The Royal Route

What is the Royal Route?• It is the most beautiful sightseeing route in

the city of Prague

What does the Royal Route mean?

It is a route that the Czech kings passed

in a procession to their coronation

in the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague

Castle, which was the spiritual centre of the

kingdom.

Where did the route start?

• in Royal Court – used to be a comfortable residence for rullers since the peak period of the Middle Ages

• on the place of current Municipal House in Republic Square

Celetná Street• links the Republic Square with the Old

Town Square• one of the oldest streets in Prague• in cellars of many buildings there are the

foundations of Romanesque and Gothic buildings

Old Town Square

• the large square in the centre of the Old Town• it used to be a wide marketplace • culturally and historically significant place • the place of many celebrations, knights’ tournaments,

gatherings and bloody executions

Malé Square - Karlova Street - Křížovnické Square

Karlova Street

• used to be an important business connection the marketplace of Old Town Square with the stone Judith Bridge

• nowadays – the most frequented tourist routes through Prague.

Charles Bridge• the stone bridge with 16 arches built in 1357

• decorated with excellent 31 sculptures

• most of them belong to the best works of Central-European Baroque sculpture

• a trio of protective towers is a part of the bridge complex

Malostranské Square

• it used to be a marketplace• the square was divided by the complex of St.

Nicholas Church and Jesuits College• the lower part has a civil character with tram traffic• the upper part became a calm aristocratic area

Nerudova Street

• it used to be much narrower street with timber beans on the steeply sloped ground 

• named after Jan Neruda who was born and lived there• it is unique with historic porches, doors, locks and

door signs
