John’s gospel

There are various ways to approach different types of people and it is essential to concentrate our thoughts and minds on Jesus Christ and on the different ways He dealt with people in John’s Gospel.

Chapter one introduces the John’s Gospel as a text book for Personal Evangelism.

Chapter two looks at the Lord Jesus and the way he deals with people who were forgetful. In John 2:1-11 Jesus meets their need in that He changed the water into wine.

Chapter three study the way of how the Lord Jesus deals with a very religious man. He illustrates how to deal with such people and He goes straight to the point by saying, “Unless you are born again.” (John 3:3)

Nicodemus does not understand the principles of the new birth. Jesus seeks to explain, by taking the environment and uses it as an illustration. “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John3:8) Jesus speaks of the wind that you cannot see but has an impact change the surroundings. Nicodemus still doesn’t understands as Jesus tells him: “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” (John 3:5-6)

“But Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born from water and the Spirit, you cannot enter God’s kingdom.  Human life comes from human parents, but spiritual life comes from the Spirit.” (John3:5-6 ‘NCV’)

He still does not understand therefore Jesus shows him what he knows and he can understand “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John3:14-16)

In Numbers 21:9 He refers to story of grumbling of the children of Israel in the dessert and God sense the serpents to bite them. Knowing the OT Nicodemus would realise that the only way healing could come is would be the look of faith to the serpent on the pole that Moses was told by God to set up. His thought will go to the serpent in the garden and the word of God  “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.” (Genesis 3:4)

Give in him to understand that is it look of faith that brings the salvation.

Chapter four shows us another approach of the Lord Jesus as He speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well. He does not say to her, “You must be born again” but, “Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:7)

Page 5: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Steps in witnessing: 1. Make contact 2.Arouse interest 3.Don’t be sidetracked 4.Don’t condemn 5.Listen 6.Confront directly

Example: Jesus with the Samaritan woman - John 41. He makes contact by asking her for a drink. Jesus was wiling to talk to anyone who had

a need, regardless of race, creed, or position in the community.2. He arouses her interest. “Living water” is a spring board for spiritual discussion.3. The Saviour has a set purpose and is not sidetracked by her questions. She tries

several times to turn the conversation from her need. When we witness this will often happen: the person tries to get the issue from himself or herself to some side issue. Our Lord Jesus keeps the person’s need of Himself to the forefront of the conversation.

4. He does not condemn her for her seeking love from man after man but is tactful, kind and considerate. No tut-tutting! He has come to bring her true and everlasting love.

5. From time to time she speaks, as in normal conversation, Jesus listens. Often we must hear the person out before we can share the message of the gospel. Individuals will often have misconceptions which they will often talk themselves out of it we but listen.

6. “Go, fetch your husband”. By confronting her directly, disguises are taken away. She realise the stranger knows all about her and yet loves her. Her need is satisfied as she accepts Him by faith as the Messiah. True disciples want to witness. She hurries to her village, waterpot forgotten!

Chapter five deals with the story of a man lying by the pool of Bethsaida. He has been there for so long that he has given up hope. The Lord Jesus asks him the most important question of his life, “Do you want to get well?”(John 5:6)

Chapter eight looks at the story of adultery when Jesus is left with the woman standing before Him. He has a very difficult situation, and as we encounter such situations, the Spirit of God is there to direct and guide us. He will bring all things to our remembrance, that is if it is in our memory. Dragged into His midst, is an immoral woman who has been caught in adultery. The Law says that she is to be stoned and the Pharisees wish to punish her in this way. What would we do in this situation? See the perfect example in Jesus Christ as he says, “Which of you is without sin? Let him cast the first stone”. (John 8:7). In this way He deals with the Pharisees and they leave, from the eldest to the youngest: Jesus is left with the woman standing before Him. Does He shout, “The wages of sin is death?” Does he point His finger at her, “You shalt not commit adultery”. The Lord Jesus deals with this in a different way. He says, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” (John 8:9) She realises the shame of her immorality as she stands there, possibly half-naked, for she was caught in the act of adultery. The Lord Jesus did not “pile it on”, but He did not let her get away with it. He did not condemn her, nor He excuse her as He says to her, “Then neither do I condemn you, go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:1-11)

See the Saviour touching the hearts of men and women. No wonder people following Him said, “Never a man spake like this man”. No wonder they said they were amazed at the gracious words that fell from His lips -- He spoke as a man who had authority and not as the Scribes and Pharisees who were always quoting other people.

CHAPTER 1Personal evangelism in John’s Gospel - witnessing

Jesus had travelled 70 miles to meet one woman. He was weary, thirsty and hungry but He had a desire to reach this woman and so, He overcame the drives of human nature; sleep, thirst and hunger. If we are to catch men for Jesus Christ, then our bodies must be brought under subjection. Paul says, “I keep my body under subjection”.

Making contact in public places:

The Lord Jesus came to this public place to meet one woman who was instrumental in reaching the rest of that village. One good contact is often the means of gaining an opportunity to speak to the whole family about the Savour. Statistics show that people are affected by an individual’s life or death, e.g. family, friends at work, etc.

The personal evangelism involves:

- Making contact- Common Interest- Arousing Interest- Don’t Go Too Far- Don’t Condemn- Stick to the Main Issue- Confront Directly

Jesus practically demonstrates how to witness:

Jesus used specific methods in witnessing to the Samaritan woman that we can also use. He began his conversation with her on a topic of natural and common interest to both of them. Jesus was sitting by the well at noontime when it was hot, and his being there would suggest to her that he, too, was thirsty. She had come for water as she was carrying a water pot.

Making Contact:

“Now he had to go through Samaria.  So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.  Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well at the public place. It was about noon.” (John 4:4-6)

Arousing Interest:

In verse 7, He says to her, “Will you give me a drink?”. He has caught her attention. We also need to find questions to ask. She says, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus did not answer this question and it is sometimes a good thing not to answer

Page 7: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

people’s questions as they will just hurry away. These questions should arouse an interest.

Hold The Interest:

Jesus said in verse 10, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water”. He talked about something which would hold her interest i.e. water. Jesus used a subject that could easily be a springboard to spiritual discussion, the environment.

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep”. (John 4:11) She still does not understand what this water is as the Lord has not yet told her. “Where can you get this living water?  Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” (John 4:12)

Jesus had a purpose and was not sidetracked by her questions. The Samaritan woman tried to turn away from the conversation. When we witness, people will often try to redirect the issue from themselves to some unrelated or side issue. We must avoid this in our own witnessing. Always return to main issue as Jesus did.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,  but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”  The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” (John 4:13-16)

Jesus has caught her attention, He is a Jew and she is a woman of Samaria. He has created an interest, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink...” (John 4:10) and He tells her about this water that would be in her a well of water springing up into everlasting life - He has created a desire. Not only has he created a desire for this water that would continually flow, he also brings her to a place where she seeks the satisfaction of her desire for this living water, as she says, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He does not answer her request nor does He respond, “Yes, you can have this living water” but He does say, “Go and call your husband.” How gracious the Lord Jesus is and how often when we are witnessing we offend. We want to lead them to a point where they are confronted by their sin but not by our accusation. We must be lead by compassion and the Spirit of God.

“Which husband?” she had already had many husbands - she probably thought her ‘thirst’ would be satisfied with many men. People today are thirsty and hungry, probably more so than they look. This woman had had many kinds of husbands, but non of these had satisfied the needs of her thirst. The woman answered, “I have no husband,” and Jesus said, “You are right when you say you have no husband.”

Page 8: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Jesus was gentle in dealing with the woman and her sin. This woman was willing to confess her sin, here is the beginning of conviction. Where there is no conviction of sin there cannot be repentance and therefore salvation by faith. (2 Corinthians 7:10)

The Samaritan woman confesses that she is an immoral woman but the Lord Jesus tells more about herself. He alone, knows the deep inner recesses of the heart so we are guided by the Holy Spirit to bring conviction. We cannot see the work of the Holy Spirit on the heart, but God’s word is true (John 16:8), as we can see from this passage of scripture as the woman said, ‘Yes, this is true.’ Then the Lord Jesus said, “You have had five husbands.”

She had been asking for living water but when the Lord Jesus put His finger on her sin she sought to avoid the issue. We meet people like her today, they will become very religious. We find that this woman, who had confessed that she had had five husbands, and was living with another man. She said, “I can see that you are a prophet.  Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” (John 4:19-20) So today we can meet people who proclaim to be religious and tell us what church they belong to. They often say I have been baptised or confirmed and that they are as good as the next person. When we witness and share the new life Christ can give, and they have come to a place where God’s word has brought conviction, people will hide behind their religion.

This Samaritan woman was under conviction and she is in shame of her sin. So she tried to escape. How gracious the Lord Jesus is. He does not say, “You Samaritans are wrong, we Jews are right”. He says, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.  You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.  Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:22-24)

Jesus says, it is not about the place we worship but how. It is not the denomination, or membership of a church that God is looking for. We can become involved in a dialogue of confusing argument over which church is right. In this way we waste a lot of time and go away without meeting the person’s need.

Witnessing claims:

Finally, the woman of Samaria says, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then the revelation comes, Jesus says, “I am He”. She then sees Jesus as the Lord.” (John 4:25)

We do not know very much of what happened afterwards, but He probably spent more time with the woman and said a lot more before the disciples came. They marvelled that He spoke with this woman of Samaria, yet none of them said, “What do you seek?; Why are you talking with her?”

Her water pot, was left by the well as she runs down the mountain-side. She told her neighbours, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”  They came out of the town and made their way toward him. (John 4:29-30)

REASONS WHY WE DO NOT WITNESSWORKSHEET CHAPTER 1

There are three most common barriers to witnessing as there is much stress and nervousness once we are learning to witness.

1. Sometimes just starting to mention to a person the name of Jesus Christ and the value of knowing him can be very difficult. Once we get the conversation around from girls, guys, the fraternity or sorority, politics, etc. to spiritual things, we have broken the first barrier.

2. Another barrier is to ask the person if he would like to receive Christ. Than nervous feeling returns once again. We must blast through this one also. Remember, many people, when they understand who Jesus Christ is and what he has done for them, will want him in their lives.

3. The last barrier is the most difficult. It is to ask him to receive Christ right now. This is the most important step. Often we tell the person how and then just leave him high and dry. We have not really witnessed until we ask the person to trust Christ. Never take the first no as final. Ask him over and over in the interview to receive Christ. Appeal to him through several different ways. If he says no, ask him why not? His answer will help you when you witness to others. Often it is some slight misconception or misunderstanding, which prevents his making the right decision in favour of Christ.

The only real way to learn to witness and become effective at it is to do it. It is only trying that one ever succeeds. Nothing succeeds like success and the word of God in Proverbs 11:30 says, “the one who is wise saves lives.”

You will be amazed how many people will appreciate your concern for them and be genuinely pleased that you talked to them. Remember, he that aims at nothing will hit it every time. Aim the word of God at the minds and hearts of the unregenerate and it will hit the mark every time and will accomplish that which the spirit of God intends.

GOOD QUESTIONS WORKSHEET CHAPTER 1

GOOD QUESTIONS HELP PEOPLE MAKE GOOD DECISIONS:

What brings you the most satisfaction in life?

What is your goal/goals in life?

Who are your best friends?

What is your basis for determining moral decisions?

What has been your experience with Christianity?

Who in your opinion is Jesus Christ?

In your opinion how does one become a Christian?

Has anyone ever taken the time to explain to you how you could become a Christian?

Have you come to know Jesus Christ in a personal way? If so, tell me about it.

When would be a good time to accept Christ?

Is there any good reason why you won’t accept Christ now?

If you died tonight where do you think you would spend eternity? Why? How can you know?

Would you like to know what God says about that?

Have you considered the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

What do you believe? Why do you believe that?

What is the basis for your belief/unbelief?

That’s a good question.

Why is that question important to you?

If I could answer that question would you be more willing to accept Jesus Christ?

What would it take for you to put your trust in Jesus Christ?

CHAPTER 2Personal evangelism in John’s Gospel - fishermen story

The Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “I will make you fishers of men”. In 2 Timothy 2:26 Satan goes about to catch men. Men are being caught by Satan and held captive or they are being caught by fishers of men for Christ. If we are ever going to fish for men, we have to be like the fishermen in the natural sense. Before fishing men for Christ it is important to know some principles of fishing which are described below.

FIVE PRINCIPLES IN ‘FISHING’ (catching men for Christ):

1. We must love our work

When I travel in England I try to drive at night and early in the morning when the roads are not so crowded. At about 4.00 am I often see the fishermen, carrying their baskets and tackle, on the roads thumbing a lift. Would we get up at 4.00 am to go and fish for men? The fishermen love fishing therefore if we are going to win men for Jesus Christ, we need to love the lost.

2. We must go where the “fish” are

We live in an age when the church is often like “Simple Simon”:Simple Simon went-a-fishingFor to catch a whale,All the water that he gotWas in his mother’s pail!

Very often, the church is ‘fishing’ where there are no ‘fish’. In many churches that are traditionally evangelical, there are very few unconverted, so we need to go where the ‘fish’ are, in the streets, workshop, hospitals, offices, and fish the people we meet day by day.

The Lord Jesus touched the blind man’s eyes and asked him, “Do you see anything?” (Mark 8:23; John 9:1-12) and the man replied, “I see people; they look like trees walking around” (Mark 8:24). His vision was impaired and when the Lord Jesus touched his eyes again, he saw men as men. Often our vision is impaired and we just see men and women when we really should see them as candidates for hell! The people that we rub shoulders with each day could die tomorrow and face eternity without Christ. They are lost without hope and yet so often we see them just as men and women. We live and work amongst the ‘fish’. Therefore our ‘fishing’ should be done at all times.

3. We must have patience

Page 14: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

It takes patience to win men and women for Jesus Christ. The work of the Holy Spirit has been likened to the work of a blacksmith making a chain. Each contact is a link in the chain and this is how the chain grows:

a) he\she hears about Jesus Christ in Sunday Schoolb) he\she has a godly relative who witness to him\herc) he\she receives a Gospel leaflet

So it continues till the last link is forged and they come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Remember that each link is important. Any link that is weak can break the chain; the strongest point in the chain is the weakest link.

4. We need to study the habits of the ‘fish’

I do not know much about fishing so when my lad Jonathan said, “Daddy, let’s go fishing.” I had to get a book on fishing. We bought a cheap rod, reel, catgut and hooks. Then along came Mr. “Catchpole” in his hat with hooks, thigh boots, etc. he must have had hundreds of pounds worth of equipment but he still failed to catch the fish!

Jonathan and I had learned a few things about fishing from the book. He knew that the fish came on the incoming tide and fed near the rocks. Mr. Catchpole was catching lots of seaweed, whilst Jonathan was catching fishes one after another! We had studied the habits of the fish and knew where they could be caught. So we also need to study the habits of the ‘fish’ and where they congregate.

5. We must have live bait

If the Lord has not spoken to us today through our quiet time, while we read and prayer, we would not have the desire to witness for Him. It is like offering a fish dead bait which it will not readily accept. So to help you each day use the Quiet Time Sheet in the manual which will help you to offer the live bait to catch ‘fish’!

BASIC LAWS OF SELLING:

There are four basic laws of selling and the Lord Jesus used each of these laws in John chapter 4.

1. When a Salesman endeavours to sell his products, he must first attract his customer’s attention. This is why so much money is spent on presentation and advertising, which can be sometimes more expensive than the actual product.

2. The Salesman wants you to have an interest in his product, otherwise you will have no desire to buy it.

3. The Salesman must create a determination to purchase his product. A desire to posses on the part of the customer is not enough.

Page 15: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

4. Lastly, having followed these laws of selling, he makes his sale.

Your personal testimony can be extremely effective when sharing your faith. Even if you have come from a Christian family, God can use it to convert many. Our testimony is attractive, interesting and creates a desire for the listener to trust the Lord. In a way, this enables them to make the decision to trust the Lord.

CHAPTER 3How to lead a person into personal relationship with

Jesus Christ

The task defined

To see the person led to the relationship with Jesus is a new beginning and therefore discipling and teaching must follow. It is irresponsible to leave a new born babe in Christ to fend for themselves. We must be ready and willing to help them grow and spent time with them. We cannot be satisfied with just a ‘profession of faith’. (Galatians 4:19)

The work of the Holy Spirit in the new birth

New birth is a work of the Holy Spirit and it does not depend exclusively upon a man’s decision or act of his will but upon a work of the Holy Spirit and the will of God. (John 1:13; Romans 9:16)

Gods work by his Holy Spirit, is a responsible for bringing:- conviction of sin (John 16:8-11)- to our hearts understanding (2 Corinthians 4:6)- men to repentance and faith (Acts 11:18)

It is the work of the Holy Spirit as without His activity there cannot be a true conviction of sin, a true knowledge of who Christ is or a true repentance and faith. They are not natural to a man.

Leading a person is therefore co-operation with the Holy Spirit and involves total dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Prayer is vital and we must be fit instruments for Him to be used.

The instruments God use

It is the work of the Holy Spirit and your obedience which will bring the person to a relationship with God. God uses the people to present the truth by word and deed. Bring people to a place where they will be exposed to the word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. This may mean lead them to a meeting where the Gospel is preached, or may encourage them to read the Bible and witness to the truth. The disciples were used in bringing men to the Lord so that He could speak to them. They knew the power of Jesus’ words to bring new life. (John 1:40-42; 44-47) cf., the woman of Samaria. (John 4:28-30)

God communicate the truth to his people by using us as we are speaking to them the word of God. (Romans 1014-15; Acts 26:18 ‘Paul’s commission’; Psalm 19:7-8; Psalm 119; 1 Peter 1:23)

Page 22: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Repentance and Faith

The instrument used in salvation is the word of God but repentance and faith are the means by which a person is brought to a relationship with God and new birth. (2 Timothy 2:25; Acts 5:31)

In Act 20:21, “I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.” repentance is seen to have a God ward aspect and faith, through not exclusively. True repentance and saving faith, through distinct from each other, are never found in isolation from each other.

Our requirement, therefore, is to bring these truths to the attention of the person trusting the Holy Spirit to open their eyes and mind of their understanding and see the truth of the new birth. Look at these verses:

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14-15)

“Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away.  But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.  Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.  But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.  Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.  And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.  The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.  For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 3:12- 4:6)

“What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.  This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.  The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 2:12-14)

Without God revealing His truth individually to us no one can be born again. (Isaiah 53:1; 1 Corinthians 1:21)

Page 23: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Examples of repentance and faith

2 Timothy 2:24-26 - ‘able to teach’ and ‘gently instruct’.

Acts 2:36-41 - ‘let all Israel be assured of this’ - declaration; ‘with many

other words he warned them; and pleaded with them’.

2 Samuel 12:1-14 - Nathan uses a parable to bring the truth home to David.

Jeremiah 5 - Jeremiah under the Spirit of God’s inspiration uses

questions in order to bring home the truth.

Job 42:5-6 - following an extended ‘teaching session’ Job realises

afresh his position.

Romans 4:21; Hebrews 11:6, 11, 19 - these verses show that faith rests on

knowledge of God’s character.

Final thought

Living in an age when many have invented an unscriptural image of Jesus. Do we realise the Christ to whom we are bringing people? He is the Christ of the Bible. He is an exalted Christ (Acts 2:32-36); He is the Lord (2 Corinthians 4:5; Romans 10:9); and He is reigning and sovereign (Hebrews 1:3). Man must not be encouraged to bargain but to capitulate. Sin seeks to maintain man’s position and reject God’s - this must be fully repented of.

CHAPTER 4 The word of God and personal evangelism

1. You need to have a working knowledge of the Bible:

a) That we might “answer the words of truth” . (Proverbs 22:20-21)b) Only the Bible shows the way of salvation. (11 Timothy 3:15)c) “So that it yields seed for the sower, and bread for the eater” . (Isaiah 55:10-11)

“The seed is the Word of God”. - the sower (Luke 8:11) - born again (1 Peter 1:23)

“Bread to the eater…” (Matthew 4:4; 1 Peter 2:2)d) It is the only weapon for this spiritual conflict.

The problems are spiritual. (Acts 26:18)The weapons must be spiritual. (1 Corinthians 10:3-4)Ephesians 6:17 and Matthew 4.Problem: Suppose someone says “I don’t believe the Bible, so don’t quote

the Bible to me”.- It is STILL the Sword of the Spirit: a swordsman and “I don’t believe in

swords!” (Jeremiah 23:29)- It is STILL the Scripture that the Holy Spirit uses to:

- bring conviction of sin and show the need of the Saviour.- show them that Christ is the Saviour they need.- show them how to receive Christ as Saviour.- answer their difficulties that are hindering them from receiving Christ. - the scripture will give them the assurance of salvation.

Therefore: you need to know how to use the Bible. How to do this? There are five ways - hear, read, study, meditate, and

memorise. One of the best and fastest for personal work is MEMORY.

2. Scripture memory as a means to becoming proficient in the use of the Bible in personal evangelism:

Some reasons why memorising the Scripture is so valuable.a) For victory over Satan. (Matthew 4)

- The example of Christ.- Satan quoted Scripture also.- Ask the enquirer to memorise the first verse before they go

home. (1 John 5:11-12; Revelation 3:20)b) For victory over sin. (Psalm 119:11)

- That I “might not sin”.c) Effective witnessing. (1 Peter 3:15)

- We need to be ready always.- The Holy Spirit will call to our remembrance.- Not indiscriminate quoting, but selective.

d) There are other good reasons, such as:

Page 27: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

- Finding God’s will. (Exodus 12:13; 1 Kings 18:36; Luke 10:33-34) DO NOT take a text out of the context to make a pretext.

- For meditation. (Psalm 1:2-3; Joshua 1:8; 1 Timothy 4:15)

You CAN memoriseYou have a poor memory? Many people do! Your memory is better than you think. Many older people have.Your must simply apply the rules of memory. One of these is review.Besides, the Lord will help you.Don’t have time? It doesn’t take time, it saves time! Do it while washing dishes,

shaving etc.

You need to memorise the following verses1. 1 John 5:11-122. 1 John 1:13. 1 Corinthians 10:134. Revelation 3:205. Romans 10:9

3. Evangelising the unconverted:

- The condition of the lost. (Ephesians 2:1; Acts 26:18; 1 Corinthians 4:3-4)- The ONLY remedy is the Gospel. (Romans 1:16)- We are to preach the gospel, not our opinions.- What is the Gospel? (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

The fact of sin. (Romans 3:23)The penalty of sin … DEATH. (Romans 6:23, 5:12)

- God hates sin because it robs us of such much.- The penalty is not to live a good life; go to church regularly.- Either YOU must pay that penalty, or someone must pay if for you.

Christ paid the penalty. (Romans 5:8)- ONLY Christ could. (Acts 4:12) - no sin of HIS own.- Christ did. (1 Peter 2:24)

4. But… we must accept:

- We may know the facts about Jesus, but we must appropriate HIM to our lives personally.

- How do we receive HIM for ourselves? 1. “To those who believed in HIS name.” (John 1:12)

- believing involves more than intellectual assent.- it involves “receiving HIM”.

2. “Receiving HIM” involves REPENTANCE. One cannot be saved HIM without repentance. To repent means to change one’s mind about God, about sin, etc. TURN from it in faith to God.

- we are born of will of God but not through natural descent. (John 1:13)- “not of blood” - not by inheritance

Page 28: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

- “nor of will of flesh” - self effort- “nor of will of man” - trusting some man or church- yes, I want to turn from things of the past and receive Christ, but how do I receive

HIM? (answer in Revelation 3:20)

5. An assurance… comes from the word of God:

- How do I know?

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If any of you hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with you. And you will eat with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

“Here is God’s witness. He has given us eternal life. That life is found in his Son. Those who belong to the Son have life. Those who do not belong to the Son of God do not have life.” (1 John 5:11-12)

CHAPTER 5Tools for evangelism - bridge illustration

1. Would you tell me what you think God is like? What are the characteristics of God?

2. Said God is Holy … by contrast, what is man like?

3. Draw in the two cliffs and say you will explain later.

4. You said what man is like; it is interesting that the Bible says this. Have you ever read the Bible? (ask whilst looking up the verse) There is a verse here that I would like to show you - Romans 3:23. Would you read it to me please? Enter on illustration. Who does this verse say has sinned? Who does this ‘all’ refer to? (make it really personal)

5. What do you think is the result of sin? (Ask whilst looking up verse) - Let’s look at Romans 6:23 and see what it says. - Would you like to read it please? (enter on illustration)- What would you say wages are? (payments or reward) What does God say the…

for sin is? (use the word they use)- How would you define death? (establish spiritual death) - A word which helps me to understand death is separation. (Isaiah 59:2)- Now explain the separation by the cliffs on the illustration.

6. Is death the end or what comes after death? This is an interesting question - let’s see what the Bible says in Hebrew 9:27. Would you read it please? Enter on illustration. “Appointed” - what does this mean? (a meeting) What, then, does the Bible say happens after death?

7. Can we look at the picture of man - Review - refer to illustration. That is the position man is in - not very good is it?

8. What are some things that man does to try and bridge this gap or separation? e.g. going to church, doing good works etc. (1 Samuel 16:7; Titus 3:5)

- Whichever verse you use, ask them to read it. - What does God say does not save us? It isn’t therefore what we do.

9. Now let’s see what God has done, as we have seen man can’t get across. Would you read Romans 5:8 please? Draw in bridge on illustration. What has God done?

10. Because this bridge is here, does it mean that everyone automatically crosses it? Let’s see what is involved in crossing the bridge - this is what is involved in becoming a Christian. (look up John 5:24) Would you read John 5:24 please? Enter on illustration. This verse says there are two things you need to do to be able to cross over this bridge, what are they?

- This verse also says that there are three things which result from hearing and believing; what are they? Enter on illustration.

Page 34: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

- “Has” - is this past, present or future?- What does it mean to “hear”? - explain hearing=understanding- “Believe” - What does it mean?

11. Let’s look at another verse which explains this as well. (John 1:12) Would you like to read John 1:12 please? (enter on illustration) What is another word to describe what it means to believe? (illustrate) Share testimony on how you received Christ and how you crossed the bridge.

12. Would you indicate on this illustration, by putting an X where you are, or which side you are on? (give him\her a pencil or pen) If they state God’s side, ask them how they become a Christian.

13. The Bible says that you became a Christian by hearing and believing\receiving, which this illustration shows. I have one more verse to illustrate what I mean. (Look up Revelation 3:20) Would you read it for me please?

- Who is this verse speaking about? - if unsure, refer to verse 21- What is he doing?- What door is this?- If he is knocking, what does he want to do?- If you were to open the door of your …, would he come in? - use in the space, the

word the used in answer to: “What door is this?”- How do you know that he would?- Do you know any reason why you wouldn’t want to open the door and ask Jesus

to come in?- If you were going to do this, how would you do it?- Would you like to do it now?

CHAPTER 6People in relation to God

We can say that in the world we have a four dominant classes of people in relation to God:

1. The Atheist says “There is no God.”2. The Agnostic adds “We don’t know whether there is a God or not.”3. The materialist says “We don’t need God.”4. The fool says “I wish there was no God.”

Running away from history:

b) Did Jesus ever live?

Bertrand Russell said he regarded the issue of whether Jesus ever lived as an open question. John Allegro has gone on record as saying “The Church’s misunderstanding of the origin of its cult began when it took the New Testament at its face value.”

Karl Marx was influenced by the German theologian Bruno Bauer, whose view was that the historical Jesus was a figment of the imagination of the evangelist Mark.

b) Are Christians running away from history?

- Historical evidence about Jesus:

- Tacitus in book XV chapter 44 writing in A.D. 114 tells us that the founder of the Christian religion Jesus Christ was put to death by Pontius Pilate in the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius.

- Pliny the younger wrote a letter to the Emperor Trajan on the subject of Christ and Christians, Book X-96.

- Josephus the Jewish Historian, writing in A.D. 90 has a short biographical note on Jesus who is called Christ in his ‘Antiquities’ Book XV111 chapter III section 3.

- The Babylonian Talmud makes mention of Jesus Christ.- Mohammed accepted Jesus as a Prophet.

Running way from science:

God or chance?

- Nothing x Nobody = Everything.- How much of the world’s knowledge do you possess?- The probability of life originating from accident is comparable to the probability of a

dictionary resulting from and explosion in a printing works.- Watch and Watchmaker.

Running away from inspiration:

Page 37: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

The Bible is the most wonderful of all the books in the world. It is the only one that claims to be the Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21) This claim is fully justified when we consider:

- Its fulfilled prophecies.- Its verification of our Lord.

These alone are quite sufficient for the purpose of ordinary personal evangelism, with perhaps the listed stated below:

- Its extraordinary unity and harmony.- Its amazing circulation.- Its high moral teachings.- Its unique completeness.- its appeal to all classes, everywhere.- Its LIFE CHANGING power evidenced whenever men and women of any age,

people or class believe and obey it.

Some books amuse, some instruct, some pollute, some elevate, but this one alone, the BIBLE, has power to transform a life and reproduce someone who is growing in the likeness of Christ.

When the number of surviving manuscripts of Scripture is compared with the

number of surviving manuscripts from other books of antiquity, the results are truly

astounding. The Bible stands unrivalled in its manuscripts attestation. No other document

of antiquity ever begins to approach such numbers.

CHAPTER 7The resurrection

Some objections to the resurrection:

a) Wrong tomb:John 20:1 Matthew 28:1Luke 24:1 Mark 16:1

b) Jesus only fainted:- Pilate was surprised that Jesus was dead already. (Mark 15:44-45)- After all the suffering could Jesus have rolled away the stone which took two

disciples to roll away?- He hung on the tree yet they said he had the strength to roll away the stone.

c) The Jews or Romans stole the body:- If they wanted to silence the disciples they could have produced the body.- Jesus walked a few miles to meet his disciples.

Biblical evidence for the resurrection of Christ:

Eye-witness accounts - He appeared to his disciples on 14 occasions:1. Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9; John 20:18)2. The women (Matthew 28:9)3. Simon Peter (Luke 24:34)4. Two disciples (Luke 24:13-31)5. The Apostles except Thomas (John 20:19-24)6. The Apostles with Thomas present (John 20:26)7. The Apostles as the Sea of Tiberias (John 21:1)8. The Apostles in Galilee (Matthew 28:16-17)9. About 500 brethren (1 Corinthians 15:6)10. All the Apostles (Luke 24:51; Acts 1:9; 1 Corinthians 15:7)11. James (1 Corinthians 15:7)12. Stephen (Acts 7:55)13. Paul (1 Corinthians 15:8)14. John (Revelation 1:12-13)

There are five graves of people who have influenced the world:

1. CONFUCIUS (c550-478 B.C.), Chinese philosopher whose sayings relating mainly to temporal and secular matters were recorded by his followers.

Confucianism - a system of cosmology (philosophy of the universe), politics, and ethics evolved in China during the Hen dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220). It regarded the emperor and the hierarchy of officials as divinely appointed, and the social relations as governed by the rules of Confucius.

Page 42: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

2. BUDDHA ‘Enlightened one’; name applied esp. to Siddhartha Gautama (c560 -c480 B.C.), son of the rajah of the Shakya tribe of India. As a young man he abandoned his home in Nepal and renounced the world; he practised and extreme asceticism, preached, and became the founder of one of the great Asiatic religions, BUDDHISM.

Buddhism, had been founded by the Buddha, orig. practised chiefly in India; but was diffused over China, Japan, and central and S.E. Asia. Its principal doctrines are: that suffering is desire - and that the suppression of desire, and consequently of suffering, can be obtained by discipline and ultimately rewarded by nirvana, which is extinction of individual existence and absorption into the supreme spirit.

3. MOHAMMED or MAHOMET (570-632), the prophet of ISLAM, whose utterances are preserved in the KORAN; born at Mecca and buried at Medina; declared himself the Prophet, c 611, and sought to turn his fellow-Arabs from the local Gods whom they then worshipped to the ancient religion of Abraham and other O.T. patriarchs and prophets, meeting with opposition in Mecca, fled to Medina in 622. This flight (the Hegira) is regarded as beginning the Mohammedan era and Islam.

4. MARX-KARL (1818-83), German revolutionary writer; settled in England after 1849; wrote ‘Das Kapital’ (1867). Criticised the capitalistic system as permitting a diminishing number of capitalists to appropriate the benefits of improved industrial methods, while the labouring class were left in increasing dependency and misery. The remedy Marx found in the total abolition of private property, to be effected by the class-war; when the community owned all means of production and all property, it would provide every individual with work and the means of subsistence. Birth of COMMUNISM.

5. JESUS CHRIST , invited men to trust in Him as they trusted in God (John 14:1). He said that love of Him was proof that one was a child of God (John 8:42). He affirmed that no one knew God but Himself and those to whom he revealed Him (Matthew 11:27). He accepted the confessions of Nathaniel and Peter that He was the Son of God. He said that whoever had seen Him has seen the Father (John 14:9-10). He affirmed that He had universal power (Matthew 28:18), and He asserted that God and He were one (John 10:30).

No one in the history, unless blasphemously, has ever made such claims - and if they are not true He Himself was the greatest of blasphemers.

All except Jesus Christ were defeated by death. Jesus Christ rose from the dead and defied death. Therefore He is supreme and can speak with final authority, for other religious and political leaders of the world cannot defeat death.

CHAPTER 8The Each One Reach One and Each One Teach One

The “Each One Reach One” and “Each One Teach One” is designed to encourage witness and teaching on a personal basis.

The pattern is to form a cell in a Church, school, university, and college or wherever Christian people meet together, to pray for the one you are reaching with the Gospel and for each other’s contact. Claiming God’s promise, “That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:19)

A prayer list of approximately 10 including your own contact and those of the nine or so others in the cell, will be prayed for each time the cell meets.

Progress reports will be encouraged to stimulate a prayerful attitude and concern for the lost.…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….…………………………………………….. ………………………………………………….

“Each one teach one” is to encourage the convert to become a disciple of Christ. This will involve teaching the person to pray and read the Word of God each day and share with him what the Lord has taught you.

To assist you in this we suggest you use one or all of the following:

1. The Navigators Topical Memory System which begins with the booklet “Beginning with Christ” followed by “Going on with Christ”. Two booklets to help you memorise God’s word.

2. Emmaus Bible Correspondence Course. The first two books - “What the Bible Teaches” and “Lessons in Christian Living”.

3. Project Evangelism Discipleship Manual.

CHAPTER 9Basic rules for personal evangelism

There are a number of guidelines regarding sharing Christ with others on a personal basis, that don’t fit easily under one heading. Just because they are practical rather than ‘spiritual’ don’t despise them. The Lord Jesus Himself gave His disciples practical training in evangelism. (Matthew 10:5-14)

NEVER ARGUE

If you win the argument, you’ll most likely lose the contact anyway. Remember, the other man is always entitled to his opinion.

NEVER INTERRUPT

If another Christian is involved in sharing Christ, never interrupt, no matter how bad a job you feel he’s making of it. He knows where he is heading even if you don’t, so all you’ll do is wreck his presentation. If he wants your help, he’ll ask for it.

NEVER GANG UP

This is particularly important in a Coffee Bar situation. Never gang up on a poor helpless non-Christian. Stick to one-to-one conversations.

BOY TO BOY ETC.

Wherever possible, talk to those of the same sex. It solves multitudes of problems especially regarding misunderstanding and follow up.

BE HONEST

If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t be afraid to admit it. You can’t be expected to be a walking encyclopaedia. But offer to find out and fix another time to meet when you can give your answer.

TIME IS IMPORTANT - TO HIM TOO!

You may have all the time in the world to talk about Jesus Christ. It may just be that he hasn’t. Not at that particular time at least! The Lord was never in a hurry, never rushed and was never late - as far as we know. The secret was that He was the Master of time - not time the master of Him.

Sometimes the person you are speaking to will seem uneasy or unwilling to become involved simply because it is an inconvenient time. Why not suggest that you meet again? Each time you meet him you could take just one of the basic truths of the Christian

Page 48: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

message. You don’t have to get excited and imagine you just must give him the whole works in four minutes flat.

All the links are needed in a chain!

Always remember that you may only be allowed to add one link in the chain of personal contacts that will eventually lead to someone's conversion. The first link is just as vital as the last!

In almost every instance there is a history of spiritual contacts and someone else who has been praying for them. Always try to leave that person with a clearer understanding of the Christian message than he had when he met you! Most of the time the personal evangelist for Christ is adding a new link in the chain except the last!

Spiritual economics

In this section we learn the secrets of effective evangelism as the early disciples, and then practise them! The first is persistent believing prayer for the one you want to see come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Secret two is a careful communication of the message of the Gospel in the language they understand.

The early disciples said, “and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word”. (Acts 6:4)

This briefly was the secret of their success. But you just can’t get by without prayer and the clear communication of the Word.

The very nature of spiritual economics demands that we must be the right kind of people using the right kind of methods.

Earn the right to speak

As far as your contact is concerned, you have absolutely no right to go trampling all over his pre-conceived ideas with your heavy evangelical hobnail boots. You must earn that right through friendship, sincerity and integrity.

Keep off red herrings

‘Cain’s wife’, ‘What about the Africans who’ve never heard?’, ‘Evolution’ etc. are usually put up as a smoke screen in order to avoid the real issue. Keep the conversation centred on your contact and leave these problems to later.

If you have to deal with these questions, bring the conversation back to a personal application as soon as you can. For instance, ‘we know that God is just, so He will deal with those who haven’t heard in a just way. (Genesis 18:25)

You might also like to try ‘If I answer your question satisfactorily, would you give your life to Christ?’ This will sort out those who just want to waste your time in arguments.

Page 49: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Give them time to think

Your message will no doubt come as a radically new proposition. Give plenty of time for someone to think it all out. Better to go too slowly than too fast.

Appearance

Bad breath, outlandish clothing and slurred speech will place the personal evangelist at a disadvantage.

Pray

There can be no substitute in the personal evangelist’s armoury. Before you can talk to men about God, you must talk to God about men. It is as simple but as vital as that.

‘Don’t find fault with a man’s bait, if he’s bringing in the fish.’ Anon

‘We have all eternity to celebrate the victories, but only a few hours before sunset to win them.’ Amy Carmichael

CHAPTER 10Christian communication in a changing world

“and set before them the Gospel that I preach” (Galatians 2:2)

The Christian position

The business world was for the most part quick to learn the art of communication, but unfortunately the church has lagged seriously behind.

We could have a thousand eloquent addresses or sermons, but we hardly take the trouble to find out if they have been fully understood. Yet, Scripture emphasises the need for understanding. It is not enough to transmit a message; it must be received and understood.

1. Nehemiah explains the law so that the hearers would understand. (Nehemiah 8:8)2. The hearer can fail to understand. (Matthew 13:19)3. Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch. (Acts 8:30)

The measure of change

We live in a changing world politically, socially, technically and in the religious field with the increase of Ancient religions and the Occult and evolution.

Words in communicating

The English vocabulary is larger than any other language in the world. 20,000 words are in regular use every day. Yet, there are not enough common words to express all the concepts that arise in ordinary speech and writing. All trades and professions have their own particular use of words. Theological words are no different. Most Christian magazines and evangelistic addresses use words that many of its readers or hearers would not have the slightest idea what they meant. To the unchurched many words used in sermons and gospel tracts are unknown. Therefore, use words that are know and understood.

Abstract words

In this area, there are many problems. For example:

LOVE JOY PEACE FEAR ANGER

Use common, short words whenever you can. Use the unusual, theological word only when the exact sense intended cannot be communicated by means of a common word, then give an explanation of the unusual word by means of a paraphrase. (Ecclesiastic 12:11)

Page 52: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Background

People come from different backgrounds, therefore they use different words to express themselves and if we do not come from their background, we will have difficulty in communicating the way of salvation.

Jesus used different words in John 3 to those in John 4, when He spoke to farmers and fishermen. He used words they would understand and parables of everyday things.

Paul in Acts 14 spoke to the Lycaonians of the earth, sea and seasons, but in Acts 17 to the Athenians he discoursed on the chapter of God and the resurrection.

Do not speak above people’s heads.

How to assess your audience

1. How much, if anything, do they know of the Bible?2. What is their background?3. What will their attitude be?

Sympathetic or critical? Know it all and be bored or know nothing and be puzzled?

CHAPTER 11Backsliders

It is generally agreed that many so-called backsliders never had anything to slide back from. Notwithstanding the plan of salvation they have never been born again. They may have done many things, prayed, joined a Church and struggled, yet they have not turned away from sin to God. Neither they have repented and received the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, or believe, known and rejoice that He has saved them from sin according to His Word. They have not appropriated Him for the up building of their spiritual life (John 1:2; John 5:11-12). Many have taken upon themselves forms of Christianity and by mere will power have presented a fairly good outward life for a while. Then being unable to hold out any longer and having no Christ within them to do the work for them they have fallen back into open sin. These have been MISCALLED backsliders and they should be dealt with like any other sinner.

There are, however, people who have known the Lord and have wandered from Him. Some are indifferent and do not seem to care to come back, others are tired of their wanderings and want to come back - the first are difficult, the second are easy to reach.

What is backsliding?

1. Turning the heart from God. (1 Kings 11:9)2. Forsaking God and living an unsatisfied barren life. (Jeremiah 2:5, 13:19)3. Turning the back and not the face to God. (Jeremiah 2:27-28)4. Forgetting God. (Jeremiah 2:32)5. Leaving the first love. (Revelation 2:4)6. Turning from the simplicity and purity that is in Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:3)7. Beginning in the Spirit and going on in the flesh. (Galatians 3:1-3)8. Turning from the Gospel of Grace (Acts 20:24) and the Spirit of grace (Hebrews

10:29) and going back to the law and works for justification (Galatians 5:4, 7).

How to deal with backsliders

Emphasise, Jeremiah 2:5 “This is what the Lord says: “What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.” It is astonishing how people deliberately turn their backs upon God and abuse Him because some person has wronged or slighted them.

Show their sad condition, “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” (Jeremiah 2:13)

They must repent (Revelation 2:4-5), confess (Jeremiah 14:7; 1 John 2:9), forsake sin and turn to God (Isaiah 55:7) and prepare to meet God (Amos 4:11-12).

Page 55: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

Many of the most touching and tender portions of the Bible are addressed to backsliders. Hosea is pre-eminently the backsliders’ book. (Isaiah 44:20-22) Read and note Jeremiah 3:12-14. Lovely verses to let backsliders to read are Jeremiah 6:16 and 24:7. Great verses for study for counsellors are Hosea 2:14-16, 11:8, 14:1-4 and Malachi 3:7. For faster and better orientation in your bible mark them and note them in your Bible.

EXAMPLES: David restored (Psalms 23:2), Peter restored (Matthew 26:75) and prodigal son restored (Luke 15:11-24). For more read John 21:15-17 and 2 Chronicle 15:4.

WARNING: “So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12)

So when counselling a backslider as kindly as you can, find out how it all began (may be need for restitution). Show him God is ready to forgive him (Hosea 14:4). In the story of prodigal son, show on what basis God will forgive (1 John 1:9; Proverbs 28:13) i.e. confessing sin and forsaking essential. Pray with him and show him how he can have victory (Jude 24).

EMPHASISE importance of daily Bible reading, prayer, fellowship, Bible teaching and regular attendance at a Christ-honouring Church.

CHAPTER 12Following up

The importance and aim of following up - persistent painstaking

It is vital importance of follow-up by personal contact. (John 21:15-17)

1. Remember

A great deal of time and money has been used to bring a person to a point of decision. We waste that if we do not follow the person faithfully.

2. Personal contact is always best

Always try to exchange address with your contact. Then try to organise a meeting as soon as possible and preferably within twenty-four hours. If you are unable to meet soon, contact him/her and arrange a new meeting. A good means of re-introduction is to take round and invitation to another meeting or a helpful book or piece of literature.

3. Writing emails or texts

When you have to write to a contact or enquire, remember:a) Do not “over-sermonise” in your emails/texts - always put in something of “normal

interest” and show an interest in your contact’s everyday life too.b) Do be faithful in your writing - email back without overwhelming your contact into

thinking that a reply will always be there.c) Parents may read a younger contact’s letters, so always be careful how you

phrase things and ask your contact whether his/her family are keeping well, etc.d) Enclose literature and helpful links when relevant.e) Keep writing in a friendly manner at regular intervals, even when there was no

initial reply.

4. Telephone calls

Usually the best is keeping them short and always state precisely who you are.

The aim of follow-up:

The aim is to encourage and help the enquirer into a place of Christian maturity, blessing and fruitfulness. We want (and the Lord wants) the decision to be the gateway to discipleship.

You are dealing with a spiritual baby who needs:

1. Food - encourage him/her to read the Bible. Go through one or two of the Project Evangelism Discipleship manuals and quiet time worksheet with him/her.

Page 58: projectevangelismdotorg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view2017. 5. 3. · Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is

2. Air - explain to him/her the importance of prayer and start to pray with him/her as you get to know each other.

3. Family life - bring (not just invite) contact to fellowship meetings. The Saturday night ‘get together’ type meeting is especially helpful to young converts and useful as an introduction to the ‘unchurched’. Try to recommend the Prayer Meeting and Bible Sessions eventually and encourage contact to go to the church to which you belong or the church that is bible based.

4. Exercise - lovingly exhort your contact to tell others about his/her conversion and to increasingly put evangelism as his/her number one occupation. Point out that he/she can invite others to evangelistic meetings. Encourage him/her to pray for personal friends and family as a start. Point out the need for wisdom and grace.

5. Separateness - help contact to see that he/she a ‘new life’ in Christ and needs to live separated from the world to receive it fully. (1 John 1:6-7)

6. Befriending - as your contact goes on and grows, it is only natural that various problems, doubts, temptations and trials will arise. As well as teaching him/her to put these before the Lord in prayer, it is essential that you are a friend-humanly, and a parent-spiritually. Your contact does not want to now a mere ‘text-producing-sermoniser’, but someone to whom he/she can turn with any problem, etc. Show interest in contact’s day to day life.

7. Support - remember to pray for him/her daily and be ready to give practical help when needed.
