Who are we?Kaisahan ng mga Mindoreño Laban sa Dayuhan at Dambuhalang Pagmimina (KALASMINA, Mindoro People’s Unity Against Foreign and Large-Scale Mining) is a multi-sectoral alliance committed to protect the welfare, the environment and the future of the people from the catastrophes posed by foreign and large-scale mining in our beloved island of Mindoro in the Philippines.

KALASMINA was formed in 1999 to name a small group of people that aims to criticize the flawed law dubbed as Philippine Mining Act of 1995. KALASMINA suffered from a long lag after its core convenors faced various concerns outside mining-related issues. However, they revived the alliance on April 22, 2015 to serve as a melting pot of various efforts that will campaign against the unbridled entry of Norwegian mining firm Intex Resources ASA for its Mindoro Nickel Project.

Few months after the revival, KALASMINA grew unprecedentedly. Currently, KALASMINA is composed of individuals from different walks of life, such as professionals, students, religious, patriotic government officials, businessmen, employees, human rights advocates, environmental activists, indigenous people,

farmers and farm workers. Organizations and institutions from various backgrounds and persuasions also joined the alliance. It was also able to forge partnerhip with local government units and agencies.

KALASMINA joined the wider campaign Save Verde Island Passage Movement led by Philippines-based Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment to heed the urgent call to protect Verde Island Passage, the world’s “Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity.”

What do we fight for?

People first! At the core of KALASMINA is the welfare of the people. We believe that any mining venture should not imperil the people or impair their sources of livelihood.

National patrimony! KALASMINA is patriotic. It puts the interest for the progress and prosperity of the Philippines above the superprofit-driven interest of foreign corporate firms.

Environmental protection and preservation! KALASMINA has an outpouring love for the Philippines’ natural resources. We prepare our ranks to combat foreign and large-scale mining that has a long legacy of ca tas trophes that put the Philippines in terrible peril. We will not let these happen in Mindoro Island.

KALASMINA IN ACTION! An interfaith protest action in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines on June 12, 2015. It was considered as one of the biggest anti-mining rallies in the island’s history.

What is our mission?

As its name suggests, KALASMINA (in Filipino language, literally means “shatter mining”) wants to stop foreign and large-scale mining in Mindoro Island. Particularly, KALASMINA is heeding the the need to:

1. Conduct research and documentation about mining in areas where there is mining application and/or operations

2. Hold an information-education drive that will proliferate our analysis and demands to stop foreign and large-scale mining

3. Serve as an avenue for grievances and demands with regard to foreign and large-scale mining

4. Document and seek resolutions on human rights abuses in areas where there is mining application and/or operations, especially in ancestral domains of Mangyan, an indigenous people that can only be found in Mindoro Island

5. Serve as a watchdog that will examine mining applications and operations

6. Collaborate with individuals, organizations and institutions in and outside the Philippines on the basis of protection of the people’s welfare, environment and livelihood

In line with the current threats posed by the mining venture Mindoro Nickel Project of Intex, a Norwegian mining firm, and other foreign and large-scale mining in Mindoro Island, KALASMINA campaigns to:

1. Condemn Philippine President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for their action that led to the reinstatement of Intex’ environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for its Mindoro Nickel Project

2. Call for the junking of Intex’ ECC of and all mineral production sharing agreements (MPSAs) related to Mindoro Nickel Project

3. Oppose the entry of mining firms ADEBCO, Pitkin Ltd., Agusan Petroleum and their subsidiaries

4. Assert the authority of the 25-year mining moratorium in Mindoro legislated by the local council of Oriental Mindoro in 2002 and of Occidental Mindoro in 2009.

What do we do? Research center. With our partners in the academe, KALASMINA is conducting researches to probe the impacts of foreign and large-scale mining in Mindoro on the people’s welfare, livelihood and environment. It gives exceptional attention to the impacts of foreign and large-scale mining on Mangyan indigenous people and farmers that comprise majority of the Mindoro Island’s population.

In line with this, KALASMINA conducts environmental impact mission, focus group discussions, and case studies among others.

Center for information-education drive. KALASMINA develops discussion materials for a massive information-dissemination and education campaign. We believe that a well-informed public will and will always be the foundation of our campaign to combat catastrophes posed by foreign and large-scale mining. In line with this, KALASMINA conducts forums, consultations, and caucuses among others. We also use the social media as an important tool to inform and educate the public.

to inform and educate the public.Environmental campaign and advocacy center. KALASMINA is combining both legal and metalegal actions to push for our demands. While we take legal actions such as filing of petition and writ of kalikasan, among others, we believe that direct political actions play a significant role to emphasize that our demands are urgent and relevant. Thus, warm bodies must show their dignified stand on mining-related issues.

How can you help?

KALASMINA resolutely believes that the campaign against foreign and large-scale mining in Mindoro is not sole ours. Your contribution – big or small – will surely advance our campaign forward. Here are only some of the things you can do:

1. Be a KALASMINA convenor! Embrace our cause and share with

us the love for our environment and the people who depend on it. You have the initiative to take any action to support our cause. Just coordinate with KALASMINA to keep the KALASMINA secretariat well-informed about our activities and projects.

2. Be an advocate in action! Organize any event in your county or community to win over public support. It can be a forum, benefit concert, play or gig, small group discussion, flash dances, photo exhibit, film showing or unity parade.

3. Gather support! As a

convenor you can also help us gather support from various sectors in your community.

4. Release a statement of support! It impacts people to know how wide the support we are able to gather. You can release a

short statement or poster that sends your message of allegiance to our call to action.

5. Donate funds and other

resources! Funds are the lifeblood of any campaign. We welcome any recourse in the form of monetary donation and material/technical aids.
