You will find there a geolo- gical and mineralogical exposition that will take you to the colourful world of minerals. You will learn about the tech- nology of gems working and see historical and contem- porary jewels which have been created since 1984 at the international jewellery symposiums in Turnov. precious stones, particularly of Bohemian garnets. In the 19th century, cut glass imitations were exported to many countries around the world. Bohemian garnets were also an excellent export commodity.In the last third of the 19th century industrial stone -cutting workshops for precious stones were also set up in Turnov. To educate experts in the working of precious stones, a vocational school, now known as the Secondary School of Applied Arts, was established in 1884. In 1886, a muse-um was founded in Turnov, with one department speciali-zed in gems and jewellery.

THE PRESENT OF TURNOV STONE -CUTTINGStone -cutting and jewellery tradition made Turnov famous as a town of the precious stone. In 1953, the Gar-net Cooperative of Artistic Production was founded which became world -famous due to its garnet jewels.� e development of modern jewellery from various mate-rials is welcomed and admired. � ere are a  number of workshops and various companies in the town and its sur-roundings, dealing with the cutting and working of preci-ous stones. Various synthetic crystals for advanced tech-nologies are produced here and they are the world’s top in their � elds.

� e Garnet cooperative is the largest producer of original jewels with Bohemian garnets. It was established by the uni� ca-tion of smaller goldsmith companies in 1953, it is the owner of the mines for Bohemi-an garnets and the owner of the mining right.

People have been attracted by precious stones for centu-ries. � e attribute “precious“ does not mean a price tag only but it also highlights the exceptional features of the stone which include beautiful colour, light refraction, shine and hardness. In the surroundings of Turnov, multicoloured quartzes, jaspers and agates can be found even today. � e � rst worked precious stones appeared as early as six thousand years ago. � e speci� c cra� of precious stone cutters has been maintained in Turnov and its surroundings until these days.

HISTORY OF STONE -CUTTING IN TURNOVIn the Middle Ages, the most prominent site was the Kozá-kov hill, wrapped up in legends. � e story about a  little shepherd who throws at a  stray cow a  stone of a higher value than the animal itself might go back to the times of Rudolph II.� e term stone -cutting includes not only the working of natural precious stones but also the cutting of precious stones imitations from special multicoloured glass. In the Turnov region, the so -called glass composition was cut, which according to a legend began to be produced by the Fišer brothers who had learned this cra� in Venetian glassworks in Italy.In the 18th century, the focal point of stone -cutting produ-ction in the Turnov region was the � ring of the glass com-position and its cutting. In order to ensure the quality of the cra� , a stone -cutting fraternity called the Fraternity of Gem Cutters’ Free Cra� was established in 1715. During the 19th century, the production of composition glass was relocated to the Jizerské Mountains and the Turnov sto-necutters began to devote more attention to the cutting of
