Costume, hair and make up

The hats and coats that are worn in this picture were in fashion during in the time that downtown abbey was set.

The way the characters are all stood conveys the idea that they’re very proud. Costume, hair and makeup may be a contributing factor to how proud the come across, as they feel although they’re better than everyone else, including the maids who are also in the picture.

Costume, hair and makeup are very important as they can help the audience identify the time period, how wealthy \ un wealthy the people within the image actually are. This helps us as an audience either envy them or sympathise with them and for these reasons are very important.

I picked downtown abbey as they’re a good representation of varied costume, hair and makeup which all clearly showcase the time downtown abbey is set in and contain a mixture of wealthy and poor.Within this picture its easy to pick out the majority of the characters are dressed within expensive clothes apart from the two maids. They both clearly contrast from the rest of the characters within this image and aren’t as wealthy as the rest. From the costume and there hair, you can easily identify them from being different and not as high class as the rest in the image.During the time period that downtown abbey was set makeup wasn’t worn by many expect the rich and the royal, therefore the fact some of them are wearing some makeup this also suggests their wealth and privileges during this time.

PositioningFrom looking at this picture its easy to identify that the women is an main and essential character within this picture. Numerous parts of the picture helps the audience to recognize this. The way she's positioned helps the audience see her role within this picture. She's standing over a man, which applies that she must have authority and power over everyone else within the picture. It might also suggest that she's a strong apposed to everyone else within the picture.

Another contributing factor that helps the audience to identify the authority of the main character, is the clothing used. Anybody who looks at this image will be able to see that she stands out from everyone else within the picture. Yellow is known as an eye catching, bright colour which is normally associated with happiness and positivity, although in this picture its worn so that the audience can easily identify that she's different and has more power than anyone else within this picture. The fact she's wearing yellow contrasts with the other characters which are wearing suits. All the other characters have masks on their face, and she's the only one who doesn't, this again shows she's different to them and a prime character. The fact you cant identify them shows they’re less important In comparison to the women.

The director intentionally positioned the characters this way to assure that the audience could detect who was more important. The director used positioning to achieve this so that the story line would become more evident and clear. By placing the women in that position it assures that she comes across strong and powerful. It also looks like she's ready to take action. By characters laying on the floor this already shows that she isn't somebody you would want to mess with and is ready to put up a fight. fight which also represents that she's a strong and powerful women which goes against the typical stereotype of a women .

PositioningFrom looking at this image its really evident that there’s some sort of relationship going on between the two characters. From there closeness in proxemics its easy to identify that they must know each other very well. The fact the man is touching her face and gazing into her eyes suggests that he may be in love with her or prophase is a father daughter relationship . The women's emotions towards that man its not very evident she the feelings are precipitated as the women is just looking back with no particular face expression. Despite the fact its not obvious how the women's feeling, its clear has got her attention.

Another contributing factor which makes the audience believe that there is power is the colours used within the picture. Rich colours such as golds and beige and silver are exposed within this image, this suggests wealth and that he may be part of a royal background. Its evident from the fact has wearing a crown that he may come from a royal background.

The man within the picture is shown to have the most power. You can Identify this from the way he has fully captivated this women's attention. You can also see that he has a crown on his head which is of a golden shade. The crown may suggest wealth and authority. The women also looks fairly wealthy as her hairs done to perfection and she’s wearing makeup. The image clearly isn’t set within modern days therefore having your hair done and being able to wear makeup may have been seen as a privilege.

Facial expressions and gestureFacial expressions and

gestures are essential within images and films so the audience can clearly identify the characters emotions and there reaction. Within the picture aside you can clearly identify that he has his arms open would suggest that something unexpected or something that he did not anticipated has happened. As a result of what's been said or done, the character is left to seem unamused. His facial expression seems to be a smirk which would to the audience suggest that what happened before came as a surprise and has slightly amused by it but at the same time its annoyed and shocked him.

By the characters using facial expressions and gestures the audience can connect and really understand the character and how they are. As an audience it helps you read between the lines and learn more about the character as well as helping you clearly understand what is actually going on and how it effects the character. Because often what the character says and does can be extremely different, therefore by facial expressions and gestures being used it overall helps the quality of the film or image and makes the performance more effective.

By the character using these facial expressions and gestures theses suggest that he may not be used to feeling these types of emotions. The character has his arms open which may suggest that he's unsure on how to react. Maybe his character doesn’t know how to deal with these emotions as he's not normally exposed to disappointment or denial.

Facial expressions and gestures

This picture is taken from the movie ‘Side Effects’ which is a thriller. Its is very evident who this scene is based upon because of the actions being taken from the others within the scene. Its extremely evident that the main character is being taken to jail, she's looking at the other women with the facial expression of betrayal and anger. You can see this from how her mouth is party open and she's looking directly that the other women which could suggest it was her fault.

The fact the character is under arrest shows the audience she's gone against the law and is not to be trusted. its clear from her facial expression that its came as a surprise and that she's shocked.

The fact you can only see the side of the women's face suggests that’s she may have called the police because of the way she's being looked at with pure disgust. Because she's not looking at the main character within this picture and this may be down to guilt and down to it maybe being her fault. Her facial expression draws the audience in and makes them wonder who she actually is, this may also come as a shock to the audience which is why this is part of the thriller genre.
