Could it be environment, energy, excellence, education? At Haywood Elementary, the E in E-class stands for empathy. When Miss Elizabeth Lovell’s first- grade E-class students learned that their teacher assistant, Mrs. Cheryl McDaniel, had lost everything in the recent flood, they went home, talked about her loss with their families and together decided to do something to help “Miss Cheryl.” This group of caring students and their parents donated a total of $270 to present to Miss Cheryl to help make things a little easier. “I was so surprised and so thankful for what the boys and girls and their parents did for me. I will never forget their kindness,” Miss Cheryl said. “We are all so proud of all of the students at HES,” Mrs. Tracy Riddle added. Students learn about giving ES students enjoy annual Field Day ES had their field day recently. The theme was in honor of the 2010 World Cup soccer games. Each class represented a country and had to research important facts about the country and create a replica of the country’s flag. They had their opening ceremonies in the gym and presented their flags and facts. The third and fourth graders pose with their class flags representing their country in the upcoming World Cup games. Students enjoyed physical activity competitions such as kickball and tug of war. Thank you Leona! What a fun day. We had a special guest for our summer reading program - Leona Lion from “Between the Lions.” It was so nice to have her here with us. She loved the stories that Mrs. Sherry read and really enjoyed all the hugs she got from the kids. Thank you again, Leona. And thank you WLJT Channel 11 for arranging her visit with us. Hey kids, keep up with your book logs. Ya’ll are doing great so far. For every ten books, or 100 pages, you get to choose a prize from the prize box. Let’s Make a Splash – Read!!! Remember that we have 11 AM Family Story Hour and 2 PM Group Story Hour today, June 17. We will be having a special program next week, June 24 with the Forked Deer Players Puppet Show at 1 PM. We still need empty paper towel rolls for a craft project. If you have any, please bring them to the library. Thanks! There is a Summer Reading program for you as well. There are no registrations or book logs required. All you have to do is fill out a “How I Liked This Book” form found at the circulation desk, and drop it in the drawing box for each book you read for the month. We will have a drawing on the last day of each month (June and July) so let’s get reading!!! Toddler Time will be offered Monday, June 21 at 11 AM. We will have stories, coloring, and a light snack. All toddlers and their caregivers are invited to join us. We love Toddler Time at the Library. Lunch & Learn will be offered Wednesday, June 23 at noon in the Library Meeting Room. Our guest speaker will be Shalanza Hawkins who is running for County Clerk. Please remember to bring a lunch, the library will provide drinks and dessert. Happy Reading! Corner Corner Katherine Horn Joyce A. Castellaw of Haywood County was named to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga dean’s list for the spring semester. Students who make a 3.2 or higher semester grade point average are awarded the honor. Haywood resident makes dean’s list After 40 years of service to Haywood County children, Miss Clara Richardson is retiring. “It won’t be the same without Miss Clara,” Principal Tracy Riddle said at the reception on Monday afternoon in the Haywood Elementary library. “If you have never met Miss Clara, or seen her with her children, you will not realize what a great loss this is to education and Haywood County. With a quiet dignity, a sense of humor, and unconditional love, Miss Clara taught students, teachers, and principals. She taught students ‘readin,’ ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmatic.’ She taught other teachers to never give up on a student. (How could YOU give up on a child when Miss Clara NEVER gave up?) She taught principals patience and determination.” Mr. Elvin Wells, Miss Clara’s first principal, said, “She had the drive and determination to achieve the goals she set for herself.” Miss Clara, we will miss you!
