Mise en scene 1

Page 2: Mise en scene 1

Lighting The beginning scene starts off pitch black and phases into the flicking of candles. This shows the concept of death and the idea of the scene being imaginary. Sarah is imagining her daughters birthday, where Jess is blowing out her candles. The candles fill up the room and bring Jess’s figure clearly to the screen, however when the candles are blown it, it represents Sarah’s hope of her daughters survival being shattered. As Sara runs through the corridor, there is a dark shadow that follows herm showing that no matter how much she tries to run away from this nightmare, it will always be following her. As Sarah runs, the lights pitch from dark to light, indicating that when she tries to be hopeful and positive, the gloom of her situation takes over.

Props The heart beat monitor is a significant prop, because it shows the lines being nearly flat, proving she’s close to her death, or has just survived death. The birthday cake is a prop that was in Sarah’s thoughts, to symbolize her precious daughters birthday. This is how Sarah spends time with her daughter.
