What is iron?Iron is very reactive and is found in nature in form of

its oxides ,carbonates and sulphates.Symbole-Fe

1) iron is not found free in nature.2)But is found in iron ores such as heamatite(fe2o3),megnatite(fe3o4).*The main iron ore is heamatite.

2) Coke- Heating Agent /Reducing Agent 3) Lime Stone- As a Flux.

Reactions At Blast Furnance

1) Zone Of Fusion-It is the lower most zone.Temp.- 1300-1500C

C + O2------ CO2 + 400Kj

2)Zone of Absorption-Middle Zone.Temp.- 800-1000C

CO2 +C -------- 2CO +160 KjCaCo3------ Cao + CO2

Cao +Sio2-----CaSio3 (slag)3) Zone Of Reduction – Upper most Zone .

Temp- 400-700CFe2O3 + 3CO----2Fe + 3CO2

Impurities Found In Iron Ore And There Effects

1) P-% vary from 0.1 to 2%It combined with Iron &form Fe3P it embrittles iron.

2) S -%vary from 0.4 to 1%It also makes Iron br ittle ,hard &produce unsound casting.

3) Mn-%vary from 0.5 to 1%it increases hardness.

4) Si - %vary from 1 to 4%it reduces the strength of iron and make it brittle.

5) C- 4to 4.5%1)
