MISE-EN-SCENE

SETTING

One of the shots we see in the Conjuring trailer is an establishing shot, in this we see a rural family home surrounded by forest. This is done to show how isolated the house is. Which suggests to the audience that the individuals who live there are quite vulnerable and separate from other people.

In the Hallow we see a similar shot of an isolated house in the middle of the Irish countryside also surrounded by forest. This makes the shot appear dark and the area very hostile

COSTUME

In the Hallow the costume is fairly normal its everyday clothing that people would wear, there is nothing the specifically standards out and represents the family as pretty ordinary.

In the Conjuring they are dressed as they would be in the time this film in set in, the clothes in this time were particularly dull but from the out side they would appear normal and ordinary. This would therefore represent them happy making them look vulnerable.

LIGHTING

In the Conjuring the lighting is fairly minimal, the only lighting we actually get is from rooms lighting or actual daylight. This makes all the rooms look gloomy and have a cold atmosphere . Due to the clips looking quite dark most of the time the audience is already thinking that something bad is going to happen.

In the Hallow a lot of what we see is filmed outside, and so its mostly lighting that we’d see in the dark and at night, although we do see some day time light its not that often. This makes the trailer appear scarier than it actually is because its so dark most of the way through it so you can’t see the monsters.
