Title : Certain problems related to classes of analytic functions and

applications Speaker : Dr. Rabha Waell Ibrahim (Lecture Position Applicant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, University of Malaya) Date : 16 February 2011 (Wednesday)

Time : 3pm – 4pm Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

The existence and uniqueness of univalent solutions for fractional differential equations in complex domain are established. The existence is found by using Schauder fixed point theorem while the uniqueness is found by using the Banach fixed point theorem. Furthermore, by employing the concept of subordination and superordination, the relations among these solutions are illustrated and discussed in the unit disk. Next by making use the generalized hypergeometric function, namely Fox-Wright function, a generalized integral operator involving Noor integral operator is posed and studied. New subclasses of analytic functions containing the generalized integral operator are defined and established. Moreover, some sandwich results are obtained. By using Jack’s Lemma, the conditions on some classes of normalized functions in the unit disk are posed. In addition applications are introduced. The functions of fractional power of various types are considered in the unit disk. Generalized family of convolution or Hadamard product for these functions is introduced. Some applications of these classes containing fractional integral operators are illustrated. Furthermore, some classes of multivalent analytic functions of fractional power are suggested and used to define generalized multiplier operator. This operator is a generalization of Cho operator. Partial sums for functions of fractional power are suggested. New classes of meromorphic functions of fractional power in the punctured unit disk by using their partial sums are defined. The conditions under which the partial sums of the Libera integral operator of functions in the class are also in the same class are determined.

A linear operator for analytic functions of fractional power is also defined. This operator corresponding to the Dziok-Srivastava linear operator. Inclusion and convolution properties of classes of analytic functions containing this operator are established. Also, the Ces´aro means of functions of fractional power are constructed and studied some of its geometric properties. Finally concave functions of fractional power are defined. Coefficient inequalities for new classes involving these functions are posed. Sˇalˇagean operator for functions of fractional power is defined. Other properties of classes involving this operator are studied.

Title : Calculus: A Modern Approach Speaker : Prof. Horst Reinhard Beyer Instituto de Fisica y Matematicas Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Mexico Date : 13 April 2011 (Wednesday) Time : 10am – 11am Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract The main focus of the talk is a modern approach to the teaching of calculus, as is used in the speaker's book “Calculus and Analysis: A Combined Approach”. This approach better enables students to progress to more advanced courses and applications. It uses key tools for overcoming deficits in standard calculus education, consisting in the use of basic modern mathematical language and elaborate motivations of the mathematical concepts utilizing Otto Toeplitz's famous "genetic approach” to calculus. For instance, in the book, complete descriptions of Archimedes solutions of classical problems are used for motivational introductions.

Title : Markov chain Monte Carlo Algorithms for the Bayesian Logistic

Regression Model Speaker : Dr. Dobrin Marchev (School of Mathematics and Statistics,

University of Sydney) Date : 06 April 2011 (Wednesday) Time : 10am – 11am Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract We consider the Bayesian logistic regression model with flat prior on the coefficients. More specifically, we use the normal mixture representation of the logistic distribution to derive a new Markov chain Monte Carlo method for exploring the posterior density of the parameters. This new algorithm is further improved by adding an extra step in the sampling scheme, thus making it a special case of Hobert and Marchev (2008) Haar PX-DA algorithm, which is known to be more efficient than the standard approach. The two methods are compared on a real dataset, where we demonstrate empirically that the Haar algorithm’s Markov chain mixes much better.

Title : Pricing of American Call Options Speaker : Ms Beh Woan Lin PhD Candidate, Institute of Mathematical Sciences University of Malaya Date : 15 April 2011 (Friday) Time : 11am – 12noon Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract A numerical method based on the regression and numerical integration is proposed to evaluate the prices of the American options. Consider the American basket call option in the case when there are N underlying assets and the number of possible exercise times prior to maturity is finite and the vector of asset prices is modeled as a Levy process. In the proposed method, we make use of the distribution for the vector of asset prices at a given time t in the future to determine the “important” values of the vector of asset prices of which option values should be determined. In determining the option values at time t, we first perform a numerical integration along the radial direction in the N-dimensional polar coordinate system. The value thus obtained is expressed as a function of the polar angles and another numerical integration is performed over the polar angles to obtain the continuation value. The larger value of the continuation value and the immediate exercise value will then be the option value. A method is also proposed to estimate the standard error of the computed American option price.

Title : The Analysis of Categorical Data Speaker : Ms Fam Pei Shan Ph.D. Candidate, Institute of Mathematical Sciences University of Malaya Date : 21 April 2011 (Thursday) Time : 11am – 12noon Venue : DKM4, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

Consider an lcr ×× contingency table that cross-classifies a multinomial sample

on three categorical responses. When there is no three-factor interaction, likelihood ratio test is often used to test the hypothesis concerning a specific two-factor interaction. Presently we use an alternative test to test the hypothesis. It is found that the size of the alternative test under the null hypothesis tends to be closer to the target value than that of the likelihood ratio test.

Logistic function is an S-shape function used frequently for analyzing the dependence of binary response on explanatory variables. Presently we model the binary response using a family of S-shape functions which includes the logistic function as a special case. Bootstrap procedure, normal approximation and calibrated bootstrap are used to construct confidence intervals for the individual parameters in the resulting model. It is found that the bootstrap confidence interval and the confidence interval based on normal approximation have comparable performance, and calibration procedure tends to improve the coverage probability of the bootstrap confidence interval.

We also propose a new model for multicategory ordinal data. Similar procedures are also used to construct confidence intervals for the individual parameters in the model. The performance of the resulting confidence intervals is found to be similar to those of the confidence intervals constructed for the case of binary response.

Abstract

The classical birthday, coupon collector and hatcheck problems are investigated with special reference to the effect of

(1) eliminating exchangeability assumptions, and (2) introducing the possibility of imperfect recognition. The variability ordering of

majorization is found to be useful in gauging the effect of inhomogeneity of the component probabilities in the three problems.

Title : Hidden truncation in non-Gaussian settings Speaker : Prof. Barry C. Arnold University of California, Riverside Date : 22 April 2011 (Friday) Time : 10am – 11am Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

The Azzalini skew-normal model can be viewed as having arisen from hidden truncation applied to a classical bivariate normal model. If instead we begin with other bivariate distributions and apply hidden truncation, some surprises are encountered.

In some cases hidden truncation may yield no model augmentation. In other cases, interesting new skewed models are encountered. In addition, alternative skewing mechanisms will be discussed. These lead to an intriguing conjectured characterization of the normal distribution.

Title : On the sequence theoretic definition of an extensive game Speaker : Prof. Shravan Luckraz Department of Economics, Bond University, Australia

(with Prof. Jeffrey Kline, School of Economics, University of Queensland, Australia)

Date : 4 May 2011 (Wednesday) Time : 3pm – 4pm Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract While an extensive game due to Kuhn (1953) starts with an abstract graph theoretical tree based on a set of vertices as the substructure of the game, a more recent approach to extensive games involves starting with a set of sequences of tangible elements like actions (Osborne-Rubinstein (1994)) or information pieces and actions (Kaneko-Kline (2008)). In this paper, we start with a general set of sequences and ask what properties are needed to make the set of sequences an appropriate substructure for extensive games. We find that any sequence structure game can be transformed to two distinct set theoretic games and we give the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the two are equivalent up to isomorphism.

Title : Some recent development on Markov models of DNA

substitution Speaker : Dr. Yap Von Bing Department of Statistics & Applied Probabillity, National University of Singapore, Singapore

Date : 9 May 2011 (Monday) Time : 11am – 12noon Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract DNA bases undergo a slow process of substitution, which is often modelled as a

reversible continuous-time Markov chain. Examples of such processes will be

described, and the problem of calculating the transition matrix from the infinitesimal

generator will be considered. A formula will be presented which works for most models,

without having to diagonalise a matrix. If time permits, I will describe the problem of

parameterising substitution processes on triplets of DNA bases. No knowledge of

molecular biology is assumed, and only an elementary knowledge of Markov chains is

required.

Title : Queue Length and Waiting Time Distributions in a System

of M Dependent Queues Speaker : Ms Soo Huei Ching PhD Candidate Institute of Mathematical Sciences, University of Malaya

Date : 20 May 2011 (Friday) Time : 11am – 12noon Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract Consider a system of M Hypo(2)/Hypo(2)/1 queues of which the dependence

relation is specified via an interaction scheme. Two types of interaction scheme are

considered. We proposed a method for deriving the stationary joint queue length

distribution, and the stationary waiting time distribution, of a customer seeking service

in a given queue. The proposed method has also been adapted to find the stationary

joint queue length distribution in a system of two dependent Hypo(2)/Hypo(2)/c/c

queues. The numerical results found by using the proposed method agree well with

those based on simulation.

Date : 25 August 2011 (Thursday) Time : 10am – 11am Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

This work focuses on the material balance equation governing the lithium-ion

concentration in an electrolyte/solution phase of a lithium-ion battery. The main objective

of this work is to obtain the solution for this governing equation in order to simulate the

concentration profile of a lithium-ion battery during discharge process. These equations

are solved using the Theta formulation from Finite Difference Method (FDM) based on the

relevant initial and boundary conditions. Three schemes are being considered in this

Theta formulation, that is explicit scheme (α = 0), implicit scheme (α = 1) and Crank

Nicolson scheme (α = 0.5). The best schemes will be identified using several statistical

Title : Statistical Based Measure for Performance Indicator in

Some Image Processing Problems Speaker : Mr. Chang Yun Fah PhD Candidate, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, University of Malaya

Date : 4 August 2011 (Thursday) Time : 3pm – 4pm Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

The ability to compare or relate two digital images may be useful in developing

performance evaluation algorithms. This thesis investigates the use of a particular

correlation measure, 2

pR developed from the multidimensional unreplicated linear

functional relationship (MULFR) model with single slope, as a measure or indicator of

performance. This MULFR model is an extended version of the ULFR model

introduced by Adcock in 1877. A literature survey was carried out showing that 2

pR has

not been used before. The coefficient 2

pR was investigated in its ability to handle the

issues of non-perfect reference image, multiple image attributes and combining image

local-global information simultaneously. This survey is followed with the maximum

likelihood estimation of parameters and a brief discussion of some theoretical

properties of 2

pR .

To investigate robust properties of 2

pR , an extensive simulation exercise was then

carried out. Promising results, thus far, motivate the use of 2

pR is two image analysis

problems; firstly a character recognition problem and secondly a particular data

compression problem. In a handwritten Chinese character recognition problem, the 2

pR

achieved the highest recognition rates even the pre-processing stage is removed from

the recognition system. A substantial reduction of processing time, approximately

40.36% to 75.31%, was achieved using 2

pR . In JPEG compression problem, 2

pR is

used as a measure of image quality which in turn indicates the performance of the

compression method. It is shown that 2

pR performs well and satisfies the monotonicity,

accuracy and consistency properties when perfect reference image was used. 2

pR was

also shown to perform better than some frequently used similarity measures when

imperfect reference image was used..

Title : Public Health Care Facility Planning in Malaysia: Using

Location Allocation Models Speaker : S. Sarifah Radiah Shariff PhD Candidate, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, University of Malaya

Date : 25 August 2011 (Thursday) Time : 3pm – 4pm Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

In many developing nations, the locations of public facilities are generally taken

locally by government officers or by local elected leaders or by both. In Malaysia, the

location of public health care are determined using some guidelines that were

developed based on experience or some statistical information. There is still lack of

formal analysis being carried out. As a result the decisions can very often be far from

optimal. This study attempts to develop some mathematical location-allocation models

for the locations of the public health care facilities in Malaysia. Two basic location

allocation models with two different objectives are studied: The p-median problem and

the Maximal Covering Location Problem (MCLP). We designed several solution

methods by considering the un-capacitated, capacitated constraints and multiple

objectives. The first part of the study focuses on the systems with un-capacitated

facilities. The public healthcare facilities in Telok Panglima Garang(TPG), Selangor are

taken as a case study to apply the models, and analyze the past and current location

decisions.

Page 21: Seminar ISM 2011-04 0413-Beyer series/Past...INSTITUT SAINS MATEMATIK UNIVERSITI MALAYA SIRI KOLOKIUM A linear operator for analytic functions of fractional power is also defined.

The models are extended to the capacitated case where a bigger district of Kuala

Langat, Selangor is considered. These models which are in form of mixed integer

programming models are solved using commercial optimization software CPLEX 10.2.

The results from CPLEX are observed to violate some of facilities’ constraint, thus

making the solutions infeasible. A heuristic based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is

proposed and some computational analysis is carried out to gauge the performance of

the existing facilities. In the third part of the study, a new model that simultaneously

considers the p-median and the MCLP is proposed. The model is solved using a

weighted sum multi objective approach that simultaneously minimizes the average

distance traveled (p-median) and maximizes the coverage percentage (MCLP). The

data set are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the model. The fourth part

concentrates on the development of a dynamic location model that incorporates a time

factor. A sensitivity analysis which considers the future increase in demand and the

need for new health care facilities is also carried out to assist the relevant authority to

make proper planning of health care systems in Selangor and in Malaysia in general.

Abstract

In this talk, we introduce quasigroup and loop theory - a generalisation of group theory.

A quasigroup is a binary system equipped with unique division. It differs from a group mainly in

the lack of associativity. If a quasigroup further contains an identity element, then it is called a

loop. We shall discuss various classes of quasigroups and loops which satisfy some "weak

form of associativity", for example, power associativity, diassociativity, Moufang identity, Bol

identity etc. Towards the end of the talk, emphasis will be given on Moufang loops, their

properties, known results and open problems.

Abstract

The exponential growth of available biological data has caused bioinformatics to

be rapidly moving towards a data-intensive, computational science. As a result, the

computational power needed by bioinformatics applications is growing exponentially as

well. The recent emergence of accelerator technologies has made it possible to achieve

an excellent improvement in execution time for many bioinformatics applications,

compared to current general-purpose platforms. In this paper, we demonstrate how the

PlayStation® 3, a gaming console powered by the Cell Broadband Engine, can be used

as a computational platform to accelerate the Smith-Waterman algorithm for sequence

alignment. For large datasets, our implementation on the PlayStation® 3 provides a

significant improvement in running time compared to other implementations such as

SSEARCH, Striped Smith-Waterman and CUDA. The results from our experiments

demonstrate that the PlayStation® 3 can be used as an efficient low cost computational

platform for high performance sequence alignment applications.

Aligarh, India Date : 14 December 2011 (Wednesday) Time : 3pm – 4pm Venue : MM3, Institute of Mathematical Sciences

Abstract

It is a known fact that differential equations form the most important branch of

modern mathematics, and in fact, occupy the position at the centre stage of both pure and

applied mathematics. This is obvious because the mathematical understanding of any

physical situation usually consists of the following steps:

1. Understanding the various parameters of the situation and then making a rough

mathematical model;

2. Posing a corresponding precise mathematical problem, and analyzing it, trying to find

an exact or approximate solution;

3. Comparing the result with the experimental data to check the validity of the model.

It is also obvious that differential equations form the basis of applied mathematics. As far

as their role in pure mathematics is concerned, attempts to get their exact solutions lead

to the existence theorems and theory of functions, differential geometry and deep results

in functional analysis.

It is almost impossible to describe all the roles played by differential equations in pure and

applied mathematics in a single lecture; it is therefore, we confine ourselves to the

applications of differential equations in some important branches of medical sciences. In

fact, here we shall be concerned that how the differential equations can be used

(i) to estimate the time of death of a murder victim;

(ii) to describe the transplantation of human organ;

(iii) to describe the intravenous feeding of glucose;

(iv) to deal with the problems in epidemiology;

(v) to describe the problems in cardiology; and

Title : Green’s Vertices and Complexity for Specht Modules Speaker : Dr. Lim Kay Jin (Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science,

National University of Singapore) Date : 16 December 2011 (Friday) Time : 3pm – 4pm Venue : MM3, INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Abstract In this talk, I will briefly go through the background of the representation theory of finite groups. The interesting notion introduced are the Green’s vertices and complexity for modules. These notion measure the distance of the modules from being projective modules. We quickly specialize our attention to the case of symmetric groups whose representation theory has been well-developed. We shall focus on the Specht modules, an important class of modules of the symmetric groups, and their complexity and vertices will be studied.
