If you ask me how I go into town, I’ll tell you I walk straight up and turn right at a crossroads when, according to the map, I walk at an oblique angle North Westward and bear to the right in a Northerly direction. I have been walking the boundary of the exhibition Art:Language:Location is sited across Cambridge from Newnham College in the West to the Museum of Technology in the East and from Plurabelle Bookshop and Sculpture Garden in the South to Whitworth House just across the river to the North. I’ve counted my footsteps with a tally counter pressing its lever with my right thumb each time my left foot hit the ground, documenting the space of the artwork that will inhabit Cambridge for three weeks. At each venue, facing the threshold, I took a compass reading with a hand held compass and a photograph on my iPhone to retrieve the GPS data. I would have liked to walk the boundary of the exhibition in a piece beaten the bounds as if this were a parish but there were constraints: not knowing all the venues so having to walk it piecemeal as the shape revealed itself . Thresholds During my visits I’ve thought a lot about where ‘here’ is . When you are a visitor – the ‘here’ you see on the map, as in ‘You Are Here’, accompanied by an arrow to show the spot you are standing on, is the place you are trying to get away from. I picked up a copy of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (Routledge Great Minds Edition, 2014) and read, in the Foreword, about Wittgenstein’s distinction between what can be said and what can only be shown and it occurs to me that this is what interests me and what I am doing here: making maps, marking thresholds, showing. It is odd to get to know a place for the sake of it: I am neither tourist, nor resident, student, nor worker. Distance: 9300 paces (two steps/pace) = 13950 metres (one average pace =1.5 metres) = 8.67 miles.

Since May I’ve made 12 visits: the first seven, research trips, to familiarise myself with the city. I assumed I’d ‘do’ the city as a tourist might, but all I’ve done is wander and, after six months, I’ve only been inside one college and that to see a temporary exhibit of pots. I have discovered my own landmarks – things I notice that help me orient myself – most of which are not in the official guides: the apparently abandoned Sandwich Plus shop at the corner of Station Road and Hills Road; the curved glass office block opposite that houses a company I worked for in London for 17 years; what looks like bronze apples on a low brick wall – the residue of cut off railings in front of a house on Lensfield Road; a relief sculpture on the Chemistry building opposite; Indigo Coffee House. I’ve bought every map I can lay my hands on and I’ve visited all the University Museums as well as The Folk Museum, The Round Church and the Museum of Technology. I have recorded each research trip with my own maps/itineraries, wondered if I could still take the visit outlined in the 1960 Official Cambridge Guide, and discovered that academic/scientific Cambridge is only one identity – it has been a major port; the site of one of Europe’s largest fairs (Stourbridge); an agricultural centre; and has a religious story to tell. Cambridge has rich, multiple histories – some plainly visible, some hidden, or in decodable traces – like the three boats on the city’s coat of arms.
