We are problem solvers who work together with confidence to strive for growth and excellence. We have had a busy couple of weeks at school. Thank you for the fantastic turn out at our welcome BBQ. It was great to see so many parents and carers here to hear what is happening in the grades, have a look in the classrooms, enjoy a sausage and have a chat with others. We really lucked out with the weather as well! A special thank you to Woolworths in Mid Valley for donating the bread for the evening. We had a terrific day on Wednesday at our School Athletics, with lots of parents attending to watch. The students showed enthusiasm and resilience as they participated in all events. It was great to see them cheering their house or class mates on as well. The Grade 6 versus Teachers race was watched by the whole school with the teachers coming a close second! A special thank you to those parents who helped us run events, we would have struggled to get through everything without your support and time. Congratulations to our age group champions and to Green House as the winning team. If you would like to keep up to date with events and see photos of what is happening at our school, remember to find our school page on Facebook and like it! It is the one with our school logo. School Council for 2021 It is with pleasure I can announce our school councillors for 2021: Parent Representative: Nicole McKenzie, Adam Leslie, Sam Armstrong, Bradley Dean, Rebecca Kilday and Chelsey Alesi DET Representatives: Gillian Connolly, Dale Simmons, Mark Atherton and Jacinta Milner Community Representatives: Krystle Ing with a one year position still available I welcome our new members and thank them for nominating for positions. Building Refurbishment The process for planning the refurbishment or rebuild of the administration building and toilet block has commenced with architects attending a walk through last week prior to interviews next week to be given the tender. There has been some early discussions around whether our funding will enable a rebuild or refurbishment, please be assured I am working with the Department and the VSBA (Victorian School Building Authority) to get the best outcomes for our school. I will endeavour to keep you as informed as I can. Drop off Zone and Pedestrian access Thank you for using the smaller gate near the shed as the pedestrian access point. This has helped us to monitor student and parent safety as cars and buses navigate the car park and drop off zone.

and curious. We are problem solvers who work together with confidence to strive for growth and excellence.

We have had a busy couple of weeks at school. Thank you for the fantastic turn out at our welcome BBQ. Respect, Responsibility, Resilience

Hazelwood North Primary School is committed to child safety and upholding the Child Safe Standards

Road Safety Some of you may have noticed we had an OHS representative from the Department attend pick up time last week to review the safety concerns we have with traffic management, particularly after school. She will be writing a report and forwarding it to me with recommendations of how to make this time of day safe for our school community. Mobile (and device) Policy We have a number of students who are bringing mobile phones and smart watches to school. As part of the Department’s policy we have a school policy which can be found on our website. As part of this policy all student phones, including electronic devices that enable messaging or internet access, are to be handed in to the office at the start of the day (where they are stored in a lockable cabinet) and collected at the end of the day. Can we please ask for your support in not sending these devices to school with your child unless it is essential? Thank you for your cooperation with this. Values Award

We are respectful We are responsible We are resilient

At assembly last week we had the first presentation of our new values awards. They are respect, responsibility and resilience. We also have an award that covers all three values, which we are calling the Triple R Superstar award. This will be awarded to those students who demonstrate all three values consistently. Congratulations to our fortnightly Values Award recipients: F/1 MJ – Chase for Responsibility F/1 X – Cooper for Resilience 1/2 M – Willow for Resilience 3/4A – Christian for Responsibility 3/4 K – Frankie for being a Triple R Superstar! 5/6 AJ – Ethan for Responsibility 5/6 S – Lucy for Respect STEAM – Ella M for Challenge Keep smiling and take care, Gillian Connolly I Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this land where I work and live, and pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging. I extend that Acknowledgement to all other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia

PJ Day On the Friday 26th of March we will be having a PJ day to raise money for The Royal Children Hospital. If you wish to wear PJ’s could you please kindly donate a gold coin, but if you do wish to bring more that would be humbly accepted.

Please do not feel pressured to wear PJ’s - you can also wear casual clothes or even school uniform. We would also like to state please wear appropriate and sun smart PJ’s/clothes to school. So, get ready to have loads of fun on the 26th of March!

Hazelwood North Primary School Reading Newsletter

We are trialling a new addition to our school newsletter where we are featuring

‘All Things Reading!’

At the end of the newsletter we will include information about reading for pleasure, different resources you may like to use at home, photos of reading occurring at school, and facts about the overall benefits of reading! A Free Resource To Try: Storyline Online have over 50 stories. Check out Arnie the Doughnut read by Chris O’Dowd – he does great voices! Go to https://www.storylineonline.net/ Don’t forget that audiobooks, listening to someone else read to you, and reading by yourself or with a sibling are all types of reading that you can write in your reading diary. Reading for enjoyment: What is this? Reading for pleasure or enjoyment means that students have choice over the types of books that they read. Their purpose for reading that book is purely to enjoy the content! Reading for pleasure can result in increased empathy, improved relationships with others, and reductions in the symptoms of depression and improved wellbeing. The relationship between reading for pleasure and wellbeing is particularly interesting, with evidence showing a correlation between reading for pleasure regularly and lower levels of stress and depression.
