About AFS and Programs關於AFS及計劃

AFS國際文化交流 (AFS Intercultural Exchanges) 是一個非牟利、非政府的國際義工組織，多年來致力推動國際文化交流活動，目的是透過各類交流計劃，提升全球參加者對不同文化的尊重和理解，從而達至種族融和與世界和平的願景。

AFS香港辦事處於1982年成立，目標為向本地青少年提供全面及深入的跨文化交流機會，促進學生於語言、學術、日常生活及文化等方面的交流及學習，以培養學生成為世界公民。AFS海外交流計劃的目標對象為15至18歲之本地中學生，學生將會參與為期10個月或短期的海外交流旅程。

AFS Intercultural Exchanges (AFS) is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization which has been dedicated to promoting international exchange activities for decades. Its aim is to establish mutual respect and understanding among participants worldwide through various exchange programs, with a view to achieving the vision of racial harmony and world peace.

AFS Hong Kong O�ce was set up in 1982 to provide local youth with complete and in-depth international cultural exchange opportunities, and to promote exchanges and learning regarding language, academic study, daily life and culture, to enhance their quality as global citizens The major targets for AFS overseas exchange programs are local secondary school students aged 15 to 18, and those selected will participate in a 10-month or short-term overseas exchange program.

大家好!

今年，我們慶祝AFS香港成立35週年。過去35年，我們積極推動文化交流，鼓勵香港學生走出國際。展望將來，我們亦從去年開始重新思考機構的定位。馮彥博先生於十月加入AFS香港，出任總幹事一職，並參加了於加納舉行的AFS國際會議。馮先生為AFS香港訂立新的發展方向，未來我們將加強與學校及義工之間的聯繫，以提升我們在香港的影響力，同時實踐AFS International的理念。

強大的義工網絡是全球AFS賴以發展的關鍵。為確保香港的義工網絡能穩健發展，我們將在這方面投放更多資源，包括於今年新增一個全職職位「義工發展統籌」。 AFS香港也有超過三千名充滿熱誠的舊生，即使在多年過後，他們仍然從我們的舊生網絡中獲益良多。我們亦正在加強與舊生之間的聯繫和溝通，同時透過不同媒體，提升AFS香港在市場上的知名度。

基於種種原因，今年參加一年海外交流計劃的學生人數較往年少，為此我們正在努力加強交流計劃團隊與接待計劃團隊的合作。高級計劃總監黃少希先生亦將帶領兩個團隊，與學校建立更緊密的合作關係，並探索與更多學校及其他本地非牟利團體合作的可能，藉此為不同階層的學生提供更多機會。我們同時鼓勵參與計劃人士採取更開放的心態，前往較少人選擇的國家交流。全賴捐助者和贊助企業多年來的大力支持，包括香港上海匯豐銀行有限公司、香港中華煤氣有限公司、新鴻基地產發展有限公司及香港賽馬會慈善信託基金，讓AFS香港能為更多學生提供交流機會。

跨文化學習並不止於交流計劃。近年來，AFS International設計了一系列的培訓及認證課程，以傳播跨文化學習的概念，AFS香港亦正在為義工提供更多培訓機會。我在此高興地宣佈，去年有兩名香港的義工領袖成為獲認證的跨文化學習教練，他們是李永康先生及簡永樂先生。

民生書院校長陳嫣紅女士現已退任香港理事會成員，但我們期待未來繼續得到她的支持，亦衷心感謝她過去幾年對理事會的貢獻。另一方面，我們很高興梁心浩先生於去年加入理事會，並提供了不少寶貴的幫助。他曾經是從澳洲出發到荷蘭交流的學生，目前已在香港定居多年，同時是一名成功的律師。為了獲得更多專業上的幫助以及進一步了解香港教育界和年青人，我們希望未來能邀請更多榮譽顧問，為我們的發展提供意見。

Dear AFS Hong Kong Community,

This year, we are celebrating 35 years of promoting international, intercultural student exchanges in Hong Kong, and the past year we have also focused on repositioning the organization for the future. Imbert Fung joined us as Executive Director in October, after completing a strategy project for AFS here, and just in time to attend the AFS International Conference in Ghana. Imbert is bringing renewed focus to the organization to increase our engagement with schools and volunteers with the goal of increasing our overall impact, consistent with the Mission of AFS International and the global initiatives underway, led by President of AFS International, Daniel Obst.

Specifically we are putting more e�ort toward developing, empowering, and growing our volunteer community with the introduction of a full-time "Volunteer Development Coordinator" sta� role. A strong volunteer network is a critical and distinguishing feature of AFS globally, and we must ensure that ours in Hong Kong continues to stay healthy and energized.

Another distinct characteristic of AFS is its passionate alumni, and this is certainly the case in Hong Kong where we have over three thousand returnees, many of whom stay active and benefit from the friendships and network long after their returns. We are strengthening our communications, engagement and sta� function to support alumni and broader community engagement, as well as awareness and visibility of AFS through marketing increasingly through digital and social media.

Sending participants declined in our current Year Program for a variety of reasons, but we seek to turn this around through closer collaboration between Sending and Hosting Teams now combined under the leadership of Thomas Wong, Senior Director of Programs. Thomas and the team will carry out broader and deeper school engagement, continue to add new schools, and explore new partnerships with relevant NGOs targeting the city’s youth. This should enable us to better provide opportunities for students of all socio-economic backgrounds. We are also encouraging applicants to be open to “non-traditional” destinations since many of the benefits of an AFS year are attainable regardless of one’s choice of country. Our corporate donors help to make AFS experiences possible, and we are extremely fortunate to continue to benefit from the generous support in the form of scholarships from HSBC, Towngas, Sun Hung Kai Properties, and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Intercultural Learning (ICL) occurs not only through experiential, immersion programs. In recent years, AFS International has developed a training and certification program to teach the concepts of Intercultural Learning. We are equipping more volunteers with such training and building capacity in our network. Toward this objective, I’m pleased to report that two of our volunteer leaders, Wing Hong Lee and Kent Kan, became certified ICL trainers this past year.

At the Board, we bid farewell to Kuby Chan, Principal of Munsang College, and longtime supporter of AFS. We wish to thank Kuby for her service on the board these past several years and look forward to her continued support. Som Leung, a Returnee from Australia to Holland, longtime resident of Hong Kong and accomplished Lawyer, has proven an invaluable addition to the Board this past year. We look to expand our group of Honorary Advisors to AFS Hong Kong in the coming year to ensure we have the breadth of expertise and perspective from the youth and education sectors required to inform our strategies for the future.

AFS depends significantly on scholarships and unrestricted donations from individuals, corporations and other organization to make AFS programs as accessible to as broad a cross-section of students as possible. Over 30% of program participants receive financial support this year.

Italy to Hong Kong 2017/2018意大利到香港交流 2017/2018

我希望跟大家分享我在香港的經歷。AFS給了我探索世界的機會。我很喜歡過去五個月在香港的生活，因為我與我的接待家庭和學校都建立了融洽的關係。我非常感謝我的接待家庭，他們對我非常友善、包容。我與老師之間的關係也很好，他們都很願意幫助我。

根據我的個人經驗，我認為努力讀書是很重要的，這樣在學校的表現才會好。如果想跟大家有良好的互動氣氛，我覺得最有效的方法是尊重每一個人，試著表現得更友善和樂於助人，當然少不了要保持開放的心態。

I would like to share something about my experience here. AFS gives me the opportunity to see the world. I really liked the past 5 months in Hong Kong because I have created a nice rapport with my family and my school. I really appreciate that my host family is very nice with me and they have been very accommodating and kind in my journey here. In the school, I have a good rapport with all the teachers, they are friendly and helpful.

From my personal experience, I can say that you need to work hard in school to build a solid and outstanding rapport with the scholastic context. The most helpful things to build a good atmosphere in your stay here are showing respect for everyone, trying to be kind and helpful and last but not least, open-minded.

Finland to Hong Kong 2017/2018芬蘭到香港交流 2017/2018

五個月過去了，我在香港交流的一年也已經過去了一半。我的家鄉芬蘭與香港截然不同，但而香港已然成為我的另一個家。過去幾個月，我學會了如何使用筷子，更可以不用依賴Google Map，就能在香港到處走。

我在接待家庭同時體驗到台灣及中國的文化，我很慶幸自己可以同時接觸不同文化，更可以學到廣東話及國語。跟生活習慣截然不同的家人相處並非易事，但我也從中學會如何與來自不同文化背景的人相處，以及如何自己解決難題。

一開始最難適應的是學校生活，因為這裡的上課時間很長，課堂又多以中文教授。但即使有時令人困惑，我仍然享受在學校的時光，因為我有機會參與不同的運動比賽和學校活動，也認識了不少好朋友，他們經常鼓勵我，我相信我們的友誼可以維持一輩子。

我已經學到很多了，但這個城市仍然有很多值得探索之處，幸好，我還有時間。

Five months have passed and it is already the half-way of my exchange year. Finland, my home country, is completely di�erent from Hong Kong which has now become my second home. In the past few months, I learned to master chopsticks and I can now walk around the city without looking at Google Maps all the time.

My host family is a mix of cultures from Taiwan and China. I have had an amazing opportunity to get to know many cultures at the same time and learn Cantonese as well as Mandarin Chinese. It is not always easy to live in a family which has unknown and strange manners and rulers for you. But that way, I have learned to get along with di�erent people with di�erent cultural backgrounds and handle sometimes very hard situations on my own.

School was at first the biggest obstacle because of the long days and lessons which were in Chinese. But now I have learned to enjoy my time in school even if it is sometimes very exhausting. I have had the opportunity to attend athletic competitions and school activities. I have made good friends who always cheer me up and I know our friendship will last for lifetime.

I have learned a lot but there is still so much to learn from this city but fortunately there is still time.

Hong Kong to Brazil 2017/2018香港到巴西交流 2017/2018

Goiania位於巴西中部，附近沒有任何海灘，也不及其他大城市美麗，但當地人十分友善，使這個地方變得相當可愛。我來巴西之前，很多人提醒我不要輕易相信任何人，因為這樣很危險，但事實上，大部分巴西人都是友善及樂於助人的。

經過幾個月，我真的覺得自己改變了。由於我看起來與別人不一樣，我以前總是很在意別人對我的看法。我會避免曬得更黑，也盡量不把自己的頭髮放下來。但在巴西，我感覺自己屬於這個地方，我就像一個平常人一樣，一點也不特別，我也開始愈來愈不在意別人對我的看法。這可能跟巴西人看待他人的態度有關，不管你的外表如何，你想做什麼，他們都會尊重你。你也不需要刻意融入這裡，這裡的人對你也不會有刻板印象，因為每一個人都是獨一無二的。

Goiania is in the middle of Brazil, and is not nearby any beaches or as beautiful as other big cities, but the people here are really nice and it makes this place so much better. Before I came, many people told me not to trust anyone easily because it is dangerous. But actually, most of the people here are really kind and helpful.

Through these months, I can truly feel that I have changed. Because I looked di�erent, I used to really care how other people think about me. I was afraid to get more tan or to let my hair down. But here in Brazil, I feel like this is where I belong. I seem like a normal person, nothing special. I started to not to care how people think about me, and be whoever I want to be. This is how Brazilians are like, no matter how you look, what you like to do, they will still respect you. You don’t need to fit in, and there is no stereotype, because every single person is di�erent.

香港到瑞士交流 2017/2018

有人說，當一個交流生，就是把自己的心分開，散落到世界各地，希望有一天它們會重遇。

與朋友告別從來都並非易事，尤其當我們來自不同國家，沒有人知道我們何時會再相遇。所以，我和我的朋友很珍惜每個相處的時刻，希望盡量留下更多美好回憶。瑞士真的是一個值得一去的地方! 這裡有很多美麗的自然景色，還有很多地方正等待我們去探索。

Someone says, "being an exchange student is letting your heart be divided into several small pieces and let them be taken to every corner of the world, and hope that one day they all meet again."

Saying goodbye to friends is never easy, especially when we are not from the same country; it's hard to tell when we will meet again. So I realize that my friends and I have to create as many memories as we can, and cherish every moment that we spend together. Switzerland is really an awesome place! The nature is so fascinating, and still, there are plenty of places waiting for us to explore.

Host Family of Italian ExchangeStudent 2017/2018

意大利交流學生的接待家庭 2017/2018

你為什麼要在2017年成為AFS的接待家庭呢? 身邊的朋友、同事、親戚第一次與我接待的意大利交流生Giustino見面時，他們總是這樣問我。他們說:「這真的不是一件簡單的事!」而我也總是回答:「的確如此。」

我和我的家人都期待日常生活中有更多變化，而接待一個交流生正是我們一直期待的改變。當這件事情真的發生了，也確實為我們帶來不少新的想法。Giustino來自意大利一個小城市，那裡的文化與香港截然不同。我們從他身上學到很多，對意大利人的家庭觀念、文化及青少年的了解也加深了。記得他剛到時，我們需要作出不少讓步和妥協，例如他每天和週末何時需要回家呢? 他需要分擔多少家務? 我們如何跟進他在學校的情況及學業成績? 我們應該給他多少自由? 但與此同時，他也要作出讓步。

作為接待父母，我們等於要多照顧一個兒子，我們的兒子也等於要跟另一個家人相處十個月。我們每天都在學習如何溝通、接納和了解對方。這個過程充滿挑戰，但我們的付出絕對是值得的。

Why did you join AFS as host family in 2017? This is the question my friends, colleagues and relatives always ask when they first met my Italian exchange student, Giustino. They said, “It is not an easy task!” “Yes, it isn’t,” I replied.

My family desired some changes in our daily life. An exchange student was the change we were looking for. It happens. It brings some new insight for us. Giustino came from a small city in Italy with a very di�erent culture. We have learned more about Italian family, culture and today’s youth in Italy. We needed to compromise with him starting the first week he came. What time should he have to come back home every day and weekends? How much housework should he have to do? How would we follow up his school activities and his academic results? To what extent should we provide him his freedom? Meanwhile, he also had to compromise with us.

As host dad and mum, we have to take care of one more son. My son has to live with another brother for 10 months. We all are learning to communicate, accept, and understand with each other every day.

It is a challenging task but it is worth every minute.

我對AFS的認識始於2007年，當年我的女兒參加AFS的交流計劃，前往德國。

其實，我第一次當支援義工的經驗並不太順利，當時是一位從德國來的學生，但他經常不上學，也不跟家人溝通。不過，我後來發現這樣的經歷並不是問題， AFS的原意就是讓來自不同背景的人有互相交流的機會，然後一齊成長。衝突總是會有的，但也讓我們可以從中學習，蛻變成一個更好的人。

我在AFS見證許多學生的成長，看到很多家庭的改變。其中一個我們曾經鼓勵的基層學生，就在完成一年交流計劃後，從一個極度害羞的中學生，蛻變成一個積極的人，更成為學生會主席。作為義工和義工領袖的我們，也在一直學習、成長。

感謝AFS，感謝所有我曾經接觸的義工和學生，讓我這年過60的壯年人生活過得非常滿足愉快和有意義!

I started to know AFS when my daughter decided to join the year exchange program to Germany.

In fact, my first volunteering experience as a support contact volunteer is not so smooth. I was responsible for a German student at that time, who didn’t want to go to school and communicate with his host family. But later, I discovered that it is nothing wrong with this kind of experience, as one of the missions of AFS is to let people coming from di�erent backgrounds to understand each other and learn together. It is very normal to have conflicts, but those are also the chances for us to learn and change.

In AFS I witnessed the changes in di�erent students and families. One of the students that we encouraged was a very shy secondary school student, but after joining the year exchange program, he became an outgoing person and the chairman of student union in his school. As a volunteer or volunteer leader, we also keep learning.

Thank you AFS, all the volunteers and students that I met, they make my life so meaningful and full of joy!
