Mise-En-Scene:

What is mise-en-scene?Mise-en-scene is everything in the music video that isn’t the actors/actresses. This could be: - Props - Locations - Lighting - Colours - Costumes - Make-up

How do we plan on using it? PROPSIn our music video we plan to use props such as iPhones, (fake) alcoholic drinks, cars, and other things to make our video look as legitimate to real life as possible. Using things like iPhones in our video will make it look modern and new, and including alcoholic drinks will appeal to a younger adolescent audience. Using these props will attract our target audience because they are young (16-19) and like going to parties and also tend to have iPhones and cars etc. Our artist is a young male, and we believe he would use similar props in his videos, and we want to create that link between our video and the artist.

How do we plan on using it? LOCATIONSWe plan to use several different locations in our music video to make it seem as though several days/weeks have passed. We think this will attract our audience because it will create quite a vivid imaginable story for them to watch. Our audience may also be able to relate to the storyline and so this will therefore make them enjoy it even more. The Weeknd also likes to create strong narratives in his music videos, and so by doing this in our video, we are making sure it fits with him, as well as the genre of his music and his audience.

How do we plan on using it? LIGHTINGMost of our music video will be shot using natural lighting because our locations are mainly either outside or in a car. However, we have got a scene in which will be shot in a ‘dark room’, therefore we are going to need to use several different lights to create the best ‘club’ environment. By using the dark room to create our club scene we can ensure that we’ll be able to create a realistic atmosphere for the video.

We can also create a club mood, including using the fake alcoholic drinks. This scene will definitely appeal to our audience because they are the age in which they either start going to parties or clubs and start getting into more serious relationships etc.

How do we plan on using it? COLOURS

The narrative for our music video is quite dark and emotional but also relatable to our target audience. However, we don’t want our video to be dull and use dark, black toned colours. Therefore, we have chosen to create happier, more vibrant scenes in it as well. In these scenes we will try and use more happy colours, this will be presented through the costumes and make-up of our actors, and also through the lighting in the club scene etc. For the ‘break-up’ scenes, we may choose to shoot in the evening/night to create a darker setting which will also create the mood to be a lot lower and not as happy.

How do we plan on using it? COSTUMES

The costumes of our audience are going to young, and fashionable and relatable to the fashion that we believe our target audience will wear. This will be clothes such as ripped jeans, t-shirts, boots, jumpers, coats etc. By using the same style outfits as our target audience we will be making our video more appealing to our audience which will make them want to watch it. Our artist also wears relatively fashionable clothing in his videos, this will also create a link between ours and his videos.

How do we plan on using it? MAKE-UPThe make-up of our actresses will be relatively ‘normal’ to the make-up that people tend to wear daily. We aren’t going to be creating any abnormal scenes which requires drastic or weird make-up. The scenes in our video are going to be in real-life settings, so we will therefore create different make-up looks depending on the location. This works in the same way as our costumes, in that because we are keeping things relatable to real life, we need to our costumes to be as realistic to the scenes as possible.
