,' or `to chance.' Milton is evidently thinking of

these two lines of his favourite Greek dramatic poet, ....

相 剋,と 表 現 し て い る が,こ れ は,Satanと 神 と の 関 係 を,よ く表 現 し て
い る 。Satanが,神 に 言 及 す る 時 の`theThunderer,'`TheTyrant,'
`TheTyrannyofHeaven,'`TheTorturer,'`TheConqueror,'

`Heaven'shighArbitrator'等 は,全 て,ギ リ シ ァ悲 劇 のZeusを 連 想 さ

せ る・ 例 え ば ・`thetyrantofHeaven'oそ し て?Fateを 人 間 に は ど う
に もで き ない 絶 対 的 な もの,と 考 え て い て,Miltonの 信 じ て い る も の
と,異 って い る。ParadiseLostやTheChristianDoctrineで,Mil-
tonは,神 の 意 志 と は,絶 対 的 な もの で は な く,神 の予 知 と,人 間 の 自 由
意 志 と は,相 反 す る もの で は ない こ とを 説 明 してい る。 つ ま り,Satanの
神 の観 念 は,そ の 自由 に対 す る観 念 と同 じ く,誤 った もの な の で あ る。 そ
して,そ の よ うな運 命 に,雄 々 し く も反 逆 し,そ の よ うな神 の 体 制 を打 ち
壊 して,真 の 自 由 を得,自 ら,神 々 に代 っ て統 治 せ ん と す るSatanの 迷
妄 は,Satanの 根 本的 罪,根 本 悪 た るprideか ら来 る もの で あ る。pride
に よ ってSatanは,自 分 が 被 造 物 であ るこ と を否 定 し,神 に並 ぶ もの,
否,神 に ま さ る もの と して神 に抵 抗 し,そ の命 令,掟 を無 視 し,そ の 支 配
下 か ら逃 れ よ うと す る。 そ して,そ れ を 自由 と称 し,自 由 を 説 き,自 由 の
擁 護 者 の 如 く振 舞 う。 こ の よ うなSatanの 描 写 は,Satanを して,ギ リ
シ ァ悲 劇 的heroを 思 い 起 させ,ParadiseLostの 主 人公 と させ る 大 き
な要 素 と な っ て い る。 運 命 を重 荷,又yokeと 感 じて,そ れ か ら逃 れ よ
うと して戦 い,つ い に は,そ れ に お しひ しが れ る人 間 とい うの は,ギ リシ
ァ悲劇 の人 間 達 の 殆 ん ど全 てが そ うであ り,自 由の 庇 護 者 と し て 立 つ 姿
は,Blake,Shelley以 来,AeschylusのPrometheusと し て,讃 美 さ
れ て い る。

も,V,・'.1,他 に 頻 出 す るnewlaw(s)と い う考 え も,Prometheus
のZeusに 対 す る 言 葉 を 想 わ せ る 。

Prideは 又,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 の 中心 問 題 で あ る。 三人 の 悲劇 詩 人 達 は,神
に 対 す るPrideを,様 々 に考 え,扱 っ た。 神 に対 す る 人 間 の態 度 や,人
間 の 在 り方 を:考察 す る上 に,Prideを そ の根 本 と な る罪,悪 の 根 源 と して
考 え た。Bucherは,次 の よ うに 説 明 して い る。
... that insolence or hybris which has its root in want of
reverence and want of self-knowledge, which is the expression
of a self-centred will recognizing no power outside himself, and
knowing no law but its own impulses.... This Insolence in the
Greek tragedy is the deepest source of moral evil. It is the
spirit of blind self-reliance which does not respect eternal
ordinances, which seeks to overpass the bounds set for mortality 19
and ignores the conditions of existence.
こ のPrideは,キ リ スrに お い て も,罪 の 根 源 で あ り,St.Augustine

の 考 え で あ り,正 統 教 会 の教 え で あ る。
しか1し,Miltonが,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 のPride,即 ちhybrisに 強 く印 象
づ け られ,大 ぎ く影 響 を 受 け てい たこ とは,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 の形 式 に則 って
創 ったSamsonAgonistesに お い て,Prideを 中 心 の 問 題 と し,そ の題
を も,初 めSamsonHybristesと も考 え てい た こ とか ら も推測 で き る。
そ し てSamsonAgonistesに お け る神 に,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 のZeusが 大 き
ユ
く影 を落 して い る こ とは,Parkerが 詳 述 して い る。Fateと い う語 こそ
出 て こ ない が,Parkerも 指 摘 してい る よ うに,最 初 に,Samsonの 出生
に 当 って,天 使 が 訪 れ,お 告 げ が あ った こ とを語 る。

こ の よ うなprideの 権 化 た るSatanに 対 す る 神 を描 くに 当 り,ギ リシ
ァ悲 劇 のZeusへ の 暗 示 が み ら れ る の は当 然 では ない だ ろ うか?勿 論,
Bush,Empsonも 言 う如 く,ParadiseLostの 神 は,多 くの 神 の 観 念 の
混 合 物 で は あ る が。

ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 に お け るZeusは,名 称 は同 じであ って も,Homerに ょ っ
て 描 か れ,抒 情詩 入 達 に 歌 わ れ た,気 紛 れ で,嫉 妬 深 く,入 間 的 な,人 間
を もて あ そぶ 神 々 の王 た る もの とは,か な り異 な って い る。 ギ リシ ァ悲 劇
のZeusは,殆 ん ど一 神 教 と も言 え る。Zeusと い う名 の も とに,正 義 と
理 性 に基 い た 法 を もっ て,宇 宙 と人 間 を支 配 す る,絶 対 至 高 の,全 能 の存
在 で あ り,そ のZeusの 意 志,掟 が,運 命 と な る。Chanceや 気紛 れ は,
神 に は あ る は ず の ない もの と して,justifyし てい っ た。 これ はZeus信
る仰 とい わ れ,Aeschylusが 考 察 し,Sophoclesに 受 け継 が れ た 。Euripi-
desに つ い て は,矛 盾 し ない 一 神 観 を と ら え るこ とは 不 可 能 だ とい うの が
定 説 で あ る。 しか し ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 詩 人 達 も,神 を愛 と し,恩 寵 に よ って,
人 間 の心 を和 げ,regenerationに ま で導 くとい うと こ ろ ま で は,考 えが
及 ば な か っ た。Satanの 考 え る神 も,Samsonの 考 え る神 も又,そ うで
あ る。 二 人 共 神 の 愛 と恩寵 に つ い て,一 言 も言 わ ない 。
単 にSatanが 考 え て い るだ けで は な く,-Satanに 対 す る神 自ら もそ
うで あ る。 天 の 高 み か ら,Satanの 計 画 と実 行 を み で,嘲 笑 し,更 に 惑

せ る 。Samsonに つ い て も,Parkerは 次 の よ うに 言 っ て い る 。
But in Samson Agonistes there is nothing said about divine
`grace .' We are told many things about the Deity, but we are 28
not told that He is loving.
キ リス ト教 に お い て も,旧 約 の神 と新 約 の 神 と は異 な り,旧 約 の 神 に
は,愛 は な く,新 約 のChristに よ り初 め て,愛 が もた ら され た と しば し
ば言 われ る 。 しか し,旧 約 聖 書 のHoseaに は,不 実 の 妻 に 例 え られ た罪
深 い人 間 に 対 し,変 らぬ愛 を注 ぎ赦 す夫 た る神 が歌 われ,SongofSolo-
monに も恋 人 同 志 の愛 に よ って,神 と人 間 との愛 が歌 わ れ て い る。又,
Isaiah,Psalmsに も,愛 の 神,神 の 人 間 へ の 変 らや 栄 と慈 悲 が頻 出 す る。
Milton自 身,TheChristianDoctrineに お い て,旧 約 と新 約 の 神 を区
別 す る こ と な く引 用 し,次 の よ うに言 っ てい る。
The Christian Doctrine is that Divine Revelation disclosed in
various ages by Christ ... concerning the nature and worship

ParadiseLostに お い て も,Christは,神 を 目に 見 え る もの と し た 存 在
で あ り,天 地 創 造 の以 前 に,神 と共 に在 った もの と して,描 か れ てい る。

少 く と も,ParadzseLostに お い て は,Bushも 指 摘 して い る と お り,
MiltonのArianismは 殆 ん どみ ら れず,正 統 派 の三 位 一 体 説 と矛 盾 し な
い神 が描 か れ て い る。 その,愛 の化 身 で あ るChristさ え も,Satanに 対
して は,父 な る神 に と りな し もせ ず,天 国 の 至 福 か ら,地 獄 の 底 へ つ き落
すべ き雷 の一 撃 を与 え る。 こ の雷 は,旧 約 聖 書 の,雷 を言 葉 と して 語 り,
雷 を 罰 と して災 害 の 形 で人 間 に 与 え るJahveの 雷 をで は な く,Zeusの
武 器 で あ り,罪 の 報 い と して,人 間 を撃 つ 雷 を連 想 さ せ る。 そ して 次 の 部
分 に は・AeschylusのPrometheusBound992-96とSevenAgainst
Theろes427-31が 暗 示 され て い る。

も指 摘 す る とお りで あ る。 こ の輝 か しい勝 利 者 た るChristのimageも

1641年 のTheReasonげChurchGovernmentでMiltonは"an

げ,今 す ぐで は な い が,必 ず,次 の い ず れ か の 形 式 で,1ife'sworkた る
作 品 を 書 く と 言 っ て い る 。

and those other two of Virgil and Tasso, are a diffuse, and
the book of Job a brief model. ... or whether those dramatic 40
constitutions, wherein Sophocles and Euripides reign.
そ し て,そ の 年 か ら 翌 年(1641-42年)に か け て,J'amsonpursophorus
orHybristes,orSamsonmarriingorinRamathLechi,Dagonalia
と い う題 の 悲 劇(三 部 作 ら し い)の 計 画 が あ り,1642年 に,太 陽 へ 呼 び か
け るSatanのsoliloquyの 一 部(W,32-39)が 創 ら れ た。 そ れ に は,
EuripidesのPhoenissaeの 巻 頭(1-6),太 陽 に 呼 び か け るIocastaの
soliloquyと,Aeschylusの1)rometheusBoundに お け るPrometheus
の 太 陽 へ の 独 白(88-92)の 影 響 が あ る こ と は,既 に 多 くの 人 々 の 注 意 し
て い る と こ ろ で あ る。 そ し て,そ のSatanの 独 白 は,失 わ れ た 楽 園 とい

う主 題 の 悲 劇 のopeningversesに と 意 図 さ れ て い て,そ のAdamun-
paradiz'dと い う悲 劇 は,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 の 形 式 に 則 っ た も の で,"avery

こ の よ うに 考 え る と,Satan, .とそ の神 の描 写 に,ギ リシ ァ悲劇 の 神 の
観 念 が導 入 され て い るこ とは 明 ら か で あ る と思 う。 叉,SatanとSamson,
及 び,そ れ ぞれ に対 す る神 り描 写 に お 娃 る多 くの 共 通 点 も,そ れ を証 明 し
て い る と思 わ れ る。 しか しな が ら,ギ リシ ァ悲 劇 詩人 達 の,人 生 の 師 と し
て の 倫理 的,道 徳 的 態 度 を高 く評 価 しつ1も,キ リス ト教 の神 と神 へ の態
度 に 比 べ る と,第 二 義 的 であ り,悲 観 的 で あ り,よ り劣 る もの で あ る とい
う考 えは,Samson・4gonistesに は み ら れ ず,ParadiseLostを 経 て,
ParadiseRegainedに お い て,頂 点 に達 して い る。ParadiseRegained
にお い て,ギ リシ ァ と ロ ーマ の 栄 光 と輝 か しい文 化 を 讃美 す る.Satanを,
Christに 烈 し く排 撃 さ せ てい る ので あ る。
そ し て,こ の こ とは,SamsonAgonistesの 創 作 年 代 に 関 す るParker
の新 しい 意 見 に よ っ て も,一 層証 明 さ れ る も の と 思 わ れ る。Paradise
Lostが1658年 か ら63年 に か けて,ParadiseRegainedヵ ミ1665年 か ら66年
に か け て,完 成 され て い るこ とに は 異 説 は ない 。 しか し, .SamsonAgon‐
istesの 創 作 年 代 に つい て は,未 だに 不 詳 で あ って,従 来,ParadiseLost,
ParadiseRegainedの 後,1666年 か ら70年 の 間 に 書 か れ た 最 後 の 作 品 と
され て い た。 そ れ に対 して,Parkerは,SamsonAgonistesは``abitter
poem,adarkpoem‐anexpressionofdisillusionandpessimism
