PARTICIPATION AS A LANGUAGE ACTIVIST
In the year 2002, Govt. of Maharashtra introduced an option of Information
Technology to Marathi for 11th
and 12th standards. Many people from the
various fields joined their hands with Marathi language teachers in the
movement against this decision of State Government. In a way this was the
start of Kendra‟s movement for the cause of Marathi.
In the year 2006, a state-wide conference was organized jointly by (The
Institute for Protection and Development of Marathi Language) and the
Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Mumbai on the
subject of „Marathi in the field of Judiciary: Present Status and the
Challenges‟. Members of Marathi Abhyas Kendra had leading part in success
of conference and to reach the problem of Marathi all over.
On 1st of December 2007 with a view to have a research centre Marathi
Abhyas Kendra was established. At the same time efforts were on for creating
political movement by bringing various activities for Marathi on a single

platform. Thus Marathi Abhyas Kendra happened to be a platform for
research and activism.
In the year 2008, the Kendra organized a state-wide conference on the subject
„Why and how the Marathi medium schools should be saved‟. Renowned
educationists in the state participated in the conference and a blueprint of
various things to be executed at government level was prepared and submitted
to the Education Minister.
1. Marathi Schools
a. In the year 2008, the Kendra organized a state-wide conference on the
subject „Why and how the Marathi medium schools should be saved‟.
Bi-level action plan has been submitted to the State Government.
b. Workshops of English language for teachers of Marathi medium
schools.
c. Publication of a book titled „Ladhaa Marathi Shaalancha‟ (Fight for
Marathi Schools) in the conference organized on the issue of
recognition to Marathi schools held in December 2010.
d. Active participation in various agitations (hunger strike, „satyagraha,
dharana, salutation programmes, signature campaigns) jointly with
Shikshan Hakka Samanvay Samiti (Coordinating Committee for Right
to Education) in the movement of non-aided schools and discussions
with government.
e. The survey of 8000 families in BDD chawls at Worli in Mumbai
indicating the inclination towards medium of instruction and
publication of book titled „Shikshanache Marathi Madhyam : Anubhav
aani Aswastha Vartaman‟(Marathi as Medium of Instruction :
Experience and Disturbing Reality)
2. Marathi Language and Literary Circle
a. Annual sessions of Marathi Literary Circles during 2008 to 2012,
approximate presence of 250 students per year.
b. Successful follow-up for making of Marathi Language and Literature
Circles compulsory in Universities and affiliated colleges along with
provision for permanent funds.
3. Marathi and Information Technology

a. Workshops regarding use of Marathi on computer using Unicode in
Maharashtra.
b. Making Unicode obligatory for use of Marathi on computer in all
offices of State Government
c. Discussions with officers of Microsoft entrusted with responsibilities of
localization of ICT to mandatorily activate the option of Marathi
language on every computer sold in Maharashtra.
d. Publication of a booklet titled „Unicode va Sanganakavar Marathicha
Vaapar‟ (Unicode and Use of Marathi on Computer) that guides how to
activate and use Marathi on computer through Unicode.
e. Presentation regarding Computerized Marathi before Mr. Vijay
Bhatkar, chairman of E-Governance committee of Government of
Maharashtra.
f. Follow-up with MKCL (Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd.) for
universal approval in script keyboard for Marathi and incorporating
Unicode and Marathi as obligatory in MSCIT (Maharashtra State
Computer and Information Technology) curriculum.
g. One day seminar on „Marathisaathi Maahiti Tantradyan, Marathitun
Maahiti Tantradyan‟ (IT for Marathi, IT through Marathi), in
collaboration with Observer Research Foundation on 21st March 2010.
Report of the seminar was published at the hands of then Chief Minister
of Maharashtra Mr. Ashok Chavhan and presentation on Development
of Marathi in information technology on 7th November 2010.
h. Publication of educative booklet on the subject of Marathi on computer
under the fellowship.
4. Use of Marathi in Judiciary
a. State-wide conference on the subject of „Nyayvyavharat Marathi:
Sadyasthiti aani Aawhane‟ (Marathi in Judiciary: Present Status and
Challenges) in 2006 in collaboration with Department of Journalism
and Communication of University of Mumbai and Marathi Bhasha
Sanrakshan Aani Vikas Sanstha.
b. Publication of a book „Nyayachya Pratikshet Marathi‟ (Marathi waits
for Justice) by Adv. Santosh Agre and felicitation of distinguished

lawyers and judges working for enhanced use of Marathi in Judiciary
on 11th
December 2010.
c. Correspondence with Government of Maharashtra and Bombay High
Court for making Marathi authorised language of Mumbai High Court
in accordance with Article 348(2) of Constitution of India.
d. To promote more and more use of Marathi in judicial business 1500
copies of the above book were distributed to lawyers and judges in the
Annual Lawyers Conference of Maharashtra and Goa on 22nd
and 23rd
January 2011 at Nashik, under the leadership of Adv. Jayant Jaybhave.
e. With a view to have transparent business of judiciary and imparting
justice to all, 2000 copies of above book were distributed to lawyers
and judges in the Annual Lawyers Conference of Maharashtra and Goa
on 13th and 14
th January 2011 at Thane, under the leadership of Adv.
Pramod Patil and Gajanan Chavhan.
f. Action plan for Marathiisation and its effective implementation in the
judicial business of Maharashtra is finalized by Kendra.
5. Research Projects about Marathi
a. Facilitation and coordination of Research fellowship to Rammohan
Khanapurkar by Atul Tulshibagwale for Marathi on Computer for the
period 1st May 2010 to 30
th April 2011.
b. Facilitation and coordination of Research fellowship to Tushar Pawar
by Sudheendra Kulkarni of Observer Research Foundation for the
period 1st September 2010 to 31
st August 2011
c. As a part of fight for recognition to Marathi non-aided schools,
fellowship to Aarti Pawar by Atul Tulshibagwale for survey of these
schools for the period 1st August 2011 to 31
st July 2012.
d. Facilitation and coordination of Research fellowship to Tushar Pawar
by Bhausaheb Bandodkar Trust for the period 1st September 2011 to
31st August 2013 to do research on „Comparative Study of Major
Indian Languages and Language Movements‟
6. Right to Information
a. Support to movement of creation of Marathi Bhasha Vibhag
(Department of Marathi Language) in State Government through

replies received to deteriorated condition of Directorate of Languages,
Government of Maharashtra under RTI.
b. Campaign in media about use of Marathi in the business of
Government of Maharashtra on the basis of information collected.
c. Production of a book „Nyayachya Pratikshet Marathi‟ (Marathi waits
for Justice) based on information collected from various District and
Taluka Court regarding marathiisation of judicial business.
d. Cause to incorporate Marathi in the business of various Banks
including ATM centers.
e. Successful follow-up for use of Marathi in Railway business.
7. Marathi in Higher Education
a. Publication of a book titled „Marathichya Uchcha Shikshanachi Dasha
aani Disha‟ (status of Marathi in Higher Education)
b. Based on the proposals in the above book, proposals for expansion of
education of Marathi at graduate and post graduate level presented to
various universities in Maharashtra. Some universities have started
implementation.
c. With a view to policy changes about this, follow-up with all the
universities in Maharashtra through Department of Higher and
Technical Education.
d. Successful in Marathiisation of Bachelor of Mass Media curriculum of
Mumbai University.
e. Successful follow-up for establishment of Maharashtra Adhyayand
Kendra (Centre for Study of Maharashtra)
