Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time
Have you ever been in a situation when you know in your heart what needs to be done but you do not want to do it? I am sure each and every one of us have had that experience. The world with our desires and our needs press us to violate what we know should be our response. We “rationalize” our responses and fail to hear God who is calling and urging us to do what is right. It is the effect of free will coupled with Original Sin. This gift from God, free will, allows us to love and in return to be loved; however, it also negatively allows us to place our priorities solely on ourselves separating us from the Divine. Paradoxically, without free will, there can be no sacrificial or agape love – no intimate relationship with God. This type of love is true love. It is the love that reflects the essence of the Divine. It is the foundation of both human and Divine love. It is this love that is the theme of today’s liturgy. For without Agape, there is no hope, no spark of life and light for a world engulfed in darkness and sin.
In the first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses is calling his people to listen to the Lord and to obey Him. They are called to love Him. The prophet explains that by following the Commandments, which are not beyond their reach, they will grow in Divine love in union and prosperity with their God. Moses simplifies the process. He tells them that they only need to listen and follow with their hearts. The prophet reminds them that God speaks from within their very being. He is not aloof or remote. He is omnipresent and within. It is the loving heart that makes possible the fruition of agape love – the only true love.
In the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians, Paul expands and explains this dimension of God in and through Christ. The Apostle to the Gentiles reveals God through the Divine Icon, Christ. The invisible God is reflected in the image of Jesus for whom all things were created. As such, it is Christ who is the firstborn and the inheritor of all. He is the image and source of all. It is through Jesus that we are born, sustained and discover eternal life. Once again, Paul reminds us that we must listen to the Word and enshrine it in our hearts in order to inherit the promise of Christ.
Finally, in today’s Gospel according to Luke, Jesus is asked what a person must do to inherit eternal life. Once again, the answer is simple – listen to your heart and love God and your fellow man as you would yourself. To illustrate
his point, Christ relates the story of the Good Samaritan. This account drives home the point that often times human beings ignore their hearts due to their involvement in today’s world. In this story, the people who should normally assist the battered man walk on by without so much of a glance. They ignore what is clearly before them due to “more important business”. Here the hated Samaritan answers with his heart and gives assistance; thus, the God of love and mercy is clearly with him. Jesus is transparent. He desires His
followers to respond with what they know they should do and not let worldly interference and distractions overcome their response. In doing this, they will be loving God and their fellow man with their whole heart, being, strength and mind; thereby, they will inherit eternal life.
How many of us allow ourselves to be distracted by the world? We let our pride and greed interfere with the heart. How often do we walk by a person in need thinking someone else will deal with it? How often do we put the world before God and even ourselves by finding excuses NOT to receive the sacraments? Are we too busy for reconciliation with God or too tired to attend the Eucharistic Banquet? Often, it appears that we allow the world to blare its message of mammon and pride. We permit it to distract us from our own spiritual growth and life that the Divine wishes to bestow upon us. It is sad that we rationalize ourselves out of using the heart to praise God and help our fellow man. This same rationalization destroys us and our planet leaving in its wake a humanity robbed of God. Holy Mother the Church calls us today to declutter our lives. She reminds us that to love God and our neighbor we must respond with our hearts. If we continue to rationalize our lives, we alienate ourselves from the Divine and lose what God has planned for us. Listen closely and hear the whisper of the Lord so that your priorities may be focused on the Divine.

SAINT OF THE WEEK:
OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
July 16
In the 13th century in northern Israel, a group of hermits
gathered and became the "Brothers of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel". They celebrated masses and office in honor of
Mary. Great saints among the Carmelites including Saint
Teresa of Avila, Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and Saint
John of the Cross, who promoted devotion to Our Blessed
Mother. There is a tradition that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a
Carmelite, and gave him a scapular telling him to promote devotion to it.
The scapular, which one can acquire today, symbolizes Mary's protection
and reminds us of the gospel's call to prayer and penance. It's also helps
us to remember we all belong to the family of God.
