STOP: KEEP MOVING is the fi rst monograph dedicated to Bunker Arquitectura, a Mexico City based group of architects, urbanists, designers and researchers. Their need to understand the contradictions of life, the hu-man condition and the architectural phenomenon has led them to take an unconventional approach to archi-tecture, presented through oxymorons, i.e. by opposing words or ideas that reveal new meaning, to disclose their creative processes and ingenious solutions to eccentric demands. In an attempt to salvage the broken link between architecture and the public, this book narrates how their built works, competition proposals and projects cometo life and develop, in contrast to how architecture is published today: in picture-perfect coffeetable books. In their search for questions they have come to realize that antagonistic manifestos complement each other and can coherently coexist in a congruent and inclusive statement: an architecture that stops and keeps moving at the same time.

BNKR Arquitectura

Bunker Arquitectura ha podido explorar

y experimentar la arquitectura en su es-

cala más amplia posible: desde pequeñas

capillas icónicas para clientes privados

hasta el plan maestro de una ciudad en-

tera. La necesidad de entender las con-

tradicciones de la condición humana y el

fenómeno arquitectónico los ha llevado a

reinventar, una y otra vez, sus métodos

creativos. El poco convencional acerca-

miento de Bunker a la arquitectura queda

retratado en esta primera monografía

que reúne las historias detrás de sus

obras construidas, sus propuestas para

concursos y sus proyectos.

Bunker Arquitectura has been able to ex-

plore and experiment with architecture

on the broadest possible scale: from small

iconic chapels for private clients to an urban

master plan for an entire city. The need to

understand the contradictions of the human

condition and the architectural phenomenon

has led the studio to continuously reinvent

their creative methods. Bunker’s unconven-

tional approach to architecture is portrayed

in this first monograph that brings together

the stories behind their built works, competi-

tion proposals and projects.

Bunker Arquitectura fue fundado en la

ciudad de México por Esteban Suárez en

2005. En los siguientes años se unieron

como socios Santiago Gitanjallí, Sebastián

Suárez y Zaida Montañana. En su breve

carrera han creado grandes y pequeñas

obras, cubriendo los ámbitos del urbanis-

mo, la infraestructura, el diseño de pai-

saje y edificaciones públicas, privadas y

utilitarias.

Bunker Arquitectura was established in

Mexico City by Esteban Suárez in 2005. In

the following years it was joined by partners

Santiago Gitanjallí, Sebastián Suárez and Za-

ida Montañana. In their short career they

have been involved in large and small works

covering the fields of urbanism, infrastruc-

ture, landscape design, public, private and

utility buildings.

UN ACERCAMIENTO

OXIMORÓNICO A LA ARQUITECTURA

AN

OXYMORONICAPPROACH TO ARCHITECTURE

gocios.

ros continuos inter-espaciados permite

crear el espacio de adentro hacia afuera,

tal y como un gusano o una termita exca-

varía sus conductos.

The program was divided into two parts: one

contains the service areas and offices and

the second one the exhibition areas, restau-

rant and business center. The first of these

is contained in a windowless cone-shaped

plinth surrounded by 52 twenty-meter-high

slabs that create an access patio.

At the other end of this patio an eleva-

tor communicates to the third level where

the exhibition space starts in a descending

spiral ramp that perforates the slabs in an

organic free form according to the demands

of the program and the exhibition design.

This structural system of continuous inter-

spaced walls allows the creation of space

from the inside out, as a worm or termite

would dig out the tunnels of its nest.

Un mes antes de iniciar la construcción,

se nos pidió fusionar ambos estilos, pues

sentían que la esencia de su marca se ha-

bía diluido y vuelto irreconocible. De nue-

vo accedimos. ¿Por qué no? Creemos

que cuando la arquitectura se reduce a

un juicio estético, todos los argumentos

subjetivos son válidos.

La terraza del restaurante tiene mesas

entre estanques y muros hechos de jar-

dines verticales. Las sombrillas asemejan

palmeras para acentuar la ilusión de un

oasis urbano.

OXYMORONIC-BNKR-TK-059.indd 130OXYMORONIC-BNKR-TK-059.indd 130 13.10.2010 19:39:5813.10.2010 19:39:58

The roof garden of the restaurant has ta-

bles between ponds and walls composed of

vertical gardens. Umbrellas resemble palm

trees to further accentuate the illusion of

this urban oasis.

A month before starting construction we

were asked to fuse the two styles because

they felt the essence of their brand had been

diluted and become unrecognizable. Again

we agreed. Why shouldn’t we? When archi-

tecture is reduced to an aesthetic judgment,

all subjective arguments are valid.

STOP : KEEP MOVING is an oxymoron, a conjunction of two evidently opposite terms. Physically, it is impossible to stop and move at the same time, but on a conceptual level, we’ve found this not only possible but profoundly true. Oxymorons lie at the heart of what is known as paradoxical thinking: ideas or statements that on the surface appear illogical or self-contradictory, but on a more intricate level, reveal truths about the human con-dition. Carl Jung wrote “Man’s real life consists of a complex of inexorable opposites – day and night, birth and death, happiness and misery, good and evil. If it were not so, existence would come to an end.”Oxymorons have been a recurring motif in architecture. Client briefs, programs, laws, regulations, social / eco-nomical / political factors and sustainability issues are constantly fi lled with contradictions. But it is in those contradictions that we have discovered the hidden potential to constantly reinvent our creative process. We have found this trade to be continuously dominated by a heightened sense of nervous ambivalence: sometimes striving for an elaborate and intricate solution to a simple and obvious problem, other times, seeking to reduce an amalgam of complexities to a clear cut and consistent expression. Caught in this continual oscillation be-tween one approach and its complete opposite, we have come to realize that antagonistic manifestos comple-ment each other and can coherently coexist in a congruent and inclusive statement: an architecture that stops and keeps moving at the same time. The history of architecture has been ruled by an obsession to brand, group, categorize and defi ne the differ-ent styles of the built environment. In short, it has continuously entrapped architecture in a box with defi nite boundaries and labeled it. Every new style, movement or tendency denying the validity of the one it is opposed to or the one that it succeeds. Rather than getting tangled in this stale mania of backward thinking, we have taken on the ambitious enterprise of focusing on life and the human condition as the key ingredients of an architecture that seeks to go beyond classifi cation.Concentrating solely on the visual aspects of architecture has proven to undermine its true potential. That is why STOP: KEEP MOVING introduces the concept and the narrative of the process, as the regulating principles that animate it. A concept is an idea comprehending the essential attributes of an investigative process. We like to interpret it as a “concrete abstract”. All the different factors surrounding each specifi c project are the components of a complex formula; the concept is the catalyst that makes the formula work. The narrative of the process presents the story “behind the scenes”. In an attempt to salvage the broken link between architecture and public, it seeks to reveal the deliberate connection of a series of seemingly unrelated events that evolve in chronicles of how the projects come to life, in contrast as to how they are presented today: in picture-perfect coffee-table books. Interesting stories have proven interesting architecture.

project 042. Acapulco Bay Bridgeyear 2010 type rban designlocation Acapulco Bay, Mexico client -team Tomáš Král, Adrián Aguilar (renderings) (my) position project leader date 02 / 2010 - 08 / 2010status research project

Can architecture salvage the broken link of a city that has been fractured and is forever growing apart? Can it make it regain its lost glamour and reposition it on the world map where it once stood as focal point but has been fading ever since? The fi rst settlements in Acapulco were established on the northern side of the bay on what is now considered the “Old Town” or “Old Acapulco”. The decision to construct the international airport on the middle of the strip between the “Tres Palos” lagoon and the ocean has encouraged the city to expand ever-further south. The urban growth past the Puerto Marques Bay has been named the New Acapulco or Acapulco Diamante and is comprised of luxurious high-rise tower apartments on the beach front. The tall mountains divide the city in two and the main connecting routes, the coastal avenue around the bay and the scenic highway, have soon become overloaded, engendering huge traffi c problems and literally mutating into linear parking lots.Cheap land prices in the old city encourage locals to live there, but the lack of job opportunities forces them to commute daily to the new part of the city for work. This continuous back and forth movement along the insuf-fi cient connecting routes is the main problem. The natural solution is to unite the two ends of the bay with a bridge thus creating an alternative route that shortens the distance between the two ends of the city. This also creates a continuous loop with the coastal avenue and the scenic highway. The silhouette of the bridge gives continuity to the natural landscapeThe municipal government does not have the resources to build a three-kilometer bridge and never will. By transforming its supporting structure into habitable spaces, private equity can be invited for its construction. This way, developers can acquire and sell on prime seafront real estate and the city solves one of its chief prolems. Architecture as a city problem solver. The project will fi rst be presented to the local authorities for its approval. Due to the scale and the titanic in-vestment required for its construction, it will probably be discarded as a utopian unviable solution. With some time to digest the idea, they might consider it as a viable option, and it will then become our task to search for private investment.

project 041. La Tallera Museumyear 2010 type culture - museumlocation Cuernavaca, state of Morelos, Mexico client Sala de Arte Público Siqueirosteam Tomáš Král, Adrián Aguilar (renderings), Diego Jasso (model), Guillermo Bastián (model)(my) position project leader date 04 / 2010 - 05 / 2010status competition entry

David Alfaro Siqueiros was a social realist painter known for his large murals that helped establish the Mexi-can Mural Renaissance, together with the works of José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera. Considered the most revolutionary of the three and a Stalinist at heart, his support for communist ideals took him around the world supporting social movements, workers’ strikes and other manifestations. This got him incarcerated in some countries and deported from others. But his true passion, “sculpt-painting”, the merging of painting and sculpture, also took him all over the world painting great murals. On August 9, 1960, he was apprehended and incarcerated in Mexico for what is still considered the most absurd of crimes – “social dissolution”. In 1964 he regained his freedom and a year later he was invited to create a huge mural for the interior of a convention center in a popular hotel in Cuernavaca, El Casino de la Selva. In that same city he built his work studio, which he named “La Tallera” in allusion to the feminine side of creation, in order to paint his large murals. It had a main working space with a system of electric and manual cranes that moved the asbestos cement panels up and down, allowing him to fabricate the mural without the use of scaffolding. Other areas of the studio included a materials laboratory, storage, a photogra-phy laboratory, offi ces, employee housing and his own private house. In 1966, while working on the mural he named “La Marcha de la Humanidad”, his sponsor decided to create a special forum to house it in Mexico City in what was to be his biggest development, Complejo Mexico 2000, that included the famous Hotel de México, now the World Trade Center. The panels were painted in La Tallera and then transported and assembled in this new building known as the Polyforum Siqueiros. To this day, this building houses the biggest mural in the world with 3,000 m2 of interior mural, 12 external panels and the roof mural adding up to a total of 8,000 m2 of mural painting. In 1966, while working on the mural he named “La Marcha de la Humanidad”, his sponsor decided to create a special forum to house it in Mexico City in what was to be his biggest development, Complejo Mexico 2000, that included the famous Hotel de México, now the World Trade Center. To this day, this building houses the biggest mural in the world with 3,000 m2 of interior mural, 12 external panels and the roof mural adding up to a total of 8,000 m2 of mural painting.A series of contemporary buildings without any apparent planning, logic or order other than to satisfy the necessities of creating the mural made up the workshop. The intention of the proposal was to select which constructions should be preserved, which should be demolished and which new buildings were needed in order to create an architectural element to envelop these volumes and give order and unity to the complex. This skin embraces, includes, compromises and orders the series of buildings that solve the different require-ments of the program in an integrated architectural expression. On the main façade, it acts as a protagonist accentuating the access in a mimetic gesture that responds to the external mural. In the interior patio and main gallery, it abandons this role to take on a more functional one as it protects the exhibition spaces from the natural elements. In the offi ce building and studio tower it adapts to its geometry and the resulting form is its product.

Page 17: cv + portfolio Tomas Kral

The project seeks to integrate and connect the external plaza directly with the museum and its main access. The design of the mural extend onto the esplanade generating the pavement design and the street furniture. A timeline with the most signifi cant events in Siqueiros’ life starts with the marking of his birth date at the south end of the plaza and runs along its length, entering the museum and culminating in the model of the PolyforumSiqueiros, his masterpiece. The invention of the system of mechanical and electrical pulleys to move the panels of the mural up and down was another example of Siqueiros’ genius. We proposed to rescue this system in the main gallery to conserve its workshop character. The pulley system will now move the exhibition panels for different and versatile con-fi gurations of space. The gallery will be in constant movement and always adapting and changing to solve the varied requirements of the exhibitions. For the art workshops we opted for an architectural language that resembled the essence of those of the modern movement of the mid-20th century where functional elements and lines conformed the requirements of the space. A lattice wall with the archetypal form of a house covers Siqueiros’ former residence that will now give lodging to visiting artists and researchers. It gives privacy and shade to the interiors and generates a sense of unity and differentiation to the envelope of the museum. We did not win the competition. Our proposal was discarded because it was considered too radical and ag-gressive. The jury decided on a more respectful, low-key and non-invasive intervention: a conservative revo-lutionary museum.

The new Plzen gallery building should be a landmark of the city, a real pearl and protective shell of the art works inside. We decided on “round“ architecture which suits the place very well. We took inspiration from nature, proportions of the golden section and the elegancy of egg-shaped curves. We used the Cassini curve, the ovoid case in particular. The archaeological excavation of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is integrated into the interior and becomes the most valuable architectonic exhibit. The entrance area of the ground and fi rst fl oor are public and free of charge. The new building has its own underground with archaeological excavation. Underground as a phenom-enon of a medieval town. A part of the “public” area of the building is the access to the roof terrace with an installation of monumental sculptures. The gallery has fi ve upper and two underground fl oors. We propose wall and concrete pole construction sys-tems. The outer layer of the double facade is formed by square concrete glass blocks, which have a long tradi-tion in the area. The material works as sound insulation but also scatters daylight. The two layer coat creates a light, “unfocused“ and variable image. Large windows are incorporated into the double facade serving as frames of the city view as former vistas.Light visual concrete, industrial wooden mosaic for the fl oors and cast concrete screed is used in the interior. The solid “materiality” creates a strong contrast to the interiors of supermarket pasteboards. The exhibition fundus is standard – modular glass showcases and mobile walls. The main part of our design is the “light plenum” which is an embedded “fl oor” – a cavity, which evenly spreads daylight. Light is brought in suffi cient quantity and quality into the exhibition depth by refl ection and refraction. Together with the double facade, well lit interiors with a stable environment are created.

Pilsen is attempting to win the European City of Culture 2015. To support the nomination, the City of Pilsen is preparing and executing a number of vital projects, which can be partly fi nanced from the project European City of Culture. We have decided to support the aspiration to win that title by this project.

A house or a “public space”? The esplanade has a history in the location. The area which organically links onto the park has become an isolated space, not serving as a public area, if the mere function of “transmission” is not adequate.

A city pleasant to live in is created mainly by a number of “ordinary” but quality houses. Cities also have their “alfa places”. It is best that such plots are owned by the “city” or that it can infl uence their creation or “func-tion”. Such an area is English Quay. The success of a public area in this spot can be disputed, the area is in shade during afternoon hours. Nevertheless, the public positively reacts to any form of “greenery” and “public area”. As an answer, we propose a house with a public function. We want to design a house – a pubic area of a simple form, which will geometrically absorb all surrounding data – sights, “functioning” and intensity of walk paths with pleasant places for sitting. We are aiming to create the house as a memorable place in the city, another clear “symbol” .

The main function will be a Centre of modern art and design at least on a regional level. We put emphasis on connecting it with “reality” – which means that we haven’t designed the house as a simple area to show artwork in – a gallery, on the opposite we propose a close link of works to the work-room, artists studios, de-signer studios which should have a commercial effect. The overlap into other fi elds is a plus, it will ensure the adaptability of the object in the case of a “dropout” of one of the users.

The house is composed of three programme units, separated with the possibility of various opening times. The fi rst “invisible-serviced” unit with a basement parking capacity of 280 cars with an automatic sys-

tem of fi ling. The second unit is formed from a “bustling – commercial” the most open area. The entry area is fi lled with small shops, the fi rst basement by large space studios. On the second

and third fl oor are offi ces, library and a small conference room. The third unit is a “calm“ part with a function of its own exposition area, the entry to this area is via gradually

rising stairs from City gardens.

Since the house is „roofed“ by the staircase the inner space works as „gallery“ – shopping or exposition. The connected recessive interior

is lit from the north by soft daylight, penetrating under the stair-case. The cover of the house is designed as a reinforced con-

crete shell lightened by a grid of circular perforation. The building has two large “windows” – one oriented into

American street – an area of busy elements, the other turns into City gardens and Museum

– the calm area. The undertone pastel colour refl ects the gaiety of the city,

the colour of the front can be changed with time.

We propose a bold, attrac-tive object that draws atten-tion to its presence in the city, one that will be liked due to its individuality.

Jury evaluation / The proj-ect represents a design which will cover the com-plete block with an abstract model. The interesting form of a crystal correctly fi nishes and supplements the park area. However, the gradua-tion into American street is inadequate and there is no connection to the river.

project 037. "Porotherm 2009" / single family house for futureyear 2009 type dwelling / single family housinglocation wherever in Czech Republic (EU) team Tomáš Král, Irena Šebová (my) position team member date 07 / 2009 competition entrystatus competition - submitted

/ Principles / Future house = house for the future, for one or more generations, is a natural house which cannot be built in spite of houses in the area, whether original or new. This is unfortunately often the case, not bringing profi t to inhabitants or village layout. Our concept is unorthodox, it is not a programmed “defi nition“. We utilize the natural characteristics of the in-habitants , i.e. improvisation based on present needs, where the incentives are the possibilities of our concept. The project is based on an expected size of 5+kk (5 rooms plus kitchen area) with a higher comfort of individual areas. The house will grow according to the needs and will of the family. The fi nancial investment is spread over time; it will always be possible to cover the costs with available family fi nances or a small mortgage.Another advantage of the future house is the security of a home for all members of the family – for the younger and the older – whilst retaining comfort, privacy and security for each member of the family during various family changes./ Concept of the architectural design / The architectural form directly evolves from the given conception. We design a live aesthetic of individual smaller objects for each “function“. We imagine that at the beginning, the family only has a sketch of the house. The sketch will gradually be adjusted according to the needs and possibilities. The fi rst phase of the building will be the core of the house – the living room with a kitchen and service rooms. This phase creates 38% of the house “programme”. The more intimate “cells” - private rooms of members of the family with their own bathroom and entry to the garden will be added to this super elevated joined area. In the second phase 2 larger bedrooms will be added – forming 60% of the programme. In the last phase we propose that 1 bedroom, garage and study will be added. During the extension of the house the more “intimate” bays of the garden will be created. Separate units “mini-fl ats” with a separate entry will be ap-preciated by parents and teens, as well as grandparents if they can no longer live independently. The house is without barriers and ensures that members of the family will live a dignifi ed, independent life where the shared area in the centre of the house remains a place of meeting./ Construction / The house will be built from the complete Porotherm system. The construction has a standard size without building details. The house is a bungalow, roofed over by an aisle roof with a wooden framework. The roof slant is visually admitted inside. / Materials / The whole concept is supported by the materials. The main matter of the house is plastered. The “affi xed cells” are incased by ceramic strips. The proposed roofi ng is titanic zinc, windows wooden. / Ecology / The house utilizes solar power. The north “cold zone” includes garages and service rooms. The larg-est window openings with entry to the garden are situated in the southern front, eastern and western windows are of a smaller size.

project 036. Diploma project - Housing in a highrise for Prague - Holešoviceyear 2009 type highrise dwelling location Jateční ulice, Prague 7 - Holešovice, CZ (EU) team Tomáš Král tutor Roman Koucký, Edita Lisecová / design studio Roman Koucký school Faculty of Architecture, CTU Prague date 10 / 2008 - 02 / 2009status awarded by the second prize in X. Diploma projects contest of the Czech chamber of architects, awarded by the Prize of jury in Architect Award 09 contest (competition for young architects)

The concept divides the high-rise building into two parts “city – Holešovice” and “over the city”. The lower part contains a two-level entrance lobby with a coffee – bar. Five levels are placed above the entrance levels– each one containing two “smaller” fl ats. At approximately 25 meters in height above ground (8th fl oor) the building is “split” by a common relaxation lobby. Villa plans are layered in all fl oors above the relaxation area. Different villa dispositions contain a large fl at, its own “garden” and two on storey parking spaces. The project was inspired by the unrealized concept “Highrise of Homes” by James Wines from 1981. The main principle is the intercon-nection of “gardens”, “villas” and parking in each storey.

07 programHlavní funkční náplní domu je bydlení. Rozsah užitných ploch jsem oproti běžné situaci, kdy stavební program defi nuje investor, defi noval sám zpětně dle konceptu a “hmotového” návrhu.

There are some fourteen-storey housing towers from 1960s built along the ring-shaped street at the south border of Pilsen, at the point of the sharp boundary between the town and “Bory Gardens”. In spite of contem-porary contempt for prefabs, we´ll try to link to the initial principle of the build-up area. We transform to the client´s plots a lay-out of housing towers turned toward the broad city gardens. The newly proposed towers don´t overreach the old ones with their height. We densify the towers with inferior houses in contrary to the original “far-between” urbanism (urban lay-out). The common “socle” serves as parking. We shift the buildings to the north edge of the site area, the south part of the parcel is proposed to become a collective garden primar-ily for the condominium inhabitants.

Some concepts come up as a reply to a client´s setting who writes out a selection procedure. We don´t con-sider any of the proposals to be a “ready solution (answer)”. The 13,000 m2 plot is situated in an area which can be without doubt marked as the “entrance to Pilsen from Prague”. The locality links to the signifi cant places “U Jána” and “U Zvonu”. The client´s parcel lies in proximity to the transit route on one side and to the histori-cal gardens and orchards of Pilsen on the other side. What is the right scale for the new buildings inserted into the old garden with little houses (a sort of “inner city village”) in the neighbourhood with a sixteen-storey offi ce tower “BCB”?All the indicated concepts orient idealistic dwellings into the inner garden inside the house block and at the same time demarcate toward the transit route. Our idea is based on the belief that the area has enough quali-ties which we can take advantage of. In our proposal, we pull inside the city gardens, we „parasite“ on the city skyline, we use the different scales of “metropolis” and “village” as well.

Revitalisation of a part of the downtown area in Plzeň - "theatre terraces" year 2008 type public space + commercial location sady Pětatřicátníků, Plzeň, CZ client city of Plzeň team Tomáš Král, Jiří Michálek, Růžena Vicherová / KB Král s.r.o. cooperation Klára Cílková / SVSMP (my) position team leader site area 10 000 m2 date 04 / 2008 - 10 / 2008 detailed study status ongoing

The design links to the successive reconstruction of the “ring” of city gardens in its southwest section. The area as a complex is under monument preservation. The “J. K. Tyl” Theatre, a dominating feature of this place, is ro-tated in the ground plan to 45 degrees against the right – angled grid of the City Centre. The spatial situation of the theatre in the gardens is inspirational in regard to composition. We apply the analogy with a jewel-pendant on a necklace. The theatre is a valuable “jewel” hung on a “necklace” of gardens. However, this principle is not “working” nowadays. The ring principle of the gardens is broken by the north-south transit highway „Klatovská třída“- this cannot be overridden! We want to retrieve the “jewel” approach.A reconstruction of the theatre and built up large annexes (fi rst of all underground) for functional needs of theatre was executed in the eighties. The parterre lay up and terrain adjustment corresponding to the period were realized as well. The appearance of city gardens has been stabilized since the break of 19th and 20th centuries. At the very beginning of the project process we proposed several concepts. The main intention was the devel-opment of the principle “jewel on a necklace”. We accepted the Monuments Preservation Authorities demand to give the theatre the position as „a building in a garden“. The entry proposals were still not well accepted by monument preservation staff. The basic conception of the solution is based on gravel–stone like shapes, an amoebic form of cells. This trans-ferred principle links to the historical treatment of the city gardens, where in a way “free form” green surfaces occur. The proposal is led by an effort to create a released and relaxed ambient of garden at the boundary with “Klatovská třída” transit road.We put green amoeba into the north wedge with three slight mounds. Another small “amoeba” is proposed by the east theatre extension. We propose two lanes. The fundamental step is aggrandising (!) of the current terrace on top of the “eighties” extension. This act al-lows purposeful use of the lower storey for services related to the ticket offi ce and at the same time usage of its own terrace free of useless railings and other items. We have designed a large gentle stairway to the proposed café terrace. We propose a lightweight café pavillion at the terrace in contrast to the solid „socle“ (at the height level of the current service annex). The treatment of the pavillion should be as subtle as possible to evoke a garden atmosphere.

The urban design study of the former papermill in Pilsen is elaborated for the present owner and serves him as a basis for “What will it be” decision making. The setting from investor is fairly free but led by the client´s effort to clarify the “maximum usage” of his plots. The terrain is situated on a river curve, particular meanders embody areas similar to the “papermill”. The EUROPAN 8 locality lies across the river. We propose two usage options: “lower” and “upper” holding the same “M2” amount. We want to interconnect the currently enclosed area with the surrounding urban structure. We preserve fi ne brick historical buildings with cast-iron frame structure inside and the concrete storehouse with remarkable charm as well. We link a new street grid to the current one. Newly designed buildings densify empty space to prevent thoughtless devel-opment in the neighbouring park.

The proposal started up spontaneously as a momentary idea at the time when the term student’s projects are delivered to the Faculty of Architecture. “Chaise lounge” is freely inspired by Le Corbusier´s chaise shape. The object was intended to be from the remaining paper tubes of plot paper stuck together with a thermal pistol. There was not enough enthusiasm to realize it, so only a lot of paper tubes remained...

Roman Koucký design studio´s students were delivering their semestral projects. The presentation would be the ending of the “Dutch ladies” Workshop. I prepared a simple scenario for urban design and particular build-ing projects presentation. The proposal´s plan was plotted onto a large-fl at banner and glued to the fl oor. Par-ticular buildings projects were printed onto various proportion boards according to the object´s actual shape. In a more abstract way, the boards would create the proposed Prague city skyline. The exhibition was realized with minimal means.

Since 1989 architecture is like a new discipline in the Czech Republic, which is still a bit strange to the general public. Naturally, there is not suffi ciency of suitable spaces where to exhibit... and moreover... How to show for example a whole city area reconversion right on site? The InfoBox could offer a solution (of course, not the only one and all-purpose). It is actually a kind of “kiosk for architecture sale”. I propose using “containers” as struc-tural units with an interior facility and fully equipped neutral boxes with a variable exterior.

Proposal concept for a nursery school = fancy sky castle. There can be seen only slidden circular desks from the bottom. The object is etheric (airy), a concrete “leg” is the only connection with the ground. Particular levels are formed by green “landscape”, mutual landscape sliding creates self terraces, overlaps in the south “facade” improve screening. Unloaded beams with circular openings serve as creep trough. All the levels are open-space for children’s play. Each fl oor can be covered with full-length curtains along the plan perimeter. The garden situated on the highest storey is separated from the exterior only by a metal grid.

The existing offi ce building “ÚMO 1” serves as the headquarters of the local town district. We propose a new “penthouse” extension as a lightweight wooden structure. The house will operate magisterially and civilly. The lightweight construction frame (structure) will conform to the needs of the extension of the existing object. The whole extension construction is formed by structural timbers used for both columns and beams. The trans-versal module “3.6 m” links to the concrete panels of the existing object. Wooden truss girders are used for the span of variable open-space in the highest storey. The facades are fully glassed-in with opening windows and exterior screenings mounted in the head. We use double fl oor for easy distribution installation. Minimal ceiling height in the fi rst fl oor of the extension is 2.65 m and 3.0 m in the second fl oor to strengthen the representative impression and better backlight in variable open-space as well. Plank terrace. Compact parts of facades are in-cased by wooden boards in natural form. The fi rst extension storey will offer approximately 480 m2 of usable offi ce area and the second storey about 340 m2. First storey will be offered for commercial offi ce rent, the second with the perspective on Pilsen, will be used by the municipal staff.

Park Kalikova is composed of three urban houses. The space layout (distribution) of the objects is inspired by the position of the site area at the sharp boundary of the intensive city center and Mže River alluvial plain in the west part of the area. The concept encourages the tendency of “back to the City Centre” and brings by oc-cupants requested elements of „living in greenery“.

House for an imaginary four member family on an imaginary lot. We chose a roughly 1000 m2 large area as a ”typical building ground” with an “ideal” south facing. We want to design a house with a minimal footprint and garage inside without any exterior “appendices”. In this way, to save the largest area possible for a garden, because of the fact that the garden makes a house more valuable than just a“large-size“ apartment. Outer wrap “box” of the house has an 11x11 groundplan. The interior space organization is inspired by Loos´s “Raumplan”. Particular fl oor levels are“shifted“. We put the accent on the neighbouring of all rooms among each other or at least to offer visual contact. We wanted thus, to allow better contact between family mem-bers.The area of the interior spaces is inscribed in facade. The construction consist of reinforced concrete slabs and and ceramic-blocks walls.

Nothing unusual in Czech towns, in the case of Pilsen it acts as a clear example of the contrast between a com-pact with an unnoticed, desurbanized area. Disastrous development (more often demolition) during the 20th century wrote in Pilsen a most signifi cant foot, and this above all, by building a city-crossing transit highway. Areas in close proximity practically fell to pieces. This is our proposal´s site area.In a two-year timespan the expressway perimeter will be completed and the city-crossing highway will once and for all lose its transit character. This main road will cease to be a barrier and will become a place “where something is in the wind” and therefore it has its own role in our proposal. The output of our project is the for-mation of three mutually consequential urban ensembles with various characters. There were more buildings demolished rather than built in Pilsen city center during the 20th century. Our proposal tries to turn this nega-tive tendency in the 21st century. Our design respects proven principles and therefore links to the current urban grid. We don´t build in “green fi elds”and we have to respect other infl uences within area. Above all, it is the curve of the existing main road, terrain morphology and river phenomenon. Our urban grid proposal strives to absorb these meandering curves and create a dynamic structure and thus vistas.During the proposing of the urban structure we put a question to ourselves: How to design an urban block for the 21st century? Thanks to new building technology and a suffi ciency of fi nancial resources in one developer’s tenancy the house takes the scale of a whole urban block. We don´t know the future possible investor or his investment intention. But we want him to have “free hand”. We divide particular streets according to their sig-nifi cance. This means that we defi ne “limit” streets most signifi cant for the city (traffi c grid, views, etc.) The plots of such “superblocks” cannot exceed these “limit” streets. The height limit we proposed will not exceed the relative height of 104 meters (because of the cathedral tower elevation). It of course enues that in lower situated areas buildings can reach higher elevation. The height level slightly decreases toward the old town parts.“At the Bell”I propose to totally build up the urban blocks delimitated by the preceding “regulation” up to a level of third or fi fth storey. Each block will become a large building able to to offer suffi cient freedom in it´s groundplan. The City Center will be then able to absorp services (retail, offi ces etc) nowadays driven out to suburban zones. The central area lots will become attractive again. The buildings being superior to the „socle“ aren´t so dense in their plan.

...The scenario matrixThe overall output of our entry research work which is briefl y described further is the “New Atlas of Czech Re-public” as a part of the global world. Particular maps display integration of Czech territory to the global system of communication and exchange. Our proposal for a Czech and Slovak Pavillion for X. Biennale of Architecture in Venice is based on matrix: Meta –city (CZ)4 in which it is possible (keeping particular conditions) to embody any project which works somehow with basic infrastructure, supports urban structure and makes it denser, more complex and living. We suppose that the matrix will be saturated fi rst of all with student projects because nowadays “real” projects do not bargain for such a view of a global city „superstructure”. It is not even possible in the Czech Republic at the moment and if any projects like this appear they are concerned with true research work which will be only gradually achieved and exercised in practice even though it is more than desirable. Our proposal which is elaborated in collaboration of two “different” schools of architecture is a kind of exhibi-tion platform, which will continuously develop and supply itself. Platform for one, two or even more architectural design studios, platform which operates as an “open source” for other projects related to the topic. Open source which contains within itself the future possibility of development until the fi nal specifi cation (setting) of works at the exhibition for Czech and Slovak Pavillion for X. project 007. Competition for three fountains for "Republic Square"year 2004 type public space + design location náměstí Republiky, Plzeň, CZ client city of Plzeň team Tomáš Král cooperation Růžena Vicherová date 06 / 2004 - 02 / 2005 second stage proposal status competition - submitted, fi nalist

The proposed solution includes building three fountains, in particular at the edges of the square edges, there is a plague pillar at the northwest edge. Each fountain has a square shaped ground plan 9 meters per side – it keeps to the plague pillar ground plan proportion. The fountains do not hold any clear fi rst-look symbolics. Intuition and random play are accepted as equal means of creation. The “free form” of water is the basic inspiration. The fountains are intuitive shapes respon-sive to their surroundings. The right-angled geometry of the square determines only the square plan of the fountains. Water will be represented in various forms – as a spring, stream, fl owing water, calm water level, steam and water spray. The fountains will have a white fi nish, partially matte and partially glossy. The matte sections serve for sitting, there is a refl ection of surrounding life in the glossy parts of volume. The material chosen for the fountains is synthetic matter. The fountain core is formed from shaped hardened polystyrene. The surface is covered by fi breglass. A polyester coating is used for the fi nal fi nish.

project 004. City Gallery "U Zvonu"year 2003 type culture location U Zvonu, Plzeň, CZ (EU) client city of Plzeň team Tomáš Král date 07 / 2003 - 09 / 2003 status winning competition entry, unrealized

The shape of dům U Zvonu (the Bell House), as seen from above, is delimited by the intersection of Pražská ulice (Prague Street) and the public gardens. Tram tracks give the resulting trapezoidal ground plan a rounded aspect. The ground plan, in fact, has a soft, irregular shape, refl ecting the compositional effect of the public gar-dens, the confi guration of streets, and the constant movement of trams and pedestrians. The design reinforces the composition of the existing buildings alongside the gardens in an appropriate manner, clearly demarcating the gardens without forming a barrier to them. It is envisaged that the ground fl oor will be used as a commercial gallery and an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions and for presentations by young artists. There will also be offi ces and essential staff facilities. The fi rst fl oor will accommodate a café. The café will have a full view onto the trees in the landscaped gardens. The second and third fl oors will serve as exhibition areas for the display of paintings and sculptures. The rooms could also be used for video projections, multimedia installations, and other alternative art forms. The basic concept behind the design is to create a distinct architectural and urban feature oriented onto Pražská ulice and to open the site onto Křižíkovy sady (Křižík Gardens). The inspiration for the design comes from the Möbius strip, a surface with only one side, which gives the architect the ability to relativize the rela-tionship between exterior and interior, openness and closedness, top and bottom. The design for the interior structure involves the insertion of a further Möbius strip, which will twist freely. The internal composition of the vertical open space gives the impression of a light, airy and tranquil interior open to greenery. The building’s outer shell consists of a supporting sandwich structure with a surface of treated sheet metal. Glazed surfaces will be composed of sections of acrylic glass; the individual sections will be borne by metal segments.
