Mise - En - SceneCave Scene

Location

The location of the scene is set in an underground cave system. This sets the mood of the film as it provides a dark setting for the characters and gives more possibilities for the creatures.

Costume | Hair/make up

The costumes of the creatures are all prosthetic to make them more realer in a sense of their movement and obviously their look. The snap in Holly’s leg was also prosthetic to make it more realistic. Make up wasn’t used on the women because there wasn’t any reason to. Juno also has make up used to give a more dirty, gritty look.

Props

Props used are the cameras, torches, bones and other objects that the set designers place around. This is to give the feel of the environnent being fully real. The bones scattered everywhere are an example of props generally used in horror films.

Lighting + Colour

The lighting is pitch black and the only light sources are the flashlights on top of the helmets, giving a dark, horror themed setting. The colours are mostly black and at times a yellowish tone because of the caves and the lights. The night vision puts a greenish colour over everything for film purposes, but still gives slight view of that the creature will appear. No natural lighting appears so it’s all mostly a bit saturated.

Movement | Acting

The movement and acting are all more intense and fast as they are all in a situation. The creature movement is fluid as he runs across the water in a fast motion. This is all done to create a sense of something bad happening and that they’re in danger because of the speed of everything including the switching between shots.
